one of my favorite state parks, a little out of the way, but worth the drive .
I have been there in the spring and fall, both were beautiful times of the year.
if you want a great spot or you want to take a pet, you will need to make reservation a year in advanced

We visited the park and visitors center before our visit to Fallingwater. The visitor's center was really complete and provides a great history of the area. Based on the history and available things to do, it looks a great place to camp and explore.

Rode the Great Allegheny Passage through the Ohiopyle state park. Gorgeous park, great well-maintained trail, beautiful views. On our return trip after a category 2 tornado hit, we were very impressed by how quickly the park staff were out there clearing the trail, cutting up downed trees, and getting debris off the trail.

Crowded is an understatement. If the had those rope mazes to walk through to see anything would be a 4 plus hour wait. I don’t think I have seen more people crowded shoulder to shoulder in random places ever and I am 60. Unbelievable! Only available parking was for miles alongside the road. Every parking lot was over full!

Some of the most amazing white water rapids in the US. You definitely need to take a trip down the river and try at least a level 3-4 rapid. The level 5 is where the real fun begins though!

Beautiful area with plenty to do!! Hiking, Biking and White Water rafting. We did the White Water rafting with Wilderness Voyagers and had a great time with our guide Scott. Hiked to the Cascade Falls in the Meadow Run are. The beginning of the hike has a natural water slide. Weekends can be very busy but trails are marked very well and the scenery beautiful. Another must see is Cucumber Falls. Hiking down to the river and you can even get down to the falls for some swimming. There’s a beautiful scenic overlook at Tharp Knob picnic area. Views looking down over the town of Ohiopyle. Paddlers Pizza was excellent, not to many choices for restaurants but this place was great. Camping was good. Although sites are very unlevel and some are close together with your neighbor. All in all beautiful area with a little something for everyone.

We went to Ohiopyle State Park for the hiking, not other water activities so this review is about the hiking. First off, the trails are relatively well maintained and marked which makes them pretty easy to follow. While here we did the McCune Trails, Cascades Trail, Ferncliff trail, Great Gorge Trail, Cucumber Falls trail, and Johnathan Run Trail.
The McCune trail was about 4 miles. The overlook was a bit of a disappointment, the trees and vegetation were overgrown and limited the view. A little drive away from the trail head parking is actually a roadside pull off that gives a much better view of the river and valley. It you just want a good overlook skip the hike and just do the pull off.
The Cascades hike was very nice, overall about 2 miles. The Cascades themselves were great, not very tall or extremely wide but the view was very pretty. There was no one else there when we were so it was very serene listening to the water. It was easy to get onto the rocks in the river to get some good views and pictures of them as well.
We also hiked the Ferncliff, Great Gorge, and Cucumber Falls trails all together in two loops. Overall, it was about a 4.8 mile hike. The Ferncliff trail offers some nice views from the other side of Ohiopyle Falls. If you wanted to cut down on the hiking distance you could just take the Ferncliff trail out to the falls and back instead of doing the whole loop. We also hiked across the Ohiopyle High Bridge which offered some great views of the river below. Most the rest of the trail didn't offer many views until we got to Cucumber Falls. It is a tall water fall with stairs leading down to the river. You can walk across the rocks in the river to get some great views or there is a viewing platform about half way down that has nice views also. The kids can also walk behind the falls if they are willing to get a little wet. Again, if you don't want to hike much there is a parking lot, that was pretty full, that is right next to the falls.
If you have kids and are visiting on a hot day you definitely need to stop at the Meadow Run Waterslides. These are just natural sliding areas that the river has carved out in the rock. They are relatively smooth and as long as you brace yourself a bit with your hands and feet while going down you shouldn't have to worry about getting hurt. Most people were only doing the shorter section near the top. You can continue on down but the water does toss you around quite a bit more, probably not best for the real young ones. If you don't want to try the slides there is also plenty of room in the river to get in and cool off, both shallow and deeper water.
The Visitor Centers is also great, gives some history about the falls and the area. They have a lot of water activities here so the parking around the visitor centers tends to fill up quick on the weekend. There are also some nice trails for biking, we did not doing that but saw many people biking on some trails.
The last trail we hiked was Johnathan Falls and a small part of Mitchell trail. We made this an out and back hike instead of a loop, total distance was about 3.7 miles. At about 1.25 miles is the upper Johnathan falls. There is an unofficial trail that leads down to the river to actually get a view of the falls. You can't see if from Johnathon Run trail. About 100 yards on down is another unofficial trail that will lead you down to the river to see the river falling a few feet into a "bowl". Both sections are very pretty and offer some great waterfall views. The second area can be a little bit more tricky to get down to view. Then about a quarter mile further is the Lower Johnathan Falls. There is another unofficial trail that can take you down to see it. However, this one is quite steep and could be difficult for some to navigate. Someone has installed some climbing ropes to the trees to help you get down. Even with those it could still be difficult. However, the view is totally worth the little extra work! Then about 3/10 mile further is Sugar Run falls. Despite the rain in the area while we were visiting there wasn't much water running over this falls. I could see this being very good in the wetter spring season but for us it wasn't much to look at.
Overall, this park has a lot going for it with many different activities for just about anyone. Lots to see and do for both young and old. If you are in the area give it a day to explore, you won't be disappointed!

My family is so lucky to live only about 45 minutes from this beautiful attraction! We like to come each season to see the difference in the falls. This visit was the first time our children accompanied us. They were amazed by the falls and loved the visitors center. Always a fun time!

We didn't spend too much time here (just a couple of days passing through) but the park is beautiful, campground woodsy with great friendly check in rangers, nice clean visitors center, beautiful hikes. Plan to come back for a longer stay.

Two adults visited Ohiopyle State Park for an afternoon in mid-May 2023 and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The Visitor Center has a fantastic location for viewing the (small) Ohiopyle falls and has a very nice exhibit center on its lower level. The rangers at the desk suggested a trail hike on the Ferncliff Peninsula that wouldn’t overtax two seniors. The trail along the river’s edge was a bit much with the rocks and mud but the two interior peninsula trails were both easy and very pretty with lots of wildflowers blooming. It is unfortunate that the rhododendron were not in bloom as they must be spectacular, as must the fall foliage in the entire area. We only had time for a small part of the park but it is certainly worth a visit.

Now that I have camping reservations I see that our site 45 is a shared site. I'm a little worried about this. Will we have our own fire pit? Also we want to kayak - not whitewater, are there places in the area to do so?

You could drive to Connellsville where there's a park under the rt 119 bridge and waters calm as you won't be in the mountains and put a kayak in there in the lower Yough river

What kind of tent camping is there in Ohiopyle? Are there any remote spots? Possible to camp near the river or swimmable water?? Thanks!

We camped in the state park camp ground and it was awful! The regular tent sites are right on top of each other. We got a "walk up" site that is a little more private. But you have to haul your stuff up a steep trail to your site. People were partying, cussing, and blaring music until 12:30 and no one stopped them. Worst camping trip we've ever done. Maybe if you go during the week it would be better and less crowded.

The portion of ohiopyle state in and around the town of ohiopyle is dog friendly
Be advised it’s not uncommon to cross the paths of cats, pheasants and ducks.
The trail to cucumber falls is dog friendly.
Another option is to drive up the street to cucumber falls and avoid the extended trail to see cucumber falls directly.
At cucumber falls itself is very dog friendly

We will be staying at an airbnb at the park for a week in August. Is there anywhere in the area that we can rent a pontoon boat for a the day?

Try one of these marinas; they are just across the Route 40 bridge over Yough Lake. Yough Lake Marina @ 814-395-3423 or Lakeside Marina @ 877-211-8919. They are both about 25 minutes from Ohiopyle. Deep Creek Lake is a little further, it is a 55 minute drive from Ohiopyle. There are several marinas there that rent boats. Word of caution; both lakes get very busy on the weekends so a weekday rental will be far more relaxing. Also, book in advance at either.

My family and I are going there in a couple weeks to raft. Should we pack a lunch or are there places close by to eat? Someone mentioned in a review how there are cute shops in town. Also, why is the easiest way to get there from central PA? I know it's only an hour and a half away but not really sure where to go once we are in the general area.
