Summer Saturday Morning Paddle
2020年7月 • 夫妻情侣
Left early to get there and found we pretty much had the lake to ourselves except one fisherman in a boat. We paddled our two kayaks up the main stem of the lake to explore. We saw all kinds of water lilies at peak bloom white and some pink, yellow coming soon. Saw carnivorous bladderworts, pitcher plants, and sundews. Picked blueberries by kayak along the edge. Breezy showers kept coming through. We ate lunch in the truck, then explored the excellent Bog Trail to see more carnivorous plants and blueberries. The park office had clean restrooms. A very nice park we want to visit again.

Black Moshannon SP is a lovely state park that offers swimming, fishing, canoeing, camping and cabins. There is some hiking available. We always enjoy strolling up along the lake in the evenings and mornings. It is a nice escape in the warmer months.

We enjoy camping there. The facilities are typically very clean and most campsites pretty level. The trees offer lots of shade in the summer. We think the drinking water at the campground is excellent.

There is a campstore and grill within the park next to the campground. We’ve never eaten there, so can’t comment on the food, but the ice cream looks good.

The Very Long Uphill and Downhill Journey

My husband and I were on our way back from Florida in our 25 ft Class A RV. We pull our CRV. We found that the severity of the climb up and down the mountain was not worth it. We would not recommend taking a large RV or trailer up that mountain.

Very calm and serene. This is a great place for family of all ages. There is fishing, boating, camping, hiking trails a bog walk and swimming. Plenty of picnic areas and a log cabin friendly store. Great ice cream and good food. There is plenty of parking throughout the park. If you chose to bring your own camper the camp sites are very nice and well maintained. Very nice area to relax and unwind....

The hiking trails are great. The restrooms in the camp ground are modern and clean. The showers are private. The lake is cold, but very refreshing.

Camping at Black Moshannon

What could of turned into a disaster-est weekend turn into such a pleasant experience thanks to the DCNR staff. As soon as we got to the camp ground and was half set up, we locked the keys in the truck along with the spare keys, cell phones, money all locked in the truck. Within a very short time, the DCNR officer was at our site offering to call anyone, call a garage/locksmith, give us a ride, what ever we needed. We did get it unlocked the next morning and ended up being able to have a very relaxing weekend.
We have always liked this park with the ease of walking, programs every weekend, and well kept grounds, but now we have a new appreciation for Black Moshannon State Park.

Not bad for early season trip

The campsite is on the top of Rattlesnake Hill in the state forest. The way to the top is a winding steep climb, and at times this will challenge your driving skill if you are towing something of size. When you leave you will have a lot of brake dust to wash off of your rims.

We were there before the park was “open“. Concession stand was just getting ready to ramp up as was the watercraft rental area. At the chance to meet some of the workers who were pleasant.

Campsite itself is not on the entrance that contains the park office. We found that out the hard way and had to go way down the road to do a three point turn to head up to where we needed to be.

Campsites are typical PA state park campsites. Pretty tight fit lots of boulders to maneuver around.

There is easy access to the lake featuring a fishing pier and several other areas where you can just walk down and throw in a line. There are several boat and kayak watches that are nicely designed.

PA 504 can be a busy road and it was popular among people with loud pipes on motorcycles when we were there. It is certainly not a total peace and quiet place.

Swimming area looks clean and well groomed.
