This is a great park. Lots of trails, great campground with recycling and great fire pits. Way too many people on the Hawk Falls trail though, so don't expect a peaceful hike. Everyone was respectful - it's just heavily used.

Did about 4 miles on the trails. They were all save and level trails. The fall colors were great and we had some nice weather. Well worth the visit.

This is a beautiful park with a variety of trails. Gorgeous waterfalls, views of the mountains, a calm lake, and a field of boulders are features I love. Visiting on a Monday in late September, I was able to sun on the beach with just a few others around. Peaceful & restorative!

Customer service is frankly non-existant. The ladies at the registration desk are cold. I was greeted with a stern look and "site number?". I gave the number and she replied, "Were you suppose to be here yesterday?". I answered, "No, today". There was then a litaney of regulations. It was just so unwelcoming. The park ranger chastised us on parking with no effort to understand or help. We will not visit this park again. Something is very wrong here. They don't seem to want campers.

Hickory Run State Park has interesting history. It also has many scenic hiking trails, camping, picnicking, fishing and swimming. The visitor Center has a room with interactive exhibits that explain different parts of the park such as Boulder Field. It also has the history of the flood of 1849. You can listen to a recording of Joanna Gould’s account of the flood.
As for some of the park history Brothers Stephen and Isaac Gould were some of the men who bought land and began operating lumber mills. All the logging lead to floods. A few dams broke October 30th, 1849, that lead to flooding in Hickory Run. There is a cemetery located near the visitor center where the seven victims of the flood as well as other people are buried. Isaac’s daughter was one of the flood victims buried there.

We had a limited amount of time to spend in this wonderful state park that I had heard so much about from friends who have been there. In this post I'm hoping to point out some of things I wish had been pointed out to me.

We got to do 3 hikes here:
Hawk Falls
Boulder Field
Shades of Death

It seemed hard to figure out how to find these hikes. Couldn't get good information from the Hickory Run website. Nor could I find anything on parking.
We accessed the main park road, 534, coming from Lake Harmony and the Boulder Lake community that we were staying in. Once on 534 we saw cars parked in small clusters at various trail heads. Luckily it was during the week and we were able to get a spot. The first trail head we came to was Hawk Falls. Coming from Lake Harmony we were heading west on 534 so it was on our left. The trail head is literally on the 534.
This trail was lovely and not all that difficult to do with younger and older family members . There are some tree roots to negotiate and a few rocky areas but for the most part it was very manageable and very pretty. Lots of water features along the way, great canopy cover and a really nice little waterfall as the pay off at the top of the trail. Not a super long hike and there are some tougher trails that branch off from it. We didn't get to do any of those. For us it was an out and back.

Next we attempted Boulder Field Trail which is on the opposite side of 534, same parking spot. We had gone a very short distance when someone along the trail told me that it would be a 6 mile hike one way and that it was very, very muddy. I don't know if it really is 6 miles going this way because when I heard that we turned around as we were not looking for a 12 mile hike or even an 8 mile hike with a 3 year old in tow. I had read that there are a number of ways to access Boulder Field so we got in the car and continued driving west along 534.
What you need to know about getting to Boulder Field going this way is that it is a long slow drive. The road becomes a dirt road, there are a lot of bumps and it takes forever to reach the boulder area. There are some signs along the way and once you pass the visitor's center you just follow these signs.
One nice thing about doing this was that we found the visitor's center which also seems a little tough to find if you don't know what you are looking for.

Boulder Field is worth a visit because it really is a sight to see. There were many people out climbing on the boulders and I have to say I'm surprised that's even allowed because it appears very dangerous. We saw quite a few missteps with people getting scraped and bruised. Not to mention twisted ankles. No park official is out there monitoring what is happening and if someone were to get seriously hurt I don't know how easy it would be to get help. I would say go to look at but not to hike on.

We returned on a different day to do the Shades of Death hike. I had read that it could be accessed from the visitor's center and now that I knew where that was it seemed like a good idea to park there and hike it.

Shades of Death is a very, very challenging hike. It is not for the inexperienced or beginning hiker, it is not for someone in flip flops or casual foot ware. There are several steep, narrow sections. It is well marked which is good because the trail map I picked up at the visitor's center was completely worthless. We had a 3 year old with us so we did not complete this hike to the waterfall, only got about a mile in, but I have friends who started it at that end as opposed to the visitor's center trail head and they said it was quite difficult there too. There are beautiful spots along this hike and I would have loved to finish it. Another time!

Finally a note on that visitor's center. It's apparently pretty new and very under utilized. I think the park does not do a good job promoting it and as others have mentioned the people staffing it are not that helpful. It's a work in progress I guess.

Hope this info helps!

The campground was very crowded with sites right up against each other, no barrier or privacy. The bathroom facilities are inadequate for the huge number of campsites. 3 toilets for hundreds of campers? And the bathrooms are filthy. The staff at the visitor center are not customer service oriented.. they were standing around chatting and eating while campers waited to check in.. We have stayed all over PA and this campground was a huge disappointment.

Scenic trails, great visitors center, lovely waterfalls EXCEPT for how many visitors ignore the ‘stay on the trail, no swimming/wading’ signs. The view of the falls was blocked by rude tourists; smoking, drinking beer, climbing the rocks and wading in the falls. The Boulder field was also crowded for a Monday, and this is very difficult terrain to manage.

I liked the pleasant lake and the beach in state park. Lake sand Beach within Park is flat and had small trails next to it so good for small kids
