$2 to walk around a cemetery. The graves of Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane are not in their original locations, the walkway to view the headstone (not original) is to the side and not where the front of the headstone can be viewed. It is a very awkward viewing area. The cemetery map fails to show the 1st female doctor who was an important citizen especially for women and children of the area. Dr. Stanford is located in the South Potters Field - not even given decent burial consideration. When our 10 year old grandsons asked why she was not listed despite being an important citizen and well loved - there was no response by the employee other than he received that question frequently. We plan to write a letter requesting this person be recognized. This doctor did house calls between Wy and Deadwood - literally worked herself into a heart attack only to be dropped into a potters field and forgotten. Luckily someone was considerate enough to give her a headstone. Be aware of the Deadwood trolley tours that will drive you through the cemetery, others must walk. Nice overlook and some interesting headstones

By viewing the tombstones and grave markers, a visitor can get a real sense of the history and hardship experienced by the early residents of Deadwood. The cemetery also offers a scenic — but steep — hike that’s not to be missed if you are able and willing.

It's a nice stop and a nice walk if the weather is pleasant. Restroom provided at the entrance. Don't try to walk up to the cemetery entrance from town unless you really like going uphill. There's some light uphill walking inside, unless you choose to go see the Seth & Marth Bullock gravesite as we did...I do recommend it for a different view. The Bullock grave is about 1/4 mile outside the main cemetery, all uphill, and the view from there is very good. Having researched it afterwards, I found the Bullock family plot was purchased in this location to get a view. Specifically, Bullock had completed earlier in 1919 a memorial to Teddy Roosevelt on a mountain 5 miles away, and his grave location was placed to have a view of this mountain. He died later in 1919 so you can see the connection. Anyway, it is a steep hike so wear good shoes, but it's worth it.

As historical cemeteries go this is one of the best. It is well laid out, the map/markers of the points of interest are well done and easy to find. There is a fair amount of hill walking so be prepared - but you will be rewarded with an amazing lesson in old west US history.

What an interesting cemetery. You see where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. Also the grave of Samuel Bullock -- wow - that one was quite a hike (much to our teenage granddaughter's dismay on a hot day). But, when we got to the top, we were awarded the opportunity to see big horn sheep, so that helped to lighten the mood. And, the walk down was way easier! The gentleman at the cashier station was very nice and answered our questions as to when the last burial was, when the cemetery was sold out, etc. I asked him if it was "haunted", but he said he hadn't been there at night, so couldn't verify the rumors. Darn it! There is a great overlook of Deadwood as well. There is also plenty of parking and a gift shop, but we didn't stop in there.

The visitor center rep and the hotel clerk both warned us off taking the stairs to the cemetery. Made it sound impossibly strenuous! We did it anyway, and are glad we did.

If you are physically active and don't have health problems, you will find the climb tiring but certainly manageable. Our group included adults in their 60s and 70s, and young adults in their 20s. None of us run marathons or are super athletes but we are not couch potatoes. Yes, the stairs are steep and we stopped at the landings to rest, but if you are a physically active person don't be scared away from a unique and memorable experience, not to say great views and a chance to see local homeowners' gardens and chat with residents. Younger kids would think this a great adventure - and get their wiggles out before a long car drive!

I visited for the first time recently. There is parking outside and it cost $2 each entry. It was really interesting to see the graves of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill, however there was a tour bus in front and literally a crowd around the graves, and other visitors had to wait until the tour had departed. The cemetery has some great views of Deadwood and it is a peaceful spot and interesting to walk around. It is very 'hilly' however there is some seating to have a rest when required.

A cemetery that goes back to the days of the old west. Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane have burial sites here. There was a lot of walking so we could not walk the cemetery as my husband has a walker. The next day we took the Boot Hill Tour that covers the cemetery. If you want to visit the cemetery take the bus tour. The guide provides you with lots of information regarding the cemetery, Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. The bus drives right up to the stairs to get to their sites, so only a few steps to climb.

When we got there, the admission area was closed, but you can just walk through. It was way too hot, and it was too much of a trek. I stayed near the front while he walked back with another couple.

This was my choice of places to visit!!! And I'm glad we went altho unable to walk the hilly paths we did get to see Wild Bill's and Calamity Jane's tombstones. Great gift shop, good map, bathrooms, parking..........just too hilly for some knees and ankles but others were doing just fine.
