Visited several of the covered bridges in the area: Claycomb Covered Bridge, Colvin Covere Bride and Trostletown Bridge. All bridges had geocaches hidden nearby, so a bridge and a cache is double the fun for us. Good parking at all the bridges, we were able to wander at our leisure and take pictures. We don't have covered bridges at home, so we definitely enjoyed seeing them.

We drove to three bridges. The Herline, Turner's, and Colvin. They are fairly close to one another. The Turner's is down a narrow road with potholes and is at a dead end. My favorite was the Colvin Covered Bridge. It was so peaceful there, and there was a place to park off the road, unlike the others.

Our B&B overlooked this charming covered bridge over Shawnee Creek. Colvin Covered Bridge crosses over Shawnee Creek just before its dammed to create Shanwee Lake in the heart of the Shawnee State Park, just about a mile from Route 30 and the community of Schellsburg. Constructed around 1880, the Colvin Covered Bridge is one of Bedford County's oldest remaining covered bridges. The original builder was J. H. Thompson. This bridge is one of only two multiple king post covered bridges in the county. The bridge is 66 feet long. This is one of the very few bridges in Bedford county that utilizes the red barn paint as its primary color - most other bridges are painted white with a red trim. Since it has been refurbished, it‘s a very beautiful bridge to see and photograph. Can you imagine the stories it could tell?

There are multiple printed guides available for the driving tour at the visitor center in town. Directions were very accurate and easy to follow. The bridges are beautiful, but after the fifth or sixth one, you realize that most were built about the same time and using similar plans.

We planned a day-trip to see all 14 covered bridges in Bedford County, PA. One of my favorites was Bowser Covered Bridge. Built in 1890, it is 90 feet over Bob's Creek. Traffic now uses the steel and concrete bridge non the road next to it.

We traveled about 2/3 of the bridge tour and then returned to the Flight 93 Memorial. We enjoyed the scenic drive. All bridges had some type of parking nearby so that we could get out and take pictures. We enjoyed it.
We used the 'turn-by-turn directions in the Bedford County book, but also added the gps coordinates, so between the two, we were able to locate each one.

We spent a beautiful sunny Saturday driving the loop to see 9 of the 14 bridges. We included lunch at Jean Bonnet Tavern, the Mount Ararat scenic overlook and a quick stop to Koontz Coffee Pot... total of 6 hours. There is a bathroom located by Shawnee Lake if you need to stop (just an FYI). Use the GPS coordinates on the covered bridges map you can request by calling 800-765-3331 or stop at visitors center to pick up. The bridges are not all marked on the roads you will travel, you need the map and you won’t always have the best cell service in a few spots. We saw bridges 5-13 on the map which is basically a loop. Started at 9 RYOT and continued to 5 Herline, stopped for lunch then finished with 13-10 in that order. So many great pictures and it’s mid October with many weeks left of changing leaves this year. I recommend going soon!!

We like to explore, so when everything else was closed we incorporated this into finding the orchards. The bridges are cool, many you can drive over. Wish they had signs on them though!

These covered bridges were spectacular! It indeed was like a scavenger hunt because most were hard to find. The brochure with an overall map was kind of useless, except for the GPS coordinates! We put the coordinates into our iPhone and walla, we found every site!
The only other suggestion would be to post a sign at each bridge with its historical info, such as date built etc.

The Bedford County website has information. You can also get a printed brochure at the Visitor's Center in Bedford. The Visitor's Center also has a book with information on covered bridges throughout Pennsylvania.

There are two just off the turnpike at the Bedford exit. Claras in the travelodge is american diner kinda food well prepared and there is Eds Steakhouse. Also in downtown Bedford there are places.
