We love going to Mercer House Winery. It is definitely not your typical winery. All of the wines are unique and they change frequently. We just tried their 2 new flavors, Strawberry Pom moscato, and Cherry pie. Yum! They have wines for every palate. They have dry wines and very sweet wines. They also have some muscadine wines that don't taste like muscadine. Especially their barrel aged Vinum wine. The workers are friendly and very laid back. You may not like every wine, but you will find some that you'll love. I love how adventurous they are with their wine making. I know I can go back a few months later and find some new flavors to try. This is a must go if you are anywhere near the area.

My parents were in the area for a visit and mentioned they wanted to check out a vineyard. I wasn't aware there was a vineyard, and not being a wine drinker I was hesitant. Sure enough just a few mere miles away there was a vineyard to check off the list of things to do in the area.
I wasn't sure what to expect going into it but I and my family were pleasantly surprised. There was an expansive range of different wines, all that are most likely not for the wine enthusiast. Shannon, the one man band, will let you know that the wines are a different creature. They all had a range of smells and flavors and some might not suit your taste while others will hit the spot.
After the tasting, we had all agreed on our favorites and each walked away with some bottles that are poured, bottled and labelled to order. Now we have a spot to bring other friends and family when they come to visit. So, if you consider yourself a wine enthusiast that likes the norm or prefers something dry then perhaps this is not your spot. But if you like to try something new then give it a shot.

This is the first "winery" that I honestly thought every single wine was terrible. It's not uncommon for a type of wine not to be to ones particular liking. I tend to be a pinot grigio or Riesling person. In my opinion all the wines tasted like vinegar. The wines are not filtered, therefore beware you'll find particulates floating in your glass. In my opinion, wine should smell good, be visually clear (with good legs), and be palatable. This was not the place to find it.

This is certainly an ironically interesting and fun "review"... It's also the first time ever hearing someone say they didn't care for a single style, (especially considering the vast range; 20 in all).
Apparently you were expecting something 'traditional' in a region where only a single variety of grapes can be grown. With such limited options for varietal growth, it's my creative option to offer wines that have never been available; Key Lime, Apple Pie, Raspberry Cheesecake, Bloody Mary, and many more. Equally interesting, three of the wines offered were produced in 2001 by a leading (now deceased) producer which have received Gold Medals.
(This is the point when such aficionados have recognized and relished in our extreme diversity.)
I can't help but wonder if you even bothered to read ANY of our many reviews (on this site as well as several other platforms) and questioned your own uniquely narrow perspective. I find it difficult to put a lot of weight in your review considering so many others have not agreed with your assessment. (Which is unfortunate since I typically respect and consider all reviews (that carry any validity) and would otherwise quickly consider an actual 'problem' on our behalf...) Nevermind that no winery could sustain any number of years in business if your assessment were indeed accurate.
If this 'staff of one' may offer some tidbit advice;
1> Please, consider preparing for your winery visits prior to venturing out and exploring. Had you put any time in such endeavors, you would have quickly discovered my unique approach to the 'art' of wine production and could have saved yourself any potential discomfort.
2> Consider taking the effort to express yourself in person while actually visiting a winery. It 'may' have come off as more sincere to have heard your opinion face-to-face versus finding you ("L S") hiding behind a keyboard to express your less than open-minded perspective. (And who knows, I probably would have waived the tasting fee(s), assuming you sampled more than one...).
3> Try to avoid retarding your valuations by also mentioning your limited preferences.
4> Perhaps you have never heard the sage expression; "Praise in Public - Punish in Private".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: I can assure any other interested parties that the word 'vinegar' is often misused when someone doesn't understand the vast range of flavor profiles consistent with artisan wine production and often lack the ability to use proper descriptors consistent within the industry. (We do offer the 'Universal Wine Descriptors' posted on the wall which could have offered a more accurate application~)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like, however, to offer my thanks for allowing me this opportunity to respond to an 'opinion'.
This is one of the few opportunities I've had to respectfully apply my own perspective and counter-point.
You have, ironically, provided me with a great service~!
Perhaps you should bridal yourself to more 'traditional' wineries where the same styles are incessantly repeated, (which is virtually all others)... and with that;
God Bless, Safe Travels, & Cheers~!
Shannon - Owner/Producer/Artist
P.S. Imagine if you had considered something like this;
"Considering other reviews, this winery appears to be favored by other wine lovers. It was not, however, to my personal liking. The producer (Mercer House) clearly takes a 'non-traditional' approach to winemaking. Others should expect a unique, perhaps challenging, experience that includes unheard-of flavors and seldom-used (ancient) techniques as well as an impressive penny floor~" ;)

This tiny winery is right on the road and yet is difficult to spot. But the wine tastings offered by the owner make the hunt well worth while. Even if you've had poor experiences with Muscadine wine in the past, you should try these unusual wines. They are truly unusual and the owner-vintner an artist.

Unique is the word of the day here. The proprietors are very cool and laid back their dog Corky visits the cellar from time to time and you get a taste of wines that you never find anywhere else. Shannon and his wife are awesome hosts and the property has a 1 mile walking path around the vineyards. Gotta go if you’re in the area. Well worth the trip.

While on a road trip, my fiancé and I stopped in at this wonderful winery on a whim. The place wasn’t very busy at 4pm on a Wednesday but that just meant that we got a one-on-one experience with the owner/wine-maker/bartender Shannon. He gave us a wonderful explanation of all the wines we tasted and it was definitely a highlight of South Carolina for us! The next time we come, we’ll be doing a tour of all the vineyards as well. Tours should be scheduled in advance, which you can do on the website!
Thank you Shannon for letting us spend the afternoon with you, and we hope to be back soon!

Thank you Mardjeau and for the musical expressions~!
By the way, SC has 16 wonderful wineries and you can find them on Facebook under "SC Wines & Trails".
I look forward to another visit and wish y'all safe and wonderful adventures...

We did a booked tour with Shannon and it was a great experience. Interesting to learn about his 5 vineyards, wine making process and about there wines. We appreciated learning a different side of how to make wine and the passion they have to share with people. The wines they have are unique however there will be one that you like. Need to try the Bloody Mary wine. My suggestion is that anybody in the area of this winery should visit it. A tour with Shannon is fun, educational and you taste the wine along the way,

This was my first real wine tasting at the ripe old age of 61...lol. I was in town just overnight and looking for something to do, checked out trip advisor and thought why not? I enjoyed trying all of the different wines they make. Ended up buying 4 bottles...more expensive than what I normally spend, but I don't think it's more than a typical winery. You get a discount per bottle, so it ends up being pretty reasonable. There is a tour of the facility, but I am not sure of the details of that. Thanks Shannon!

We sure wish we could have more signage from the highway but the County has funny rules for that sort of thing.
While we do offer a wonderful Vine & Wine Tour, our guest are welcome to take advantage of the walking trails every week...and do~
Someday, if we're fortunate, we hope to add a patio feature to our venue. That said, we have benches along our pathway as well as other scenic areas of the property. You simply need to start with exploring the property and vineyards.
Price-wise, we're pretty much in-line with the other wineries in SC. The average price per bottle is $15 with options for refills at discount and volume discounts. We also have some very nice Ancient American wines which are naturally priced for their quality. We discovered why there are only 10 organic and all natural wineries in the US soon after we opened. It's not cheap or easy...
Wineries have three rules-of-thumb; Discovery - Sharing - Exploration
We get rediscovered many times per year as we cannot reproduce our 'field-blend' wines.
Thanks for sharing with us and please reconsider 'rediscovering' our newest vintage releases~
Cheers~!
