Wonderful walking and cycling route in a delightful part of Devon. We cycled from Bideford to torrington and back and it was a fab day. Beautiful landscapes and river crossings including the long old railway tunnel. Really worth doing. Alot of the places mentioned in the book are all here. A wonderful place to take your away just for a bit

Lovely path on old railway line for an easy (near level) cycle route eg Instow to Braunton to new Quay Cafe for coffee break, returning via Fremington Keys for a delicious snack lunch. About 20 miles return.
Or the other way to Torrington, same distance with cafe at old railway station there. Could go even further to Okehamptonbut you're on holiday.
Can get a bit crowded but everyone is helpful.

Such a great feature of North Devon the Taka trail (recycled railway line) forms part of the South west coast path. From Braunton through Barnstaple and Bideford then on to Fremington, Instow then out to Torrington and beyond. Has multiple access points and a largely parallel bus service ( number 25 ). Great for walking, running, cycling and strolling along with the dog. Cafe's along route at Instow, Fremington, Bideford, Torrington and East Yard. Cycle repairs and hire at Braunton, Barnstaple (in town), Bideford and Torrington.

Gets popular in the summer. Can be windy and bleak in winter on the long flat estuary sections between Instow and Barnstaple. For best wooded sections start at the great cafe "The Puffing Billy" just below Torrington and head either way.

Part of national cycle route 27 that stretches from Plymouth to Illfracombe. When walking as a group be sure to all gather on the same side when cyclists ring bell and come along to prevent last second run-across by dogs and kids.

My favorite part of going back to North Devon every summer, even worth a walk or cycle in the winter. Family fun, lots to explore. Great way to see the countryside.

been on this cycle path many times, tarmac most of the way so suitable for wheelchair / mobility scooters as well. the path is good in both directions. go to barnstaple or go towards torrington, torrington is slightly up hill all the way from instow but obviously down hill all the way back. lots of places to see stunning scenery, several bridges to cross the river which are flat / level with the path. bit of a killer last 1/2 mile into torrington as it is pretty steep but you can always stop at the bottom by the pub.
going the other way runs along side the river and has stunning views all the way. watch out if there is a head wind coming off the sea as it blows quite hard and right in your face on the way back. fremington quay is a good half way point with a cafe.
you can watch some beautiful sunsets from any where a long the track.
take a picnic
no traffic and very peaceful
excellent for dogs & kids

Went with friends and their children who drve their bikes through dog mess. North Devon has a reputation for being a dog toilet and earns that accolade regularly.

Cycled from Barnstaple to Torrington. Good path, lovely scenery on route, stopped at Bideford for lunch. Excellent, nice and flat, not too busy. Intend to do again soon, maybe cycle further!

Part of the area that we had not done before. A very easy trail to walk or cycle with tarmacked pathways. Nice views of the estuary. Sat outside a pub in Instow quay and had a Cider. Lovely way to spend a day when the weather was variable but not raining. Better parking in Bideford than Instow - reasonably priced and more of it. It did extend the walk by 1 1/2 miles as we parked on the other side of the river. Did about 8-9 miles on the round trip. If you park nearer - about 7. Train signal box worth having a look at, particularly if you are a train enthusiast.

We walked along the Tarka Trail, which is an old railway line route to Great Torrington, and back. One way is approx. 4.5 miles. The walk is varied with beautiful scenery as you pass the river Torridge, go through the old train tunnel and then on to the Beam Weir. You will cross over several bridges before reaching the ‘Puffing Billy’s’ cafe in Great Torrington, which is the perfect pitt stop. A lot of cyclists do also use this route and there’s isn’t a separate cycle path so you do have to listen out for them passing you by.
