We didn't know what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves for a rainy cloudy day. We booked the guided tour, our guide was Phil and he was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and allowed us to ask questions. Your starts in the welcome area where you can read and see some related items, the video (seated, about 10 mins long) was interesting, showed the rich history of mining in Cornwall. We then went through to various rooms and you can see up the tunnel/funnel. You then climb up the engine house, right to the top as you hear the guide explain. Was lovely to learn about the owners of this mine and how they genuinely looked after the workers.
Entrance and free parking is via the large morrisons car park.

Booked a tour of mine with family (2 young children) Its small and not underground but a great beam engine. The volunteers are excellent.
Museum is good but really need to fix displays as don' think any of them actually worked much to the chidren's frustration

Booked this as part of our recent holiday to the area. We weren't disappointed, due to covid we had to book on to a tour. Our tour guide Ian was fantastic very enthusiastic and knowlagable giving an in depth and interesting history of the place and a insight into how life down the mines would have been. He made the visit interactive for children bad adults alike with many opportunities to ask questions. Would thouroghly recommend a visit.

We booked a guided tour here on the spur of the moment and were not disappointed. Only one part was open (the larger part by Morrison’s) because apparently the smaller part is too small to enable social distancing, but the guide gave us a lot of history and the huge beam engine was very interesting. We were surprised by how interesting we found it, but it gave a general history of the industry and the area as well as that specific site. In all, we were there over an hour and the guide was happy to answer any questions.

We booked to visit this property on a guided tour since they re-opened after lockdown. It was a really interesting introduction to the local history and the large beam engine was very impressive.

But what really made our visit was the volunteer who showed us around. He was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic which really helped to bring the history of the place to life.

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area

Only spent about an hour here but the history & beam engine was brilliant. This place is a lot to see in an hour. The dark tunnels are spooky & great.

We expected a quick visit, however we were treated to 3 hours of tours and interest. Be aware, this location is across two sites and is well worth giving time to. Talk to your guides, show interest, ask questions and you will be reward with an excellent visit. Go, enjoy.

This NT property is set over 2 sites within an urbanised area – the first building with its own car park is across the road from Morrison’s whist the second complex is accessed from the supermarket’s car park

The first building houses a beam engine that was used to bring up both men and mined material and is set over 3 floors – we had a very helpful guide who took us through the history of the Cornish engine and its role in mining tin

The second property is more extensive and houses a much larger beam engine – your journey starts with a short film on tin mining and its impact on the environmental and social history of this part of Cornwall – then when arriving at the building housing the beam engine there is another well informed guide to give you more information – this beam engine in addition to powering lifting mechanisms for men and material also acted as a pump to take water from away from the mining process – the water was then deposited into a stream that had an outfall in St Ives where it often coloured the water red…..

Not being set within the usual towering and wild backdrop I feel it would be easy to overlook these properties which would be a shame as they have a lot to offer – thank you….
