We have lived in Guernsey for 3 years and never visited, it was a wet day and my wife’s birthday so we decided to telephone and luckily we were able to book. We joined an English speaking tour made up of about 12 people with a young French lady who was immensely knowledgeable about the house and Victor Hugo as tour guide.
The house is aptly described by many reviewers. Idiosyncratic, lavishly decorated, opulent, it reflects in a unique way Hugo’s personality values and style. It’s a time travel into his life in the 19th century and the issues in France he was so passionate about that had resulted in his exile.
His time spent in Guernsey was the most energetic from a writing viewpoint and creative time in his life. You can imagine him writing Les Miserable while looking at to sea from his study.
The guide took us through the house telling us many enlightening stories about the furniture, furnishings, paintings, photographs, Victor Hugo’s family and life on Guernsey.
The tour took about 75 minutes. The tour included walking up to the second floor on steep stairs, it also involved being on your feet without rest so we wouldn’t recommend it was appropriate for anyone with mobility issues. Also I can’t imagine it’s going to interest anny under 15’s so it’s not a child thing.
We felt it was a very rewarding and interesting experience. Worth recommending to anyone. We loved it!

Il faut réserver à l'avance, par internet. Nous sommes arrivés en avance, ce qui nous a permis de visiter le jardin et la belle vue sur les iles et la France au loin.
Les visites sont obligatoirement guidées par une conférencière de bon niveau, en groupes de 8 à 10 personnes. Les visites sont en anglais ou en français.
C'est passionnant. On boit les paroles de la guide qui connait très bien son sujet.
La visite se fait en 1h. On visite toutes les salles du rez-de-chaussée jusqu'en toiture et c'est un émerveillement dans chaque pièce.

Fantastic tour of this fascinating house - the guide was great and really brought the history and context to life.
There are quite a lot of stairs so worth keeping in mind for anyone who would struggle with mobility.

Beautifully situated house with views all the way to France. The house is full of surprises from the views from the garden, through each floor. We learned a lot more about Victor Hugo that we knew, and now need to read up about him. Highly recommended. Make sure that you book in advance.

The most amazing house! A little part of Paris this house is bohemian and is full of many cultures clashing together. The tour guide was brilliant- articulate and had a deep understanding of the house and it’s characters who lived there. A truly worthwhile visit- despite the 5 floors to negotiate

The house can be visited only with the guide, which takes about one hour. It's great to hear all the stories about his life and books he wrote.

The garden was not interesting or well kept. The house was interesting, lots of contradictions such dark rooms and light rooms, heavy decoration and delicate. We were surprised that all of the French staff spoke perfect English except our guide, the entire group struggled to understand him. He also was not prepared to explain the major contradiction in Victore Hugo's life between family and his renown for extra marital affairs, especially the role of his long term mistress. It could have been a better experience, especially at £12 each.

Bien que la visite "en français" soit faite par une étrangère écorchant la langue française, le propos était intéressant et la maison mérite le détour, pour mieux comprendre la vie de Victor Hugo en exil, et peut être un peu l'homme.

Fascinating and knowledgeable tours of a quirky and historic property, restored a couple of years ago with great sympathy. Whether or not you are a fan of Hugo as an author, you cannot help but be enchanted by the place

We phoned the day before! No harm in pre booking as once we arrived and no spaces or English tours! Then it shut all last year !!!!

vous pouvez réserver à l'office du tourisme sur le port, mais sommes allées la matin à Haute ville house et avons pu réserver pour l'après mid les guides ne prennetnque 10 personnes à la fois! jardin de victor Hugoi est gratuit et vaut le détour

The garden is accessible and very pleasant. The house has rather rickety old stairs. They may let yo look in the dining room on the ground floor.

Yes, I was given to believe that it would be closed all through 2018 by the guides in residence last March, 2017. You probably know that thehouse, although in Guernsey is operated by French people with govetnance from France.

It was not much, around 6-8£, it can be busy, so make a reservation to be sure you can get a tour in English.

It was under £10. Maybe £7 or £8. My daughter was free. Well worth the money. Seems a lot for a tour but it's one of the best ones out there.

I am visiting Guernsey in early October (from 4th), it seems that HH is open until September but I can't find any exact dates and I really hope that we can visit the house, it would be a real shame if we'd miss it by a few days. Does anyone know the date it closes?
