An amazing piece of engineering & a real tribute to the Canal Trust team who maintain it all. Back in the day they had to really, ever-so badly want to take a boat up & down a huge hill, the massive labour force required to cut out and build the holding pens & locks would be unfathomably expensive in today money. Brilliantly obsolete engineering kept in full working order, what a fantastic sight and a privilege to walk.

Expected this to be a flying visited and ended up been her 2 hours. We timed our visit perfectly and the locks where quiet busy both up and down. We watched as canal boots moved threw them, amazing to watch and definitely worth the visit. The view from the bottom is pretty impressive too

A lovely place for a walk and to look at this amazing feat of engineering. We’ve been a few times now in various seasons. If you want to see lots of boat activity, then the summer is obviously better, and as the boats needs to have cleared the flight by mid/late afternoon, a visit in the morning would probably be more interesting. There’s a nice little cafe too. Car parking £3 for all day - seems very reasonable although you’ll probably only stay a couple of hours.

Engineering feast of the 18th century. Very knowledgeable Canal and River Trust volunteers. Towpath is gravel and on gentle slope. Cafe is located near Lock 44.

We had a lovely time here, meeting many boats on the various locks going up and down. Plenty of dogs and a lovely cafe at the top of the hill. Well worth a visit.

Stunning flight of 21 locks. The engineering feat is breathtaking and it was a lot of fun watching barges navigate their way up the locks. Good cafe and car park. Visitor centre and really helpful volunteer staff.

Caen Hill Locks - I took a photo at foot level and the picture of the locks didn't do it justice so fired up the drone and wow what a view. The locks were definitely worth a visit, never seen anything like this before.
We went to the cafe near these locks and it was AWFUL, it was a very cold day outside so expected to walk into a warm cafe, no heating and it was freezing in there, we ordered a extra hot coffee (this didn't happen either) and the tea cake was served in a cardboard bowl (yes bowl shape), wooden knife so trying to butter it was impossible

We were looking for a nice day out locally and thought of the lochs the night before. We didn’t realise you had to pay £3 to park, so we moved on to a nearby farm shop to enjoy food instead.
Probably lovely, can’t review properly yet 🤷🏻♂️😂

What an incredible sight.
We walked up to lock number 28 of 29.
There is a little cafe there so you can get a hot coffee while watching the trials and tribulations of the canal boats.

The locks here was on the wife's wish list as part of our long, long overdue visit to Wiltshire.
Very, very impressed at the extent of human effort, ingenuity present at the start of the 19th century.
A huge big up to the staff and volunteers who keep it going too.

walking about 40 mins, cycling 15 mins, in a boat 4-6 hrs depending on the traffic of other boats

Is there any help doing the flight? I'm on a narrowboat and was fine going down but coming back up up will be a problem as I have been I'll and my 72 year old husband Will not be able to do it on his own. Happy to pay for help.
