Car park cost £4 with a super walk down to the picturesque lighthouse. Beautiful scenic walk, dog friendly. You can do a circular walk to the light house & around back to the car park. Takes about a hour. Spectacular views of the whole bay towards Blackpool Sands. Definitely recommend,

Lovely visit to Start Point lighthouse. It was a beautiful sunny day and on the picturesque walk down to the lighthouse, we could see seals playing in the sea below. Once at the lighthouse, we joined one of the hourly tours (held on Wednesdays and Sundays). It was a brilliant and very interesting tour led by a lovely lady who was great with the children. She involved them, listened to what they had to say and kept their interest. Highly recommend!

A very enjoyable trip - there are only 6 lighthouses run by Trinity House that remain open for tours. Mary, our guide, was both affable and knowledgeable. She explained about the history of the site, how it was built, why it was built, why it is still required, the life of the Keeper and how the site evolved over time both out of necessity and the advent of newer technology.
There is about a 1000m walk from the car park to the Light along a cliff path, with wonderful views along the coast towards Dartmouth - make sure you take the walking time into account when arriving for a tour - don't get to the car park with 5/10 mins to spare as you'll be late. It's slightly uphill on the way back but OK if you take it slowly, although the path does double up as a narrow private driveway for vehicles so there is nowhere to put benches to sit on.
We didn't book ahead (I don't know if you can), but the tour wasn't busy.
The sea was unusually calm and the view from the top was fantastic. The steps within the Lighthouse weren't as steep or as narrow as I expected. There is a small gift shop at the bottom.
I had been up a couple of Lighthouses before (possibly the same one twice) but still found this trip fascinating. I think it was about £8-9 per ticket for an adult, but well worth it to experience something a bit different.
Would recommend bringing sensible shoes (eg trainers or hiking boots) but I think shoes can be borrowed if required.

Mattiscombe Beach and start point lighthouse are a great place to go seal watching, although you’ll have to do so at a distance, so take binoculars and wear walking shoes. This spot is very secluded, so it’s ideal for a romantic walk at sunset.

The toilets at this carpark are beautiful and clean porta loos.

A great walk along the top of the cliffs to see the lighthouse. A proper lighthouse all white and big and round!! Prepare for the walk back if you are a little older (Like me) it is a very long uphill walk but then you will have realised that after the very long downhill walk to the lighthouse!! Great views the whole route,

We were so impressed with our visit to Start Point. We were a family returning with our elderly father for a nostalgic trip, having visited 20 years previously. Our tour guide , Mary, was outstanding: patient , friendly and informative. We couldn't recommend this visit more highly. The views are breath taking and the history of the light house fascinating. Thank you. It is a very special and unique place.

Superb coastal views of distant seaside villages, beaches and a visit from massive tuna fish playing in the calm waters. The lady leading the guided tour filled 45 minutes with most interesting historical and local news leaving us wanting to learn more, gave us plenty of time to answer all questions and to recover breath when going up the many steps to the top ofthe lighthouse. Thoroughly recommend the tour even when weather is less idyllic (with suitable waterproofs)

Stunning place to visit not only was the tour guide so good it was the first tour I've ever enjoyed her personality showed how much she enjoyed her work and the scenery is out of this world walked the costal path the other side of the light house beautiful cove when you can swim and sat and watched the seals playing in the water great day out take a picnic and spend a full day there

MIght I suggest that when deep in Devon countryside you're unlikely to find any ATMs! As for not having a card reader, they're expensive to hire and the lighthouse is only open a few days a week, partly because of staffing problems, and less in the Spring and Autumn and not at all in the winter, expect for a few days at New Year.
Somebody tried having a food and drink kiosk a couple of years ago, but it didn't pay. Sometimes there are not that many people at the carpark and even at busiest times, many people bring their own picnics. When you come from a large town or city, it's easy to forget that the country is, indeed, a different country, with no coffee shops round every corner. It took me a while, after we moved down here! In good boy scout tradition, it really is best to 'be prepared'!!

Please does anyone know if there is access to the car park 24 hours a day. We are planning to visit the lighthouse at dusk after a day out somewhere else, so we can see light in all its glory and would hate to make the trip only for a gate to be stopping us from parking

The car park is normally staffed (there is a small fee to park) so I suspect it will have a closed gate at night, but please bear in mind this is a lighthouse visible for 20+ miles so you don't need to park in the car park to see the light. Also you can walk to the light house on a range of footpaths.
