It was nice visiting the site of the Inclined Plane. It is one of the last three operating in the US. The other two are in Pittsburgh. This one is the steepest and the only one that transports vehicles. Currently it is not operational. It is down for renovation work. Work is currently behind schedule and no date for completion has been given. Regretfully the lower and upper entrances as well as gift shops and rest rooms have not been kept open during construction. There is poor signage to the lower parking area for the Incline. At the top there are some signs but parking is very limited. Until the Incline reopens there is a viewing platform and a small visitors center attached to the Asiago Tuscan Italian Restaurant next door to the upper terminus of the Incline.

Interesting piece of history. Informative. Nice views form top. You can actually see through a viewing window the system that runs the trolleys. Cute gift shop. Friendly staff. Priced very reasonably.

Although it is closed for refurbishment until 2023, it is still worth driving to the top of the mountain for the view of Johnstown and the surrounding valley. There is an observation deck for this purpose. The posted cost for riding the incline railway is very reasonable when it is in operation, and would be a fun thing to do.

Even though the incline was closed, we stopped to look since we were going to the adjacent restaurant for dinner. It was constructed as a “lifesaver” after the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, the Incline has more than lived up to its original lifesaving purpose. I read that flood waters again swept through the Conemaugh and Stonycreek Valleys on March 17, 1936 and July 20, 1977. During both floods, the Incline carried men, women, children and vehicles to safety and help. It is one of the longest and steepest hoists in the world and one of the few transportation systems of its kind still in existence and has its place in the Guinness Book of Records as “The steepest vehicular inclined plane in the world.” The incline is closed for refurbishments set to be completed in Spring 2023.
We were thrilled to see a large American flag flying above the incline. The flagpole is 125 feet tall and is on the highest point above the valley. I am sure that this flag can be seen for miles.

The Johnstown incline is amazing to look at and the view from the summit is unbelievable,with amazing views of Johnstown and the mountains. The incline is well worth a visit.

I love the incline plane however it is closed right now. A huge disappointment for me but I look forward to the improvements coming. The views are spectacular.

Enjoyed the Johnstown Incline. Very large car (room for auto) trip to top of mountain. Excellent view of Johnstown and surrounding area. Gift shop and restaurant all at top of mountain. Just have to find available parking on side street at bottom. Seniors ride free!

This is a real gem- built in 1890 and still operating (with some restoration) in the same original form. The view is great. The ride is unique. If you've already visited the Flood Museum, or Flood National Memorial, the view from the top of Yoder Hill offers a good panorama of Johnstown and the valley that was overwhelmed by the flood. Another good reason to take the ride is the reasonable cost, and the knowledge that the Incline Plane is operated as a non-profit by the Cambria County Transit Authority, and the fare will help them keep this gem operating. If you want to go crazy, you can take your car up to the top with you, and drive around the Westmont neighborhood. Or, if you are a mountain biker, take your bike up, and ride down on the mountain biking trail (no beginners please! See "Friends of the Inclined Plane Trails" on Facebook)

As a Johnstown native, we often take the Incline for granted. Kids love riding it and the view from the top is great. Good restaurant at the top and bike trails. Also an ice cream stand at the top.

Yes you can continue your ride from the top.
It just helps peolpe avoid a longer drive around
elevation change.

It is not open year round. Dependent upon the weather the observation deck may be open, else it is open when the vehicle is running.
