Casteldermot è nata come insediamento monastico già verso l’ottavo secolo. Rimangono in zona una bella torre tonda in granito che risale alla fine del decimo secolo ma nella parte alta è stata modificata con merli. C’è anche un bell’arco romanico con due delle tipiche croci in pietra. Luogo suggestivo che merita la visita.

We were staying locally so walked around the Round Tower, it’s well signposted, and plenty of info on the site.

There are also some high crosses worth to visit. The graveyard is quite nice, and the friary on the other side of the street should not be missed. A nice trail connects these 2 sites.

The Castledermot Round Tower is set in a leafy churchyard and graveyard just off the main street of the town.
The round tower is one of the finest in Ireland and the monastic complex dates from the 9th century. It eas obce the monastery's bell tower and it's unusual in that its doorway is not very far from the ground and it stands on the north side of what was once the monastery as opposed to the usual which would have been to the west.
It cannt be climbed however so you'll have to be content with admiring it from its base.
I was a bit disappointed to see that it is joined to the church. What I mean is, why on earth was it ever allowed to deprive this majestic round tower of its free standing status? Although it does take from it in my opinion, it certainly doesn't ruin the experience and the tower is still resplendent and well worth a visit.
The 8th century high crosses there are beautifully intricate and stunningly well preserved. There is the base of a third but the two that stand on either side of the church are worth the trip in themselves.
There is also a beautifully reconstructed Romanesque entrance arch as you enter the complex in front of the church.
All told, a gem of a place and totally free to visit. Well worth your time.

We love to find some of the small, special places that make other cities and countries so special. This is definitely one of those finds. Sadly we stopped by after hours and were unable to take the guided tour, but there were strategically placed informational markers that helped us understand the historical value of this lovely site.

In this little churchyard, you can see :
• A Romanesque arch
• Two high crosses
• a stone with a hole ... maybe a 'swearing stone'
• A round tower
• Ireland's only 'hog back' burial stone ....

Heaps of ancient antiquities - all just within a two minute walk !

In the graveyard 3 impressive High Crosses, next to an impressive high round tower, all standing isolated, and no pubic around at our time in autumn.

What a beautiful spot with great historical history. I found it well worth finding this place and walking the grounds and taking pictures. A great add on activity.

Two lovely high crosses to add to the collection of those seen so far. Worth also looking at Moon (more difficult to find) if you are in the area.

Located in county kildare but actually Carlow is your closest main town and you can get here by motorway. This is easy to miss and its not on the main toursit guidebook list. However it is worth a stop if you are in the area and interested in this type of history. There is a high cross here and also one of the only Christian Viking graves in Europe in the graveyard, on the left as you approach the church it is covered with a long flat stone. There is a groundskeeper and if he is around will point out other stuff and stone that would interest you. I went to boarding school in Castledermot and we would sneak out in the afternoons for a walk and come here. ahhh the memories of youth.
