We spent a week in Pear Tree, one of the self catering apartments in the Victorian extension to this medieval castle. It was a great place to stay with large well heated rooms, a well equipped kitchen with a cooker, and a washing machine in a separate utility room. Everything worked well and was very clean and tidy. You are free to explore the gardens as you wish.
Despite being in the centre of Tiverton it was very quiet at night. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance including a Marks and Spencer food shop. There are also Tesco and Morrison's supermarkets nearby though probably best to use a car if stocking up on heavy items. The local market is also worth a visit.
Alison, the owner, is very welcoming and attentive and gave us a free guided tour of the rest of the castle which was really interesting.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can highly recommend it for a good value self catering venue.

My husband and I spent a week in Pear Tree Cottage, which is actually a ground floor apartment. This one bedroom apartment is big and very clean. The kitchen is well equipped and has a dishwasher, there is a small laundry room off the bathroom with a washer and dryer. The owner is very friendly and gave us gifts of fruit from the orchard. A great base for exploring mid Devon and Tiverton itself is well worth a walk around.

Stayed in Castle Lodge for 3 nights. Excellent facilities and very well equipped. Owner extremely welcoming and helpful. Great experience for our first foray away from home since lockdown.
Visited with family adult son but unable to select this option from list.

This Castle now a residential home still had some original features Although ruins. We recommend the guided tour which consisted of a 1&1/2 hour your by a local guide who was very knowledgeable and kept the tour amused with numerous tales of the Castle history and inhabitants.Well worth the visit.

Here is an object lesson in how to present a small heritage attraction to best advantage. If you've a couple of hours to spare there is much to satisfy the enquiring mind: display panels are detailed and informative, with the odd amusing twist to maintain interest. Storytelling is particularly strong when covering the period between the Wars of the Roses and the the Stuart Restoration; the whole complemented by an excellent armoury. The owners and attendant staff are engaging and keen to please. Tiverton Castle is clearly much loved; a charming venue worth seeking out.

Did not bother to enter this site as they wanted £7 for a maximum of three hours to visit this venue, which we thought was overpriced.

In some ways, Tiverton Castle isn't a place you'd go out of your way to visit - and, as it's still privately occupied, there are only a couple of days a week when you can get in to the Grounds. More prohibitive seems to be the maximum of 3 hours that you can be there.
So, it's naturally off-putting...
...but it's a little gem.
The strength of the place is in the softly-spoken ex-lawyer who guides you round the 'open bits' for an incredible two hours dealing with the site in a historical order that places everything in its correct order - from pre-Norman occupations on and around the place through the civil wars and up to the present day.
Ask him for some more information on a subject and he keeps coming up with more details.
This was a real gem on our short holiday but be prepared to be standing or walking slowly around for somewhere approaching 2 hours. There are seats in some rooms and places to lean up against outside but others may need these but that would be the only down side.
We had just 45 minutes after the tour to take in the Gardens which are colourful in themselves - the wife went there while I hunted down the present owner and chatted to him about the small war collection of Roundhead armour and weaponry that he has.
He's very knowledgeable, too, and I got a lot from his responses and information.
If you're in the area, this is not a place to miss.

Parked outside St Peters Church where there is free parking (limited to 2 hours at peak times). More parking inside the castle after the gates are open but the castle entrance is quite narrow so be careful. We are both Historic Houses members so entry for us was free (normally £7 each for adults and £3 for children aged 7 to 16). Got an introductory talk but unfortunately there was no free guided tour on the day we visited. There are detailed notes in most rooms so this this wasn't really a problem. Some of the stairs inside the castle are very steep indeed (particularly in the tower) and a tip for those with difficulty on stairs is to enter the upstairs rooms using the 'exit' stairs as these are much easier to use and have handrails on both sides. Just ask about this when you pay your entry fee. If you are unable to climb stairs at all then entry is half price. We enjoyed the civil war displays and you can try on a roundhead helmet if you like - very heavy! The gardens are a pleasure to walk in but in places you definitely need a head for heights. Entry to just the gardens is £2. A very enjoyable visit and I would allow about 2 hours to see everything.
