The ‘volunteers’ need to remember they are there to help. The station master was so offensive and rude. Literally a Hitler in uniform. Awful experience and we will never ever go again. Such a shame.

We went as a family on the Santa Express, we were 6 adults and 3 children aged 2, 3 and 5. The kids had the best time, the display at Bury station was lovely, all the dressed up staff were great. The entertainment on board got the kids (and grown ups) involved and I was really surprised that Santa took the time to sit at each table and have a chat with the families. The kids loved their presents (board game and an activity book in an ELR bag) and the grown ups enjoyed their goodies (mini Baileys bottle and a tasty mince pie). We had some bad luck with the weather which meant the day we were supposed to travel went a bit pear shaped as the snow and ice caused confusion and delay which was disappointing but can't help the weather! We had to re-book onto another train a few days later, but this was easy enough to do once we figured out who we needed to talk to.
All in all I would recommend it as an enjoyable experience for the kids and adults alike.

Brought my one year old grandson with his mum and dad for the Santa Special and I'm not sure who enjoyed it the most! It was absolutely magical from start to finish. From the moment we walked into the station my grandson was enthralled with the displays and the characters walking around.
On the train was lovely with the brass band and more characters (who were wonderful with the children) wandering through the carriages but, of course, the most exciting part was meeting Father Christmas whose outfit was amazing!
I was really surprised at what good value for money it was - a long train ride with Baileys and mince pies for the adults and a cuddly toy for the child plus sweets and crayons. We will definitely book again for next year.

Overall we were impressed with the Santa Special experience. The highlight for me was the brass band who moved through the train playing Christmas carols in the aisle (there were even printed words to sing along!). Inside Bury Bolton Street station were lots of Christmas displays and decorations, people in costumes and (real!) reindeer on the platform. On the train were elves who interacted with everybody, Santa came along handing out gifts (2 year old got a nice teddy bear, 6 year old got a domino rally toy which from the box looked great but unfortunately once we opened it at home it was very poor quality which was a shame. We saw other people getting Orchard Toys games which I really rate so a pity we didn't get one of those!). After Santa came, we got refreshments (mini bottle of Bailey's with a plastic cup and mince pie for adults, fruit shoot and chocolate coins for the children). We took a flask of tea with us as I was driving and we didn't fancy Bailey's at 9:30 am but as it was a sealed miniature bottle we took them home to enjoy that night! For the return journey, the children got a good activity/colouring book and crayons which kept them amused. After the train journey we went across the road to the transport museum which was included in the train ticket price and was excellent, with buses and trains that you could get inside, a model railway, toy trains and a Christmas treasure hunt. This was our son's favourite part of the day! We got there at 9:00 and left about 12:00. We were lucky to get parked at the small pay & display alongside the station - places there were very limited when we left. I would definitely recommend this Santa experience, although having done it once I think we'll look for a different Christmas day out next year.

We visited the East Lancashire Railway as a large group of 11 (7 adults and 5 children) for the ‘Santa Special’.
We planned to travel on Saturday 17th however due to v.poor weather service was running late or cancelled completely. The railway staff were so compassionate about the situation and did everything to ensure our day was still special.
When arrived we walked through the station concourse which had been transformed into a winter wonderland with animatronic polar bears, rain deer and a magic tree. The entire station roof has Christmas fairy lights which looked fantastic along with Christmas actors which fully engaged the children.
The Santa train was amazing and lovely and warm. All the kids received a drink, chocolate, colouring crayons and an activity book.
Performers were onboard and ensured everyone was happy and joining in the Christmas spirit. Santa spent a decent amount of time with each kid which they all enjoyed. The present was good and they all got a bag which can be used again.
If I had to be super critical, the brass band was short and could have been slightly longer however we would probably be deaf as it was a real band in a small space 🤣🤣🤣
Saying that having a longer time with Santa for the kids was much more important and certainly made the kid's day.
We will be booking again for next year.

Firstly I want to say how shocked I am at the poor reviews. There's a lot of people adding up the cost of the trip for their entire party and saying how expensive it is. Riding a steam train is an experience in itself and I imagine the cost to run and maintain these trains isn't cheap, so I'd say £32 PP for an hour and a half train ride with entertainment and gifts is pretty reasonable.
When we arrived, the grotto through the station was beautifully decorated with lots of characters dotted around to take photos with. We briefly queued to grab our bag of baileys and mince pie and badge for my son then promptly boarded the train.
Shortly after leaving the platform an elf came round with juice and chocolate for the kids and after that an activity booklet. The band made there way down each carriage playing 3 songs in each, my son absolutely loved this and the band were encouraging of the children to sing along. After that an elf came down and did a short interactive story and then santa came down the carriages. We had plenty of time to talk and take photos with santa and the gift was fab (which BTW is £8 from the works).
We thoroughly enjoyed our steam train experience and thank the friendly staff for making it such an enjoyable one. The ride was jam packed with activities and not a moment to twiddle our thumbs. We would love to do this again next year and highly recommend this experience.

Well I really don’t know where to begin!! Absolutely disheartening… we went on the Santa steam train as a family of 9 which included a great grandma, grandparents, parents and children, which was purchased by ourselves (grandparents) as a treat to our grandchildren as my husband has recently been diagnosed with Cancer and we wanted to do something special as a family just before Christmas! £300 we paid for the trip or there about’s.. we arrived at bury to board the train, it was all lit up and characters were dotted about all seemed ok, no one telling anyone where to go to board the train though! we just followed the crowds, we arrived on the platform and all adults were given a white paper bag with a miniature bottle of baileys and a mince pie inside! Children were informed they would get there’s on the train! We walked down to carriage E and boarded! 2 bits of tinsel draped the rails and there was no other festivities around! The carriage was very tired and dismal.. the children sat down and was given a fruit shoot each followed by a bag of chocolate coins.. then very quickly after that was given a colouring pad.. approximately 3 minutes later Santa arrived and asked 2 of the children their names, the elf that accompanied him said “no badges’ we wasn’t given any badges! He asked what age groups they was and handed them a present each! Santa was gone as quick as a flash! The singing lasted for approx 5 minutes and the band performed 3 very short songs! It was all really sad, the poor kids.. when we arrived back we was told to hurry up as the shuttle was leaving and there was not another, my husband as well as having cancer has Copd so was really struggling along with 2 of the children being autistic and trying to rush got so overwhelmed one of the children vomited all over the place.. it was all a shambles and for the amount of money spent was a really sad affair! The best bit was cakes snd hot chocolate that we purchased from the cafe at Heywood station before we boarded the train! Never again will we book the Santa train! Somebody needs to rectify this situation as there must of been a good few disappointed little ones.. the elderly gentleman that handed out the children’s drinks etc was lovely and so pleasant and thanked us all for coming bless him! Sort this mess out East Lancs Railway!

Ordered tickets which were £130 for us 4, when we got there the lights and people were amazing and friendly however they had a 1.5 hour wait which wasn't too bad but too cold to wait around so we had to leave and come back. Once on the train we were having to wait even longer for one family that hadn't boarded because they weren't on time.
There was about 2 minutes if a small band, they were great but it was too short, a lady came down and did a poem with the kids for about 5 minutes and then we met Santa which was about 3 minutes so in this one and a half hour train ride for £130.00 we got about 10 minutes of poor entertainment.
Next year we'll definitely be doing something else especially for that price, we couldn't believe how boring it was, we might as well just got on a normal train. I definitely don't recommend and anyone who does has obviously been paid to make that review lol.
To top this off because we were late coming out we had a ticket on our car, worst Santa experience I've ever had.

Santa train was an utter shambles
Arrived for the 15:20 train, got there and groups of people just stood around, no clear direction of where to go and a massive crowd surrounding the service desk. As stood in this que thinking this must be where you show your tickets a guy comes up calling for the 13:40 train others confused like I was were saying "don't you mean 15:20" to which he replies off hand "oh that's been cancelled" then promptly disappears.
The guy on the customer desk telling all the customers to go away because as it's not his doing the train got cancelled he doesn't care. Getting no where I had to go down to the platform to get an answer on just what was going on. Staff all looking bewildered and not a single one can give me a straight answer on why no one was telling people when they turned up and why no attempt was made to tell people in advance of what was happening!
Turns out they were running very late behind because of the weather, which in itself is reasonable, what isn't is the fact that they were already two hours late why didn't they send the word out? Why once we looked of FB did they only put up a status saying the trains were cancelled 20 mins before the train was due to leave.
I have complained to them in person and in other revenues to have them constantly lie to my face about people out on the station telling everyone what was happening. This is run by volunteers so they think they can just shrug Thier shoulders and go "no my problem" it is your problem when people have paid a lot of good money for an experience for little children that you couldn't be bothered to be organised to tell them it wasn't going to happen.
No apology given and not a single person taking responsibility!

Our trip was 17th December 2022. We paid close on £100 for tickes for the Santa Special at 13:40. Our train eventually departed 1 hour and 40 minutes late. We spent the 1 hour 40 minutes freezing cold on the platform trying to entertain a 6 year old. On board was pretty underwhelming. 3 minutes with Santa, 3 carols and that was that. To add insult to injury the toilets on the train did not work and were disgusting. There was zero official communication only the odd overheard snippet of "frozen points". I would have thought the prospect of cold weather would have been factored in well in advance. Overall it felt like grown men playing with their trainset with little regard to paying customers. I feel very sorry for those with later tickets who had their train cancelled. Im very sorry but it was a shambles.

How often are trains from Heywood Station on sundays

As the man from Haslingden said, you need to go to the website and check the specific Sunday. They have special events and weekends and there are different coloured timetables for different days. No trains from Heywood on green timetable days you can't post links here but search for eastlancsrailway timetables

I’m traveling with kids in Nov, during the cold season. Where should we board the train and alight? How Long does it take? Is the fare for round trip?

If you are arriving Wednesday Thursday or Friday in winter the railway only runs limited mid week services, weekends no problem nor are the Santa Specials etc. Please check the timetable on the railways website.
A full trip Bury-Rawtenstall-Heywood-Bury takes around two and half hours. Bury is the usual start point as there are other facilities at the station including as mentioned the Transport Museum and the 'Trackside' station pub and eatery.
All the stops have something to offer, and you can hop on and off as you wish. As mentioned, Heywood has free parking, but pick your day as trains do not run to Heywood on weekdays.
There is a car park next to the station on Bolton Street and one at the Baths just a few yards down the street, both of which are owned and run bu Bury Council and both incur a charge.

Hi, there are a series of council-owned car parks close to Bury Station. There is a free car park at Heywood and Rawtenstall and limited parking at all other stations.

It depends where you mean from where to where. The railway starts at Heywood, goes onto Bury Bolton Street, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall, with various other stops along the route. I think it does the full route. You could do all or part of this.
How much does it cost for the full return train ride,
Hi Gary , a Full line return ticket is called a Freedom of the Line ticket this allows you to hop on and hop off and all the stops. This is priced at £15.50 for Adults.
Please check before you travel as prices change if there is a special event on.

Can I ask about disability at the station, from remembrance there are many steps into the station ok when my husband was younger. We are coming to the forties weekend but worried as to how he will manage.

There is some access to Bury Bolton street from around the side of platform 3 where the pub is. As far as I am aware Ramsbottom is wheelchair accessible on 1 side, I think both Rawtenstall is accessible on both sides, Heywood is accessible on both sides
