Inspired by a visit to Bridal Veils Falls and then some YouTube videos, we decided to join the Columbia River Highway at Exit 17 of the I84 and stop off at some of the viewing points, before coming off again at Bridal View, having tried, unsuccessfully, to park at Multnomah Falls.
Described en route as the 'Historic' Columbia River Highway, this was constructed at the beginning of the 20th Century to give access to the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge to drivers of the day, so the roads are sweeping and ascents and descents gentle; although other reviewers are correct in saying that the road is, at times, quite narrow for modern vehicles, particularly the iron bridges, which really require drivers to go across from one direction at a time.
If you have the time, it is a much more leisurely and relaxed route to take, up through wooded vales and passing river views and small communities.
Viewpoints are well signposted and are well worth stopping at for photo opportunities and to take in the scenery, some of them are high enough to really give you a bird's eye view of the river and you can see for miles.
At times, of course, one is merely driving parallel to the Interstate Highway and the Amtrak line but, when you turn off onto quieter roads, it is lovely.

Loved the drive. Amazing views of the gorge, river, waterfalls, etc. I couldn't stop rubbernecking. Would definitely do it again.

Visiting my sister and we took all day to drive the trail, stop at EVERY parking lot and scenic view. We did some walking, some sight seeing, and all around had a great day!! Will do it again when I come back

It was a mistake in driving this stretch. We recommend everyone to come here to cycle. It is not good for driving these roads.

It is an narrow, winding, two lane historic highway. Scenic views, but very congested. Take your patience and test your brakes. Be aware as there are lots of bicyclists on a road barely big enough for cars to pass. For us, it was a one-time drive.

The Columbia River Highway is beautiful and scenic. We were there the beginning of Oct. Traffic wasn't too bad except around Multnomah Falls. We had to circle back around and park in the lot on the other side of Interstate 84 to visit. We were surprised at how close many waterfalls are to each other, and how close they were to the Columbia River Highway. The falls were breathtaking! Highly recommend taking the scenic highway 30.

We rode our bicycles on two different sections of the Historic Highway. From Troutdale to Vista House, and on a different day from Hood River to The Dalles. Great bike trails and a great highway to ride along with fabulous views

The drive through the historic Columbia Gorge Highway it's one of the most scenic drives you can do in the Pacific Northwest. The twists and turns will keep you on your toes while driving, take it slow and easy there's no need to rush, more you hurry the less little things you'll get to see. Plenty of waterfalls, hiking trails, Lush Northwest scenery and of course the river. If you have the time and you're not in a hurry drivers many sections of the historic Highway as you can.

Trying to plan where to eat lunch on the drive from Portland to Multnomah Falls. Some to-go food for a picnic would be nice. Any recommendations? GF and vegetarians in the group = P Thanks!

Buying food in Portland before you get into the Gorge would be a good idea as there are not that many places on the scenic highway.
I would not recommend the Tippy canoe, but check it out for yourself, overpriced and not that good of food. The General store is more reasonable and fun to visit.
If your looking to pack a picnic and you have food considerations
I would recommend stopping at a "Whole foods" or New "Seasons"
