CLOSED
2019年1月
Due to situations beyond whomever's control it was not able to be opened as planned. Which is a shame, because you could have seen a more realistic view of how the soldiers moved about as opposed to just being told and having to imagine it for yourself. The closest thing would be the Diorama in Gettysburg. I believe it is on Steinwehr Ave.

Please ignore the answers to the questions, I only answered them because it was required.

The facility is not currently handicap accessible. We found website didn't reflect its status, be sure to call before you go. Hope it reopens soon, it's pretty cool.

This is not currently open, due to changes needed to the building. I look forward to visiting when the exhibit reopens to the public.

Are you open for business?
2017年2月 • 夫妻情侣
We were on our way to Gettysburg to tour the battlefield, and learned the Electric Map had been sold and was no longer at the Cyclorama in Gettysburg. My husband located the maps new location, and we decided to make a side trip on the way to Gettysburg. We had really enjoyed viewing the map previously and were looking forward to seeing it again. We arrived at the 22 Carlisle Street location to find a game arcade and a new DVD business at the address. Nothing to indicate where it may be or should be. We left very disappointed. Doubt we will make another side trip to Hanover to view it.

Great for Civil War buffs; leave the young grand kids home
2016年10月 • 好友
Great for all history buffs, but especially wonderful for Civil War enthusiasts. None of my grand children (ages 2 to 12) would find anything enjoyable about a visit, not glitzy enough and they haven't acquired a taste for the Civil War yet. But, if you are interested in Roadside America at its finest, and want to see how the battle played out by seeing from a birds eye view, then put this on your must do list while visiting Gettysburg. I thought this was an amazing find.
We found The Gettysburg Electric Map (GEM) from a recommendation of a fellow camper at Gettysburg Farm Campground. Located in downtown Hanover, PA, we found 22 Carlisle Street easily, despite flag men and roadwork and road closure. We were told there is a free parking lot near the building, but we were forced to pay at the very nearby meter, $.25/hour, a bargain.
The GEM was formerly a part of the display at the Gettysburg National Park Service Visitor Center. Built in 1963 by Joseph Rosensteel, It was trashed in 2008 when the 'new' Visitor Center opened, found hidden away in deep government storage, bought at auction, moved, all 28,000 pounds of it, and lovingly restored by fans and reopened in its new home on the third floor of an empty bank building. This building is interesting in its own merit. The safe is visible, it looks like it might have been a cocktail lounge at some point. A negative for this writer, the map is on the third floor, attained only by walk up. I took it slowly.
I won't bore you with the physical attributes of the map, that is easy enough to find by Google search. Just know it is approximately 30'x30', contained asbestos that required remediation, was cut into 4 pieces and lifted into the window, cemented back together and seams repainted, then 632 red, white, blue, green and amber lights were rewired to allow operating by computer. I will tell you that Marc Charisse, Civil War historian, GEM restorer, and tour guide, gives one heck of a presentation. He gave a succinct history of the builder, and told how Rosensteel manually flipped the light switches as he gave his 22 minute overview of the battle. Marc has an actual script of the presentation with hand written margin notes showing where to flip light switches.
At the end of his talk, he played the actual Rosensteel audio and light show. Awesome. Seeing this depiction from above gave us a perspective of the land we had not gained from driving the auto tour. Splurge on the $8 fee, knowing it is going to more restoration, but leave the youngest kids home.
Hanover has many restaurants within walking distance, eat locally and help their economy.

You really get a good overview of the battle at Gettysburg. You are able to walk around the map and view it from different angles.

A piece of history from my childhood
2016年6月 • 夫妻情侣
I remember seeing this at the Cyclorama in Gettysburg as a child. It was ashamed what they did to it by cutting it up and almost sending it to the junk pile. I commend its current owner for rescuing this piece of history. The sound and presentation is still that of the early 60s and 70s but it is part of history. Please support this restoration by visiting. It may not be impressive to all but remember its context and the deep explanation of the battle.
