President Theodore Roosevelt contributed to the preservation of the Black Hills area. Deadwood Sheriff, Seth Bullock and President Theodore Roosevelt were close friends for many years. 1919 with the passing of his friend, Bullock wanted to create a memorial of his friend’s life and a place where people could view wide open spaces that they both were fond of during their lives. Bullock had Sheep Mountain renamed as Mount Roosevelt and built the Friendship Tower. To get here, you will travel on a winding gravel road for about 1.4 miles. Ample parking by entrance of trail. Free admission. The uneven foot trail is about .5 mile to tower with incline. Beautiful views and information plaques along trail and tower. Near the tower there is a rocky slope view point with another amazing view.

Peaceful and spectacular are the two words that come to mind when one visits here.

The uphill walk is worth it as the view from the tower is awe inspiring.

Take your time and enjoy this.

We greatly enjoyed our stay in the northern Black Hills but there were not many places we could find to hike or drive to enjoy the views. Mt. Roosevelt was one of the few places to do so and what a great place to visit. We came early on the morning we left Deadwood. The temperatures were cool and the air clear making it ideal for our visit. The hike up the mountain was neither too long or steep, rather a perfect mix of enough elevation to reward you for your view but not enough to overexert you.

The mountain was awesome but the tower made it amazing. It looked like a fairy tale as we approached in the morning sun. Once in it the views of the Black Hills from above were stunning. While I enjoyed our hike up the '76 Trail, this was all the reward and beauty without the exertion. I highly recommend you visit when in or around Deadwood.

It could be a little better marked. You do have to drive a gravel road to make the top.

This is a must see while in the Black hills. It is a short although uphill hike to the monument but the views are spectacular. There wasn’t even a breeze so it was amazingly quiet at the top.

The hike to Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower was just what we needed to fill the couple hours before dinner. We hiked up to the overlook first and took some photos of the expansive views. Then we headed back to the tower and climbed the spiral staircase to the tap. Once again the views were amazing! It was a fairly easy one mile hike and there were numerous information boards allong the way. It was not crowded just before dinner the evening we were there.

This was an unexpected find - thanks Trip Advisor. We arrived in the late afternoon directly from the airport (had a tight schedule). The walk was adventurous, as we are in our seventies. I've read various descriptions of the length and terrain of the trail leading to the tower; let's say that it was a bit challenging for us, as the round trip distance is about a mile. It's located on a meandering uphill path that forms a loop - we recommend going up on the left path at the fork and coming back down on the right. The wonderful views along the way accommodates short rests. The tower is very historic in that it was built by Seth Bullock as a tribute upon the death of Teddy Roosevelt, and is registered as a national historic place. It's well maintained and offers great views from the top. There's several plaques along the path.

2 mile drive out of Deadwood. Trail (loop) from parking lot was well defined. Worth the short walk for the view - in and out of the tower!

This off the beaten path spot is a hidden gem! Expect some uphill walking, but nothing too strenuous. The views from the lookouts are amazing and the Monument is a great piece of history.

We enjoyed the trail and view. The tower is especially neat to see. We walked to the top of the tower (the stairs are a little steep and narrow). Gorgeous views!

we visited the monument for the very first time. there is a hike up hill to get there. path is pretty easy to walk. make sure you have plenty of water for your hike. area is very clean and the views are beautiful. the tower it self is also great. you are able to walk up the spiral stair case to the top and have a great view from there as well. there are bathrooms on site also a picnic area.
