Beautiful castle where you can admire original pieces is quite exceptional, we would have liked to spend more time to linger on certain things.

Lovers of old stones, this castle is one of those that has marked us the most. A mixture of austerity (sober façade, inner courtyard and gardens) and life (rooms decorated and equipped with sometimes amazing objects), the history of which was clearly explained to us by the owner. The fact that this castle is private and inhabited is part of its charm.

On our hike around the Monts d'Aubrac we discovered the Château de la Baume, anchored in a grandiose landscape. This castle bears witness to our history depicted by a passionate and fascinating guide. A welcome that meets our expectations, by the owners, descendants of the Napoleon memorialist. All the boxes are filled to pass and stop at the Château de la Baume.

The Château de la Baume is not a discovery but it can be interesting to revisit a monument many years apart to gauge the memory we had of it.
This memory is generally quite vague, or even non-existent for interiors.
La Baume prints above all for the sensations it gives off: coldness, austerity, rectitude, isolation. We could almost say that this castle is shaped by its environment or that it is the image or likeness of its environment.
It would almost release “a pure moment” which lasts over time. It goes through time without much change as if time had little impact on its solidity or durability.
At La Baume, everything is in the castle. By comparison, the park would be almost insignificant. It is not very big and above all, it is a park of “remains” or “testimony”. It bears witness to the fact that there was a French-style park buried today by the earth, grass with blocks of sculpted granite stone, some of which are now leaning, battered by time.
It also shows that the Baume park, although wild and lightly designed, is not a real English-style park. The Baume park revolves around its small pond surrounded by tall aquatic plants and which you cannot approach: it is a peat bog.
Thus, Aubrac is revealed in La Baume. He is in the little park, in the little lake: it is the water that is going up or the water that is not going to go down. It's peat.
For the visit of the interiors, they are rich in Italian art.
In the main room, the guard room, you will undoubtedly see the most impressive thing: a large stuffed dog at the foot of the fireplace. He is from his time and above all, he has lived a lot with all his scars witnessing his fight against the beast of Gévaudan. It even seems that the final battle took place on the hill opposite.
So here, the art is perhaps not in the decor above all. He is in the legend.
Despite the beauty of the place, the guided tour was overall quite disappointing. It's a shame but it's part of the hazards... of life.

Stopover at Château de la Baume: friendly welcome, quality accommodation
Visit to the castle recommended because it is very surprising, which transports us back to the 18th and 19th centuries with its period furniture, parquet floors and decoration!

The least attractive of the castles we visited. A scaffolding on one of the facades; the park not very well maintained and the chatelaine less smiling than the guide. Prohibition on taking photos. Some interesting pieces and furniture nonetheless.
