I can understand why this place is quietly listed as a place to visit. A beautiful walk around the outcrop with caves, markings and artwork with a terrific view across the valley. A special place indeed. Well marked track, some steps, easy to manage.

This was a hit list must so our info was sort from the Barcaldine Forest Discovery Centre first.. WeLl done Kate.
The Yamuna trail was our missing puzzle piece to get to these caves. The caves were awe inspiring. The layers of stone worn away, the ochre colours evident ,the stone/rock waves, the holes, the caves ,the varying strength of rock layers making all sorts of shapes, imaginary thoughts of the time that has passed. The surrounding landscape was stunning too.

We were pleasantly surprised by this walk - it was short but it took us around this sandstone outcrop and the opportunities to capture the beauty of the rock and the caves were endless. There are also the views out over the Pilliga which showed how vast an area it was

A beautiful and rewarding walk to spectacularly coloured and formed sandstone caves.

These sandstone caves are an Aboriginal site for the local Gamilaraay people and you'll be privileged to see grinding grooves and rock art at this sacred place.

The caves are a photographer's dream for capturing awesome shots of the shape and hues of the sandstone.

Take your time for this (suggested 1 hour) walk to the caves. It's magic, ancient and beautiful. We werre lucky and there was no one else around.

It's a pity that this national park closed at 4pm. Not sure if you will be locked out if you come out of the gate after 4. Wouldn't dare to take the risk.

I really enjoyed visiting this.

It isn't signposted as 'Sandstone Caves' from the Newell Highway but it's called the Yaminba Trail. The road is dirt/sand but well graded and largely smooth.

The car park is quite spacious with sufficient room for road coaches to reverse.

The signs claim the walk will take about an hour but I was easily finished in 35 minutes without even walking quickly. All that train and tram commuting does wonders for speed!

The 1.7 kilometre walk was pretty easy, albiet unsuitable for wheelchair users or other disabled persons, as many steps,.

There was one example of inconspicuous Aboriginal rock art. I'd guess that there are others off the trail, a sad reflection of the need to protect these artworks from desecration by irresponsible vandals.

I heard plenty of birds but being well after dawn they stayed in the tree canopies and hence were hard to spot. Butterflies were numerous, and native plants in some cases were flowering. There were two public toilet environmentally friendly setups along the way: both were clean.

Bring Rid or similar insect repellent and a hat, plus sunscreen if in the heat of say a late spring or any time summer's day. I didn't find it necessary to carry water but some may want to do that.

Don't miss this spot.
