Amazing location right next to ligonier. Great Taxidermy and anatomical models in the museum, with three trails between .7 miles and 3 miles. 5/5

Was looking at Powdermill to visit while in the area, on the website they had listed that they were having a bird banding event at the Avian Research Center at the reserve. Went to the bird banding event and it was great! Loved hearing how they catch, examine and band the birds. Highly recommend this event when they offer it again if you are a bird nerd like me. After the banding event went over to the visitors center, there are some interesting displays in side the building. We did not do the nature trail due to three busses of school children arriving. lol

Powder mill is not far from Linn run and Forbes state park. Inside was closed . You can walk around but I wouldn't spend more than 30 minutes with Linn Run and Forbes nearby and scenic Mountains to walk. Overall it's just a rustic nature preserve for people who like nature.

The Powdermill Nature Reserve (at least the main building, as we've experienced it) is a great place for about an hour-long visit for nature lovers, conservationists, etc.
(It's probably not the best spot for folks to *need to be entertained*.)
The hosts are friendly and greet you, then let you "do your thing" once in the building..."Let me know if you need anything - enjoy the facility".
The taxidermied animal exhibits/habitats, living stream/fish, snake(s), bog water-cycling demonstration, and hands-on fossils/pelts/bones have always been a hit with our kids.
Hoping to walk the on-site trails one day soon.
A very neat, Leed-certified facility for those with an interest in environmental education and such.

Have been talking about visiting here for years & finally made it. Very interesting & informative displays inside. Various trails to use & they are well marked. Helpful staff too!

This place is a great place to go to when the weather is inclement. The displays are nice. There is a plant room that is a must see as it involves the restrooms!

We stopped in too early to go inside the building, but hiked the half-mile loop along the creek. The path is clearly marked, and informational markers along the way added to our experience. As members of Phipps Conservatory, we had heard of Powdermill, so stopped by when we saw the sign on a drive through Ohiopyle. We'll come back sometime in the summer, during regular hours.

I went to Powder Mill on a mild winter day, a balmy 60 degrees. Took the black birch trail which takes you into the woods to a steam then circles back to the starting point. I did not take pictures which is fine as I was happy just to concentrate on the beauty around me.
After our walk we toured the nature museum.
I will definitely return in the spring then summer and fall to enjoy all the woods have to offer.

My family and I have been visiting this nature reserve once a year for the last four years. We made the trip out today so my kids (7 and 4) could make seed bombs for the garden. The girl who ran the"class" was so friendly and did a great job explaining everything that was being done. My daughter was so excited about this activity and she was not disappointed.
After they were done making seed bombs, we walked around the reserve, looking at the fish, the animals, the Marsh and my kids loved the microscope. We also took a small walk along one of the trails before heading home.
I definitely recommend checking out this nature reserve.

The museum is full of interesting information on animals, snakes and wildlife in this area. A great place to take kids for learning about nature. Great walks from little hikes for kids and elderly to a longer hike up to the ridge. Great birding area.
