This London Chartered bank first opened in premises across the road from this one in 1881, a fire destroyed the building. The bank then purchased the vacant lot, paying a record price of £40 per foot for the 55 foot frontage.
J.P.Markey of Hawthorn, Melbourne built the premises. The architects were Oakden, Addison and Kemp and the cost of the building was over £7000!
Oakden, Addison and Kemp was an architectural firm in Melbourne. While it was short lived, existing from only 1887 to 1892, they designed a number of outstanding projects, and all three members designed many more notable projects in earlier and later partnerships.
The bank closed its doors in 1893, resuming later that year as the London Bank of Australia...which later became the English Scottish and Australian Banking Co. They left Hay in 1942 and the building was taken over by Goldsborough Mort.
It is a commanding building looking at it on the street... quite austere and formal.
