Wednesday 20th July 2022, My husband and I decided to go to Bonython House Gardens on the Bonython Estate.
Boynthon Estate is a 20-acre garden with exceptional colour from April to September. A Walled garden divided into herbaceous summer borders and formal kitchen gardens. There are three lakes in a valley with hot summer plantings of orange, yellow and red as well as ornamental grasses and perennials. There are lots of specimen trees, tree ferns and South African plants.
My husband and I also met the owner of the Boynthon Gardens, a lovely lady called Sue, who was walking round with her head gardener discussing what must be dead-headed, pruned and planted.
My husband and I spent most of the day here as it was such a lovely hot sunny day.
After walking round the gardens, we sat on a bench beside the lake and sunbathed in the hot sun. The gardens were very inspiring and I wrote two poems whilst I was here called ‘They Have Not A Care’ and ‘A Walk With Phillip’.
This was our second visit to these wonderful gardens and the experience was a good as our very first visit some years ago.

Visited here after reading TA reviews and so glad we did. It’s so tranquil. Not commercialised in the slightest. Help yourself to coffee and biscuits and pay when you see a member of staff, who are working amongst the beautiful plants. This is a very lovely place to loose yourself for a couple of hours. £9 entry (again, pay staff when you see them) is definitely value for money. Lots of hidden seating too which is fab. It’s not a manicured garden, there are other places to visit if that’s what you’re after, but a very relaxing space that is well kept with healthy plants and lots of wildlife. In my eyes, a perfect space.

There are many beautiful gardens in Cornwall, but this struck us as quite remarkable, a place of peace and tranquility. It is not the most carefully cultivated or manicured garden, but strikes a fine balance between imaginative use of the landscape, artistic use of shape and colour and allowing nature to have its say. We could have spent all day there, just soaking up the relaxed atmosphere and enjoying being out of the bustle of an over-crowded, over-busy Cornwall in high season. And the home-made cakes were delicious.
A note for Australian visitors. The connection with Bonython, suburb of ACT, is a tenuous one. That is named after Sir John Langdon Bonython, 1848-1939, newspaper proprietor, philanthropist and politician.His family emigrated to Oz in the 1850s and is obviously related to the Bonythons, but had no direct connection with the estate, as far as I can discover.

What an unexpected treat these beautiful gardens are. Hidden away, near the UK’s most southerly point. And advertised in a “Gardens of Cornwall” brochure, they seemed like an obvious choice when staying in Lizard. At £9 per adult, we weren’t sure what to expect; and with instructions, like “pay the gardener” in the walled garden as we walked through from the carpark, it seemed a little bit of a paper and string set-up.
But actually, it was quite the opposite. The gardens have been designed by estate owner Sue Nathan, and as she says in the garden’s pamphlet, she has taken so much joy in creating this amazing outdoor space, that she wanted to share it with the public.
And they are joyous. Sue Nathan has carefully designed a flowing paradise, that shows off every plant in its fully glory; from Gunnera Lake, to the Yew Chapel, every twist and turn, laid out carefully in the well-designed pamphlet delivers a site for sore eyes.
And there’s a real bit of good, old-fashioned personality about the place too. From the gardener who spends her day in the walled garden, meeting and greeting the visitors; talking to them about her enjoyment of her job, to the refreshments in the tea house, with its delicious homemade cakes and teas, coffees and cold drinks, and an honestly box for payment.
Sue clearly loves her gardens, and takes joy in creating visual feasts; her garden, a canvas, the plants her colours.
My only criticism would be that having viewed such an impressive array of plants while meandering round this garden, it would be nice to see a selection of cuttings, seeds and seedling, harvested directly from them; my inner gardener would be falling over herself to part with cash. But instead, the plants for sale in the garden are from the same wholesalers as available in my local nursery, nearly 300 miles away.

As a family we absolutely loved finally visiting Bonython. We've been meaning to visit on our yearly holidays to the Lizard peninsula.
What a wonderful place. It was so peaceful, relaxing and a real tonic for the soul. The gardens are a great representation of all the wonderful plants unique to this corner of Cornwall and its micro climate. The children loved it. You can really get lost here as a break from the world.
Having tea, coffee and cake in the peaceful garden area was fantastic and loved how it is all run, including plant sales with a trusted honesty box. It was so relaxing after our walk to overlook the Gunerra lake with it and your beautiful dogs who came to visit us and say hello - we were missing our dog back at home and they gave us our little fix!
Most of all, we really appreciated there not being any mention or signs regarding Covid, as you see almost everywhere else, so it was a true break from the craziness of the world at the moment. A real escape and the owners are really friendly and welcoming.
We are going to recommend to everyone we know and would say a visit to Bonython is a must!

Visited on a holiday to Cornwall with our two young children. Was a quiet day when we went but we didn’t mind as it felt like we had the garden to ourselves!
Beautiful plants abs great trail around the garden to take it all in. Cute little tea hut with a help yourself honesty box system, same for plants that they sell at great prices!
Lakes are beautifully positioned with lovely streams bubbling in between them and teaming with wildlife. Yew chapel felt very mystical!
Will definitely come back next year and recommend to friends and family.

Bonython offers a lot in a very small area, there is great contrast between the plant life in each of the gardens, and a variety of colourful flowering plants. We were fortunate to almost have the place to ourselves on a beautiful summers day. Definitely a hidden gem for those who enjoy horticulture.

We have been to the far west of Cornwall many times, but had never heard of this garden - we were coming back from the Lizard when we saw signs for it.
It is a very beautiful, tranquil garden with interesting plantings, and is well worth a visit

Entrance to the garden costs £8 for adults. That is quite a lot. Maybe that’s why we had the whole garden to ourselves the afternoon we visited, making it very quiet and all the more enjoyable.
