I love these kinds of places. Always unique with interesting items and displays you'd never see elsewhere. Saluda is home to two heroes of the Alamo: William Barrett Travis and James Butler Bonham. There is a model of the Alamo in there and lots of other cool stuff about them. They have frequently changing theme exhibits and if you ask nicely they will probably let you have a look at the old theatre next door. Also Bonham's childhood home is owned by the Historical Society and can be toured by appointment. Call ahead for hours as it is all volunteers there. Worth the trip if you are nearby. Saluda is a great little town with old fashioned storefronts. Great location for movies.

I visited the Saluda County Historical Society Museum on August 21, 2017. The day of the epic Eclipse of 2017! Everyone that we met there was absolutely wonderful. I had a complete tour and history of the city and local area. The museum is filled with so much local history. It really is a great little place. You should check it out. They are run by local volunteers who know so much about their history. It's really great! Please visit this museum. Donate to them as well. Every dollar helps and is appreciated.
Built in 1936, the Art Deco Theater next door is currently being renovated. They are working to restore it to as close to original as possible. They are working so very hard to bring this theater back to life. I received a personal tour of the building during my visit. The smell of history when you walk in is so great. I love that smell. It takes you to a place in your mind where you can see back in time when everyone dressed up in their best clothes to see the show. If you stare long enough you can almost see the spirits of people in the past just taking their seats, walking around and just mingling among the elite towns folk as the show begins. Anyway, let the photos take you to a different time and place. You might enjoy the ride.
The Historical Society is renovating this theater and could definitely use your help. Feel free to send any donation to them and help out. They currently use the theater in the condition it is now. Any money they receive is used for renovations. Help them! These are great people in an amazing town

The museum may be small, but the amount of knowledge and artifacts contained inside could fill volumes of books. The museum is run by the Saluda County Historical Society volunteers. The people are knowledgeable about most all of the artifacts contained within the walls. Admission is free. You can donate if you feel the need, but are in no way pressured. It was a very informative visit. Worth checking out!

Members of the Saluda County Historical Society have done a magnificent job restoring this beautiful, historic log house. To walk in this house is to walk through history. To know that James Butler Bonham and his family lived here, to learn about their history and their contributions to both South Carolina and Texas, as well as to the world, is memorable. If you love history, you will love this log house and the people who lived there. A big thanks to the Saluda County Historical Society for saving this log house when it was almost on the ground when they obtained it. Please don't forget to leave a donation for the continued care of the Bonham House and Flat Grove Plantation, only known surviving birthplace of an Alamo hero. Remember the Alamo!!

Saluda county is rich in history in many different ways. The connection to the Alamo through Travis and Bonham is probably the best known one

Took a group of school children and these folks bent over backwards to help. It is a small museum, but worth seeing. They also have several historic properties like the Marsh-Johnson house which has been lovingly restored and the Butler-Bonham house. The theater next door belongs to them and they use it for community functions. Just super nice folks.

The Saluda County Museum, operated by the Saluda County Historical Society, contains a wealth of information about the area. Particularly noteworthy is Saluda's connection to Texas. This is the birthday place of James Butler Bonham and William Barret Travis, both of whom died defending the Alamo. The Society operates Flat Grove, the house in which Bonham was born. There is also a historical marker indicating the birthplace of Travis. As part of the museum is the old Saluda theater, and tours are provided. The people who operate the museum are friendly and the source of a wealth of information. While admission to the museum is free, donations are welcomed.
