went on tour a couple weeks ago. there was no tour bus it was a Chevy suburban SUV cause the guide(Godfrey), said his bus had been vandalized. at each destination we did not get out of car to take pics or get a good look at what he was describing all he did was drive from block to block pointing out things. he shouted inappropriate things at white people passing walking by, i was embarrased cause all the windows were down in SUV and it made us the customers look like we were apart of his hatred for white people, and just down right ignorant. if you want a detailed slave, and black culture tour do not waste your time or money. $100 for nothing that i can't get back. shoulda spent it on dinner. very disappointing! BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!

I hope this is the right place. I went on the Gullah at night tour with Godfrey…rather I started the tour and just couldn’t. I went to learn about the culture and all it got was a whole lot of black Isrealite nonsense. I was confused as to why the tour started out with a discourse about African people being here long before the natives and something about Egypt. (Yes Egypt is in Africa but most of our ancestors were kidnapped from west Africa, but I digress). The kicker was when he stated, “there are two types of black people in Charleston, tourist or homeless people”. Absolutely ridiculous and insulting to the people of African descent who live here. To the people of African descent who I have learned (not on this tour) have been integral not only to the founding and development of Charleston but this region, SC & our entire nation! At this point I turned to my friends and said I can’t do this. I get different interpretations of history but this dude spit like 20 lies in 10 minutes.

If you want to be confused, if you do not want to learn any facts of Gullah, if you want to enter into an unreality world of history, if you want to spend $50 to see carriage blocks and be told its slave blocks. Take this tour. We took his tour 11 hours ago and we are still trying to figure what we experienced. We did not feel safe and we are grateful it was only an hour and not two hours like some other people commented. We learned more from reading Google and plaques. BEWARE! BEWARE!

This was the most eye opening, educational, energetic, self awareness, unexpected, tour that we have ever joined! Godfrey explained the hidden details of Charleston's dark history! For Black America, this tour is a must! We will be back with our family and friends! We thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend!

This was a very eye opening tour from a passionate tour guide .Godfrey did a great job presenting the Gullah side of Charleston's history. My daughter and I left with a better understanding of downtown Charleston's slave history.

We had an amazing experience on the Gullah tour in Charleston SC. We were celebrating my mother’s 90th birthday so our group included all adults with the oldest being 90. The guide Geoffrey was knowledgeable and simply amazing. We learned the true stories behind the reality of Charleston. It was an unforgettable experience that I would highly recommend. We learned historical facts about the reality of the slave trade, symbolism of common sights and the origins of words used in Charleston.

Godfrey dropped some knowledge about slave auctions in Charleston but did not tie it back to the Gullah people post slavery or current day. The tour was suppose to focus on the Gullah people and culture but it did not deliver. His focus was on religious text and conspiracy theories, some that did not tie back to South Carolina. He spoke in hyperboles and not facts. Also, we were unable to see most of the things he was pointing out.

Not if you take the tour with Godfrey. His tour barely mentions Gullah.

Is there a tour near Charleston where we can view & experience a Gullah Community. We took the bus tour which we thoroughly enjoyed & plan on doing this again but would like to see their lifestyle. We would be willing to travel from Charleston but would prefer it to be a day trip.
