This was my second visit, although the first was more than a decade before. This is a fascinating private museum and they have quite the story to tell and the artifacts to back them up. As our docent said, the family never got rid of anything!
Their family story spans Christopher Columbus, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Pa. military museum, Eyptian mummies and the Paris fashions of the 1800's. Who would have guessed it was in quaint Boalsburg, Pa.

Unbelievable amount of history is at this mansion. It’s nice you can actually get close to the displays. It is a hidden gem so close to State College. The tour guide was wonderful.

What a wonderful tour. Since it was in September, we had a scheduled tour that was just our family. We had the opportunity to ask questions and boy that gal who led the tour was very knowledgable. Would definitly recommend this and would love to go back again.

We stopped here while traveling between Altoona and Lewisburg after reading about the builder on Wikipedia. Our visit was worthwhile even though it was a closed day for the interior museum.
Walking the property, we noted the 2 huge vines climbing out of a side porch and nearly overwhelming the 2+ story mansion, the huge Red Oak in front of the house and several tall walnut trees surrounded the houses, barn, carriage house, and stone cottage.

Thank you so much for stopping by the Boal Estate. We are currently in the process of restoring the historic gardens and creating 8 formals gardens including a butterfly vivarium. Our 48 acres include nearly 3 miles of public hiking trails. During the pandemic, the museum is open for tours by reservation, 7 days a week. Just call ahead to reserve a 2 hr. guided tour at either 10am or 2pm.
The huge vine you observed is a record trumpet vine, while the oak is an approx. 150 yr. old white oak. We have just recently completed the first of 3 planned living roofs. The first, located on the small building to the right of the visitor center, is easily observable from the ground.

We were staying in nearby Bellefonte and had this on our itinerary for a rainy day. This place was amazing! The actual structure of the house was so-so, but the history and genealogy of the family, as well as the possessions of the family make this a must see. We had a very knowledgeable docent that made the things we were looking at come alive. I could've spent hours in the Columbus Chapel alone! Being Catholic, it was special to get a glimpse at how similar and how different worship was centuries ago and on another continent. I wasn't happy it was raining on our vacation, but I'm glad we had the opportunity to tour this museum and chapel. Be aware it was a two-hour tour, it was a fast two hours, but I did not see that detail on the museum's website.

What an amazing little museum! There are so many original artifacts under this roof. The family history and stories shared by the tour guide helped to bring the mansion to life. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Listen, give me credit for at least trying a good pun. We stopped here, not quite knowing what it would be like. I'm here to tell you it was absolutely worth the money. For ten dollars, we had a two-hour tour of the Boal Mansion, which included a fascinating and colorful history of the family and its ultimate connection to Christopher Columbus. Talk about six degrees of separation. Just about everything you'll see in the mansion, the chapel and the room holding Columbus artifacts is original. Some of the wall hangings are duplicates, but that's about it. Items range from the 18th century to B.C. Absolutely awesome, worth every penny, and you'll learn a lot. And no, it's not boring. If you're in the area, this is a must see place.

The people are friendly and knowledgeable. The Columbus exhibits are hidden gems! The chapel is set up the way it was in Spain with rare artifacts and there is a 2nd small outbuilding containing documents written by Columbus on display and climate controlled all of which the guide explained to us.
The mansion on the other hand wasn't what I expected. You visit only a portion of the 1st floor since the rest of the building has been turned into apartments. There are incredible artifacts here and it is amazing how many connections this family had. But, I am afraid these great artifacts will end up being lost to time and decay due to the way they are displayed. They would benefit from getting a curator to label things, better display what is there and properly care for the artifacts before some are lost to dust and mildew.
We combined this visit with a visit to the Military Museum which is just across the road.

Thank you for visiting our incredible museum. It is unique in that unlike most museums, guests are seeing the actual artifacts owned by the Boals and their extended family. Like most large historic mansions, guests only see a portion of the building during the 2 hr. guided tour due to time and access constraints. We are in the process of doubling the museum's exhibits which will include the 2nd floor of the mansion as well as the new transportation building. The exhibits are intentionally displayed so that guests can see the mansion as it existed when the Boals lived there. Every building is conditioned with humidity control. Not sure what you were referencing relative to dust and mildew. All items receive proper curation.
Regarding apartments, the museum, a non-profit 501C3, receives no local, state, or federal funding. The apartments provide for the majority of the museum's funding. The apartments were never part of the Boal lving quarters. Instead these areas were designed as living areas for the servants and farmers who took care of the 10,000 acre estate. Workers were always free men who were paid a living wage and whose families were provided housing as payment for their labor.
The Military Museum is just across the road, because the 4th generation, Col. Boal created a militia on his estate, like his buddy Teddy Roosevelt. After WWI he donated the site to the people of PA to serve as a museum.
