I was very impressed with the complete Castle walls. Not over priced. Information plaques informing you of the rooms etc.
A lovely hour or two spent there. Not enough to do the whole day there, would advise a little wander round Lostweithal.

Sat nav & small roadside signs can get you close to this remote historical site, but you may need an additional sense of dead reckoning & terrain following plus the luck of one direction traffic flow through the wooded approach (Restormel Road leading from Lostwithiel) to complete the journey. That’s pretty much how my wife & I found the public car park to access the ruins of Restormel Castle (‘Kastel Rostorrmel’ in the Cornish language). Once parked, we passed through the kissing gate and proceeded to the English Heritage shop building to purchase our entry tickets (and we stopped to buy a couple of souvenirs on our way out). From there we passed the public facilities & picnic area on our right, and proceeded up the gentle slope to the Castle ruins where our late medieval Cornish history lesson began.
Your exploration of the ruins should include: a walk around the perimeter to view the Castle wall exteriors & the dry moat, and to enjoy the outlooks to the beautiful Fowey river valley (offering clues why the Castle was built on this particular high ground); entering the Castle’s Inner Ward (‘Diberthva Dhownna’) via the west-south west facing Gatehouse (the ‘Porthva’) to view the remains of the interior construction; wander through openings in the inner walls to see & read about the Castle rooms including the King's Wardrobe, Great Chamber, Inner Hall, Hall (the ‘Hel’), and Kitchen (the ‘Kegin’); and a climb up either of the stairways flanking the Gatehouse to stroll the upper level Wall Walk for a better perspective of the Inner Ward and a look at the remains of the 1st floor St Mary’s Chapel plus impressive surrounding views of the river valley & pasturelands & woodlands & the small town of Lostwithiel. You should be able to manage all those highlights in 60-90 minutes, but on a fair-weather day be sure to included extra time for more exploration & lingering at outlooks & perhaps a pre-packed picnic lunch on the property grounds.
The preservation of Restormel Castle in its current state is a cultural gift to the area residents as well as for visitors to the site. Engage a visitor assistant (if one is on duty) for Castle history and read the very informative educational signs to help you enjoy your self-guided tour – and to learn a little more Cornish.

We didnt know this existed until we hunted for something to do one afternoon.
This did just the trick, hidden away up a very windy narrow road
Amazing views from the castle walls and so nice to be able to access most of it.
Very informative boards dotted around advising what each room probably was and who used it etc
The grounds were well maintained so you could walk around the outside of the moat and there were also benches for sitting and taking in the views across the landscapes
Really nice afternoon

A lovely couple of hours spent on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning in June. Interesting info boards scattered around the ruins site which help picture the once was sprawling castle and it’s history.
Beautiful views from the battlements, and plenty of places around the moat to stop and picnic and take in the views down to Lostwithiel and beyond.
Not enough to occupy a full day I’d say. A couple of hours tops and you’re done, but still, a thoroughly enjoyable history hit in beautiful Cornish surroundings.

Restormel Castle is one of the more interesting castles we have visited in Britain. The circular portion was built in the late 13th C. The high wall is well intact as are portions of the inner rooms. It is a fine example of a medieval shell keep.
The castle is located in a beautiful area, great spot for a picnic.

Through a narrow gate and down at the end of of a twisty track. Not designed for big mobile homes. Perhaps this could be added to the handbook?
Anyway, lovely castle, most unusual design. Recent EH podcast giving a whole load more information.

Restormel Castle is really worth a visit. It's smaller, but there's lots to see, to do and to learn about its history. And it has quite the history!
First real evidence dates back to the 13th Century. But there was probably already a castle here in the 12th or even 11th Century. It functioned as a castle until the 17th Century and then was abandoned. Only in the 20th Century it was discovered again, cleared and cleaned. And since 1984 in English Heritages good hands.
It's sitting on top of a small hill, offering some nice views. Even nowadays.
Members of EH enter for free and even dogs our allowed - our Bulldog enjoyed the visit very much. As did we. Staff was really friendly here and also helpful with some additional information.
There is a small trail leading around the castle. And inside there are lots of really interesting sections. You also can walk on the wall to enjoy the views.
Picnic area and bathrooms are on site as well. Free parking just a few steps away.
A wonderful visit. And there was a surprisingly small number of visitors on that day. Too bad, because this castle is really no to be missed.

We knew nothing about Restormel Castle and expected a small castle of some kind, but as we were in the area we went to see what it was all about. Although highly ruinous, the castle is large and good fun to explore.

We really enjoyed our trip to Restormel Castle, which is in such a beautiful location. The staff member there was friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed a self guided tour using the guide book. I would recommend this if you like ruined castles.

Fantastic English Heritage site. The castle is definitely a hidden gem. Very well kept grounds and the castle itself has survived surprisingly well for it's age. Informative signs in all the right places. Dog friendly, some restrictions for wheelchair users. Definitely worth a visit.
