A superb volunteer-run exhibition of all things Jurassic. As 70 year olds we were fascinated by the richness and clarity of the scientific information, and we saw children as young as 5 entranced by the size of the genuine fossils on display, the hands-on discovery, and pictures, diagrams and videos. Lots of information on how to hunts for fossils on yield beach, and beach safety. We loved it, and are going back very soon.

I took a large fossil to the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre to report finding it the previous day at Seatown and all the staff (Anna, Phil, and James the guide!) couldn't have been more helpful in explaining the process, as well as being really interested in what I had found, and advising me on how to care for it. The museum was great too, with many fascinating local fossil finds. We all enjoyed our visit and would love to return again soon.

I am nearly 60 years and ld and have been looking for a real fossil for 30 years . I went on the organised fossil hunting trip today and it was brilliant. Great friendly staff who were very knowledgeable and I found a fab Fossil !! 😁

Fun experience but the videos and gift shop before the walk made us believe we would find larger fossils when in reality most were smaller than a coin.

When planning our family holiday to Charmouth we decided to book up on a fossil hunting guided tour of Charmouth beach - it is essential you book on as places sell out very quickly!
It cost us about £36 for 2 adults one child which might seem expensive, however when you consider the fact you have an experienced geologist (shout out to Phil) and volunteers who come along, Clint and Harry (Harry is a paleontologist) accompanying you AND the fact that the money you spend for these wonderful people's services goes towards the Charmouth Heritage charity I think it is a more than reasonable price to pay.
A large group meet at the designated meeting point and after an approximate 15 minute pre talk you're lead to a safe area and are supervised the entire time.
Lately there have been large chunks falling from the cliffs so the staff are VERY cautious and have your safety in mind the entire time.
They are there to advise you on what you're finding, if they had a penny for everytime someone approached with a rock and said "is this anything?" they'd be billionaires!! They are fantastically friendly and helpful.
We spent a good 1 hour 15 mins raking in the shale and even though we found enormous amounts of bemenite (fossilised squid) we got a couple of other trinkets like parts of ammonite fossils, sadly not full ones, and loads of seaglass - ot fossils you may cry but treasure none the less for my daughter.
Afterwards you are free to carry on searching through the rocks but you MUST be wary of the times for tides.
The centre itself if free to enter and there are loads of little things to look at, a film (£1 for adults, 50p for children) to watch before going fossil hunting full of tips and tricks on how to spot a potential fossil.
Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and helpful.
I cannot reccomend this alternative activity enough to you - please go and support this fantastic place.

We did the 1.5 hour fossil tour run by the heritage centre. It was so good. Started with an introduction to the area and the fossils we should be looking out for (they also sent a really good video before hand which we watched a few times). Then they took us to one of the recent landslides on the beach. It was really exciting to look for fossils and even more exciting when we started to find some. We found lots of Belemnites, a free Crinoids, some calcite ammonites and my favourite - some fools gold ammonites. I found a tiny complete one which was my prized find. I love it. Amazing to be able to add the bits to our fossil collection. Really looking forward to a return visit now we know what we are looking for.

Staff very helpful and willing to identify finds from the beach. The people we encountered were very good at engaging with children and getting them to say what they thought they had found. Exhibitions were very helpful for contextualising the history.

Really lovely centre and its free to visit which often museums and such aren't!
The staff are all lovely and friendly and they really do support their local collectors which I think is so lovely.
You can also attend guided fossil walks here.
If you are disabled or have a kid in a buggy there is a ramp around the rear of the building which means you don't need to clamber the stairs as they're pretty steep.
Lots of lovely specimens etc within the centre.

Nice place with fascinated people who like to talk about fossils, how they are formed, what to look out for when searching and things like that. Definitely recommended to go inside before walking onto the beach!

A lovely little museum with all you could need to know about fossils on the jurassic coast. The volunteers were so kind and engaging with the kids, they were delighted to spend time looking at the fossils our kids found on the beach and bringing millions of years of history to life to explain what they had found.

Other than charmouth which other nearby towns are good place for hotels at reasonable price. Charmouth seems to be booked out for most of second week of august or too expensive.

The guided fossil walks are for all ages and we walk for 5-10 minutes down the beach before we start our search. We take our time so there is no rush to keep up with everyone else.
The time of day for fossil hunting depends on the tide. We need a low tide to find the fossils and this changes by approximately 40 minutes a day, so some of our fossil walks are in the morning, some across lunch and some during the afternoon. It is best to check our website calendar for all dates and times. We can also give you the daily tide times here at the centre.
Most of our public guided walks take place on the weekends and during school holidays, with schools visiting Monday-Friday during term time.

Belemnites and Ammonites mostly, if you go to the Heritage centre first the volunteers will show you what they are and which rocks and areas to find them.. Be careful near the cliffs as they can fall at any time,

Hi June, There is a book on sale in the centre that has all the tide times and the daily tide times are up in the centre. All the tide times websites I have looked for online are different to the tide times in the book we use - they vary everywhere you look though! The closest one was on Admiral Easy Tide but that still was out a fair bit. Unfortunately we cannot most HTML or website links to you, I just tried but TripAdvisor blocked it.
