In the bay of St. Helier lies the impressive St. Elizabeth Castle. Built when the older Gorey Castle was no longer adequate and from here St. John's Church could be reached. Helier be defended. Over the centuries, some more was regularly built, even during WWII, when the Germans put a gun tower on top of it. It is a beautiful castle to walk around and to enjoy the beautiful views of the Jersey coastline.
During the ebb you can walk to the castle via a wooden boardwalk, but there is also a very nice amphibious vehicle waiting for you, bumping over the seabed, in ten minutes to the castle.
Use the Jersey Heritage Pass.

This is a large castle area with an interesting and unique history spanning multiple wars. For me the highlight was definitely the canon & musket firing demonstrations & the entertaining talks about these. I feel much more confident in firing a canon & musket without injuring myself! The importance of firepower is still relevant today as the world continues its conflicts.

I just went to the coast to see the options..., and in 10 minutes I was on this 'waterbus'. This transport was not only convenient but also unique! It took about 10-20 mins to get to the castle(s), and about 1-2 hours there. All in the afternoon, beautiful weather and lights, sunshine, sea... It was hard to imagine that there was war, times ago. The walls are full of hundreds of years history. There were almost no visitors this time, so sometimes I could just walk around or sit alone, listening to the nature... Sometimes it was like a treasure hunt adventure, with the freedom to explore any part of the island. That made this even more interesting, since it was up to us, how much and what we'll have as takeaways, and all in a relaxed mood! The small museums are also great, people really do a lot to keep up and develop the place! I recommend this visit to everyone! Note: I bought souveniers, which I don't do too frequently. But when I do, then those are good quality and/or the activity

Great experience.
Our guide at the castle was very knowledgeable lady and made the experience so much better.
We took the ferry bus out and walked back via the causeway which appeared when the tide went out which was great fun.
Highly recommended.

After saying that nobody would ever get me on am amphibious ferry (duck boat!) Jersey has managed it. On the day we went to visit Elizabeth Castle it wasn't possible to access via the causeway due to tides so this was the only option - and it was fine! Just 8 minutes or so there and back and I actually enjoyed it.
A lovely lady on reception greeted us and we then joined Peter's tour at 1pm. Jersey born to a Jersey born mother, Peter's love and passion about Jersey and its history made for a fascinating tour. As we were trying to pack as much into a two and a half day trip and wanted to visit St Aubin later that day, I feel like I need to come back to continue to explore the area which is not a problem as I've fallen a little bit in love with Jersey!

We are delighted that you 'braved' a trip on the amphibious ferry to enable you to visit Elizabeth Castle - and even enjoyed it! It's a large site and we spent several hours exploring.
We timed it so we walked across the causeway to get there and caught the amphibious ferry back.
We arrived just as the guided tour was beginning so we joined it.
Alan (I think that was his name) was one of the best tour guides we've ever had.
He was very knowledgable and his clear booming voice meant we caught every word as he explained the castle without going into too much detail and the pace was quick.
The tour lasted about an hour and we then went back to the areas we had seen to explore further at a more leisurely pace.
The cafe has a lovely garden area up the steps to the left hand side.

Such a great visit! From the amphibious vehicle across the bay to the history of the site. There is a lot to see on in the Castle, we had booked onto a tour however when we arrived we just walked about on our own to experience the site.
If you are unsteady on your feet you might struggle, there are a lot of steps and it's uneven but it's history!!
I personally think, the best part of the visit was finding a hidden seating area by the café (middle of the island). There is a sign on the left hand-side, go upstairs and there is a little garden. It made us feel like we were the only people on the island, and lots of sparrows came to visit us. Very enjoyable!

Thank you for leaving such valuable feedback. The castle is sited on 23 acres, so it is good to take your time as you journey around the castle in order to take in the history and views. The cafe garden, you located, is very special little area to just sit and appreciate the flora and fauna.

Elizabeth Castle is a fascinating castle and it's well worth a visit. You can get across to it on buses that go in the water. Great for wandering about and learning the history of the castle. Prices are good. A must do whilst staying in Jersey.

We visited a couple of times, the first time we were able to walk along the causeway which is a lovely walk. No tours or anything were available when we first visited, I think due to staff shortage, but on our second visit we enjoyed a guided tour around the Castle, a "gunner" who was dressed in costume and demonstrating a musket and talking all about how one is used etc. Elizabeth Castle and The Hermitage are steeped in history. On our second trip it was high tide and we used the Amphibious vehicle. There's a small shop, toilets and a cafe.

How lovely that you were able visit the castle more than once and experienced walking and the amphibious ferry. If you wish to take full advantage of the various tours and Living History included in your admission on the site on different days, we would recommend giving the Castle ticket kiosk a call before visiting to check what is scheduled on the day.

We had a very enjoyable visit to the castle. It was pleasant weather so we enjoyed the walk both ways across the causeway. The castle is steeped in history and thank you to volunteer guide Susan for her interesting and informative tour. And thank you to the Sergeant (Chris) for his entertaining demos on how to load and fire a cannon and a musket.
We spent about two hours there - including a cafe stop. There is a beautiful little cafe garden to sit in up some steps but we only discovered it by accident at the end.
Wonderful views.

Hi we are visiting Jersey at the end of November, unfortunately when Elizabeth Castle, is no longer open. Does anyone know if we would still be able to walk across to the castle if tide is out?

Yes, you can walk to the castle however you can’t actually go in the castle. I think it’s not necessarily worth the trip without the full visit.
You could try searching Gorey Castle, which is a castle on the east side of Jersey which is equally as important.

As far as I know. There is a good coffee shop there and certainly plenty of space. Worth contacting the attraction direct to be sure. Enjoy.

Hi, the castle is now closed until Spring 2018. You can still visit Mont Orgueil Castle in Gorey (open Friday to Monday).

Walk to castle at low tide, how long does it take? Does it slippery and do we need wellies? I'm planning to just wear trainers if it's ok, but really want to experience the feeling of walk out at low tide. Thanks!

Trainers will be OK,it is slippery if seaweed is on the walkway but you can walk on the sand and depends on how fast you want to take it but no more than 15 minutes on a slow pace
