Sometimes you know what to see and Tripadvisor confirms it and sometimes you find the strangest things on Tripadvisor that you have to find them. I stumbled across Pringle preparing for our trip and when I saw this, I knew I had to see on the way to Custer. It truly is the biggest pile of bicycles I have ever seen. You can see and get pictures from the road. You kind of have to see this when you are in the Black Hills because there is nothing like it.

We were unaware of this sculpture as we departed the Black Hills on our way to Denver. It is a somewhat disorganized display with trails going through it, but it wasn’t constructed to be displayed at a New York art gallery. In fact, it’s part of Americana in a trailer park alongside the roadway. There’s no charge to see, nobody to stop you from going through it and nothing to pay for. You’ll want to see it in the day time. It’s interesting and imaginative, but don’t drive a long way to see it; you only need about 5 minutes at the display. A fun little slice of creative genius in America’s heartland.

One of the few things to stop and see on the way to Rushmore. There are a bunch of deer around at night. Cool old style road art.

It is an easy & fun roadside stop. Just off the main road, with easy parking anywhere nearby. Take a quick walk through on your next road trip.

We spotted this alongside the highway and had to get a closer look. Never seen something like this before. Pretty clever!

When I learned of this "sculpture" I was eagerly looking forward to seeing it, but the reality was kind of underwhelming. Pretty much just a pile of junked bikes, without any real form. There is an archway and a bit of a maze, but essentially just a jumble. The "creator" must have quite a twisted mind to put this together, and it's interesting for a couple minutes stop, if you are passing by. Otherwise, give it a pass.

Looking for an adventure, enjoyable and historical, self contained bicycle vacation? I highly recommend the best: George S. Mickelson Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. A few years ago, my friend Bill and I wanted to experience an exciting self contained bike ride that would only take about one week to complete. The Mickelson Trail filled our dreams about that adventure.

The Mickelson Trail is an 109 mile abandoned railroad line from Deadwood, SD to Edgemont, SD passing though the famous Black Hills. There are many make shift camp spots along the trail including places to have a lunch. Going south on the trail, you will come to the developing Crazy Horse Memorial. We spent time to see how they are building the Memorial and enjoyed the restaurant for lunch. About a few miles from Crazy Horse Memorial is a second class highway, number 244 that will take you seven miles to Mount Rushmore. This side trip is worth the historical experience.

At the southern end of the Trail, Edgemont, SD, you can camp out and get ready for the return 109 mile trip back to Deadwood, SD. You will feel the excitement of being out in the wilderness, seeing wild animals and enjoying the beautiful scenery. You may get information about the trail from the South Dakota Department of Tourism.

It was just fun to see a pile up of bikes that were ? nonfunctional anymore. More interesting than Carhenge. I took a dark photo of it which made it more fun with the reflectors lighting up. The pile puts this small South Dakota town on the map.

OK, its an artistic junk pile of the most common transportation device in the world. You can laugh, pass it by, take a picture.

But if you stop, walk through the archway and feel the broken times. The tiny Huffys, so fresh a few years ago from WalMart, now rusting gently before their final winter. A beautiful Columbia lady's bike, Sturmey-Archer gearshift still chromed, the lady and the company that made it long gone. Holding a fence, a Cannondale R500 road bike, its race (and maybe its owner), stopped short, metal bent by a violent collision.

As you finish your reflection around the sculpture's circle you see shiny aluminum cooling fins of, a bike? Yes, the remains of an e-bike controller. The technology of the future already within the sickle's compass...all glory is fleeting.

Worth the short walk around.
