The manager of the museum and her husband gave us a personal talk regarding the coverlet exhibit and what to look for as far as design, owner and weaver. Very interesting.

Enjoyed the many coverlets and displays of the equipment used to make them. The curator was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot talking with him. Having this museum in the historical school is a good use of the building.

Very unique and interesting examples of period craftsmanship, its evolution and the machine ages effect on it. Beautiful examples of coverlets and the tools used in its manufacturing are on display. We now see many of these items in antique stores and stored away in trunks, but don’t understand the pride of place these once held in the home, where they were both a necessity and a form of art. Check it out.

Lovely surprise. Don’t be fooled by the building appearance; it is open. Park on the side and enter through the front door. I thought I would be looking at quilts but was property educated otherwise. If you enjoy textiles, you will enjoy looking at the coverlets, currently from New England. They change the displays in the spring. I was educated on the difference between the geometric designs of the loam versus the Jaquard (?) French method that allowed any design. The coverlets are in superb condition. Not a hugh place so if you like to read about all the designs it will take awhile but if you are just a “looker” it could be fairly swift. At you own pace museum. I was greeted by a lovely gentleman who gave me the quick history lesson.

This museum is a unique collection of woven coverlets. The knowledge of the curator is amazing and he's happy to share his stories and information regarding the making of these historical pieces in this museum. It's in an old school which is an interesting setting. I appreciate the care and research they've done to make this museum authentic and historical regarding this lost art.

Fascinating history of the American coverlet. Take time to listen to Laszlo’s talk. We learned so much from him. Wonderful collection of looms, spinning wheels and coverlets. The artistry of the coverlets on display is superb. Definitely worth the $10 donation. Love that they are preserving the old schoolhouse. Got to see them working on restoring some old looms.

I love all things history, and having just recently purchase my first antique coverlet, I wanted to see this museum. Oh my, what a treat. They were exhibiting the comparison between coverlets and quilts with the same patterns. We spent a long time looking at everything. They even have antique looms that coverlets were made on. My husband weaves so they interested him. I was amazed to learn that they have over 600 coverlets in their collection and one day they will have mine. We enjoyed the museum immensely and highly recommend it to those who enjoy textile antiques.

Thank you, Karen. We look forward to seeing you here again. Our newest exhibition, just installed, features 98 coverlets, with the emphasis on color. Coverlet weavers certainly did not limit themselves to red, white and blue, and this is a great display. Exhibition catalogs (title: STILL COLORFUL AFTER ALL THESE YEARS) are available.

Hard to rank this museum. If you like quilts you will find this museum really interesting. These are not quilts but woven bed covers mostly from the mid 19th century. We found the experience very educational and a piece of history. You can go through the museum in less than 1 hour

We went to Bedford just to go to this museum, because my wife has a coverlet from her great-great-great aunt - 1845. The people at the museum told us all about the person who wove the coverlet, the type it was, and they were even familiar with her family who were prominent in her town back then.
We learned an awful lot about how coverlets were made.
We thought the museum would be small, but it is actually quite large with many coverlets from the first half of the 19th century and looms also.
We're from far away from Bedford, but we are becoming members to support this museum in its work.
Pay them a visit if you are in the area.
