An excellent small museum ranging from fossils, to nets made for the space age.
Bridport is famous for ropes and nets, which have been traded across the world for centuries. NASA came here for space shuttle crash nets and the British army use 'secret' material ones instead or bar armour!
An enthusiastic volunteer even allowed us to make a small length of rope.

Brilliant small museum with loads to see, including an art exhibition. The guides were so welcoming and there was lots of fun and interesting interpretation throughout - the tactile collection of different locally-made nets worked really well and there were great, up-to-date touchscreens and sound recordings of people who worked in local industries. We also liked the insights into the museum’s history and the approaches to looking after the collections by staff and volunteers today in the captions. The passion and personality of the people who work here shone through. Definitely worth a visit if you’re curious about Bridport’s social and cultural history!

As a visitor to Bridport, I was pleasantly surprised by the Bridport Museum and its breadth of knowledge to share about the town's historical significance. The museum offers an accesible history to Bridport's industry and was even welcomed to learn how to make rope alongside their enthusiastic volunteer, Sue.
Wonderful experience, highly recommend.

This is a fantastic small museum. Filled with information on the important rope industry in Bridport. But more than that the people working there were extremely helpful with our questions and provided hints on how to find out more about the area. And above all was Sue our rope demonstrator. Fantasy. Not to be missed!!

Superb museum - staff of volunteers very knowledgeable. The historic walk around town each Thursday @ 11am is absolutely superb.
Talks on Monday @ 5:30pm very interesting too.

Unless you're interested in rope making there is very little to see here. If it was free fare enough but the charge of £5 seems too much when it only takes 20 minutes to see everything. Lovely old building though and friendly staff.

A long overdue re visit since the museum has been updated - really pleasant morning spent with 2 of the grandchildren - all the exhibits were beautifully displayed and was impressed to see how they had made secret spy holes which thrilled the grandchildren, loads of info on the local area past and present. But the best part of the morning was a very interesting talk and display on the process of rope making (which Bridport is still renowned for), and the boys were given the opportunity to make their own lengths of rope which they were delighted about. We’re never too old to stop learning, well worth a visit, especially when the rope maker is doing a demo.

Such a wonderful little asset to the town. Limited opening hours but well worth seeking out. Entertained the grandkids too!

A small but fascinating museum. We visited on a Heritage day en route from Dorchester to Exeter. We were pleasantly greeted and offered a talk and demonstration of rope making. My husband participated with much enjoyment while I went around the museum appreciating the exhibits and local history. Everything was well presented and it was clear that the staff had a real enthusiasm for their jobs.
