Always enjoy the serenity of this trip. The staff are kind and helpful. It is really nice not to have to get on a shuttle to get back to our starting point. Just realize you have to portage twice so kayaks are the lighter option compared to canoes.

I sent an e-mail asking how to make a reservation and, when I heard nothing, I just showed up and found that I had to call in a reservation and due to staffing, they had no one to rent me a kayak.
So should I have called? Yes, Should they have e-mailed me back or provided a walk-up option, I think yes. I was disappointed.

We were extremely disappointed with this trip. We were supposed to kayak in the Canal and portage to the river and then portage back to the starting point. When we arrived at the rental place we were told that we were not allowed on the river. We paid $55 to ride a double kayak in canal. I think if they’re going to not allow you on the river they should Inform you prior to your arrival so you can reschedule and or they should reduce the rental rate.
Our kayak was broken (the pedals for your feet) the lifejackets were filthy and moldy, and I didn’t see any evidence of any cleaning procedures of anything.
On the bright side the employees who worked there did their best under the circumstances. We also saw some lovely ducks and plenty of turtles.

We love this kayak trip. I can't rate the rental place as we've never used it but bring our own. Parking free. Easy to put kayak in. Yes, there are two portages so if you don't like it, trip isn't for you. We like it because we can put in/out at the same place and not worry about shuttling kayaks.

The facility is OK with nice canoes & kayaks.
The check-in was fine as well although it could have been more thorough.
The first stream was not that clean but once we entered the Schuylkill river side the views were beautiful.
No issue with the equipment.
The one issue that I see is when we switch twice from one side to the other, the dragging of the kayak can be quite tiresome.
All in all we had a good time.

I had called Thursday afternoon early October to reserve a kayak the following Friday morning for my day off of work. I talked with a gentleman who easily answered my questions and ensured they would see me at 10:30 AM.
Well I showed up early and began looking for anyone to start my rental process. No one was at the rental shack, so I called the number indicated. No one answered. I called the same number I called the day before, no one answered. I looked all around, no one to be found. I waited until after 11 AM, nothing.
So I spent time traveling to someplace for a trip I never got to take.

Have lived in Phoenixville 16 years and this was the first time we did this fun activity. We went on July 4th weekend so it was busy. All of the water crafts were rented, so we had to come back later in the day, but they were nice enough to reserve 2 kayaks for us (me and my husband and a 9 and 11 year old). We did the full loop of the canal and river as recommended. Overall, was a very enjoyable experience. The toughest part of the journey was carrying the double kayaks out of the canal, across the gravel parking lot and into the river. Once we went down the river, had to do the same to get the kayaks back in the canal. My husband and I are in great shape and this proved to be very challenging. Would be great if they offered some assistance. But other than that, the trip on the canal and river was a great way to spend a great summer day!

I brought my own kayak but my friend rented one at a reasonable rate. Parking is free and the staff was friendly and helpful. There are several routes along the canal and river, very peaceful and interesting. Several portages but not difficult (maybe with children it would be a challenge). I plan on going back again next weekend.

This is our new favorite place to kayak or canoe. We rented kayaks and had the most wonderful, fun, yet peaceful time on the canal and river. It is very low key. Parking is free right on site, no need to take a shuttle anywhere as you come and go at the same point, and they hold onto your car keys in a very safe manner. We had no worries heading out. While kayaking, we spotted a great blue heron, a hawk, jumping fish, turtles and lots of ducks and geese. We chose the five mile loop which took about 2.5 hours. There are two points where the kayaks need to come out of the water, take them a short walk and put back in the water. The staff is very friendly and really just lets you enjoy the experience. Highly recommend!

This was a beautiful paddle on a relaxed canal that you physically take in and out your kayaks to cross into the river. The river had islands and beautiful scenery. Lots of turtles!
