Beautiful grounds filled with history, art and architecture!
2021年2月
Wonderful historical cemetery featuring the final resting place of such notables as Stephen Foster, J.B. Ford, Lillian Russell, Josh Gibson, Harry Thaw, Stanley Turrentine, plus many political, military, and business figures. Love the historical entrances with their towers. The art and architecture throughout the cemetery are beautiful. Enjoy the rolling hills and scenic views within the grounds. Be sure to check the cemetery's website for the Resources tab under which you can find brochures for self-guided tours of the cemetery and more information about some notables.

Sprawling cemetery in Pittsburg
2020年10月
This was an incredible cemetery for which to visit. Upon entry you can park and go to the information window and find out where a variety of notable burials are. The peaceful walk among the tombstone art is so tranquil. This is free and educational.

This one's up there...

...as far as cemeteries go. I've been meaning to come here for a while now; it was sort of a last minute decision that I did. I was actually going back to Washington Cemetery - already been there twice - but thought a trip into Pittsburgh would be different. I really like going to cemeteries: I get good exercise walking around, and reading the often random things the dead write on their tombstones is pretty interesting. Best of all these people ain't breathing on me. You know I didn't walk around this time; I drove the car and stopped at some of the graves and tombs that I thought were interesting. It was raining on and off so that gave me an excuse to be lazy. Hey, all kinds of different people here. I was actually trying to find Stephen Foster's grave but never did - you know "Swanee River," "Oh! Susanna," etc. Couldn't find Section 21 where it's suppose to be. Did find a couple Civil War generals and other veterans which I always keep an eye out for. I guess the most interesting one was this mass grave for 45 people that got blown-up in an explosion at an armory during the Civil War. It was a new memorial so someone is keen on keeping their memory alive. I found this one tomb that was all decked out with a couple sphinxes, classic columns, and some raised (relief? contoured?) Egyptians on the door which was made from some kind of brass-like metal. Ain't all this Egyptian stuff some kind of Freemasonry thing? Whatever, whoever's in there spent some bucks being eternal I guess. I contrast with my dad who just wanted his ashes tossed in the ocean. Anyway, I saw those Masonic Square and Compass symbols on a whole lot of graves here. I never quite understood who these people are and what they do. I was thinking it was world domination control thing but really not sure. They do seem to be inclusive of all kinds of people which is a good thing. I just read Hitler wasn't keen on them and exterminated some in the concentration camps. Kindred spirits I guess.

A place to be calm

Probably the largest cemetery in Pittsburgh, this one is huge, with a lot of place to walk, relax, and look through all the history. It's a little hard to get into because the crazy roads in Lawrenceville, but otherwise it's great.

I dont think I would have ever thought of reviewing a cemetery...but this one is notable. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and am sure to take people who are interested to have a look. It is a remarkable place to see. The architecture and natural beauty are top notch. Many old mausoleums and obelisks as well as intricate tombstones. A few famous people, but many of those less famous have the more remarkable monuments. The Winter Egyptian mausoleum as well as the jaws tombstone are worth the trip. You will also likely see deer and ma y other forms of wildlife. Many joggers, cyclists and families also frequent this uniquely beautiful historic place.

Beautiful old cemetery

Went to this cemetery to see where a lot of prominent people from the Pittsburgh area are buried. The cemetery is very peaceful and seen many people strolling among the grounds. They have beautiful tombstones and monuments. A variety of animals can be seen, including deer, roaming through the graves. Alexander King, the owner of “Baywood” mansion, is buried here. Stephen Foster, songwriter, is here too. William Croghan, the owner of the mansion Pic-Nic, is near section two.

I am a huge fan of historic cemeteries and Allegheny Cemetery did not disappoint. The rolling hills, fountain, pond, and beautiful grave markers provided for a peaceful and contemplative moment in the day.

Partially through my visit, near the war memorial dedicated in 1937, I realized there was an app for the phone. I saw other visitors using the app and looked for it myself. There are pre-designed tours and all times are given as walking distance. The GPS takes users on turn-by-turn navigation. I was able to visit the Melon plots, Stephen Foster, and Harry K. Thaw. There are many other notable Pittsburgh citizens interred at the cemetery and I plan to explore more of their histories through the app's tours during future visits. I wish more of the historic, rural cemeteries in the United States had apps such as this.

A very very dear friend is interred in this cemetery. I go there to pay honor to him. The surroundings is peaceful. It allows for quiet reflection. At night, there must be deers that feed on the flowers!

We went to pay our respects to someone who had passed several years ago and was interred in the mausoleum. This is truly a beautiful space, peaceful and well-kept.
