A real hidden gem. Small but full of artifacts and history, lots to see and learn and some fascinating pieces. Well worth the entrance fee and I'm baffled how a few people have complained it's too expensive when there is so much to see and learn about here- you pay the same for a coffee in some places!

The staff member on hand was extremely welcoming , enthusiastic and knowledgeable when explaining the history of the museum and the artefacts .
She also assisted us with the local walks not far from the museum , which we found and enjoyed .

A lovely museum, small but lots to see and great value. Friendly, helpful and very informative staff. We've been holidaying in the area for years and it was really interesting to learn new things about one of our favourite places.

Lovely little museum of Portland - every aspect of the history of this fascinating area. Modern extension to two old cottages means several little rooms with different topics, inlcuding some steps and low headroom door!
Also sells small tubs of local ice cream!

A lovely museum run by people who are passionate about the history of Portland. I learnt so much and definitely want to go again!!!!!

Great for adults and children, small but interesting, some nice finds inside. worth a visit. Check opening times as closes out of season

A diversity of exhibits of historical findings discoved in the local area including early Roman items, fossils, ship wrecks dating back to Viking explorers, etc. Dr. Marie Stopes, the founder of the museum, had an interesting life from the education field (double PHDs), political career, social advocate of birth control, etc. Well before her time!

This museum has a range of displays of local history - founded by Marie Stopes.
There is a ship wreck section, Portland stone and quarrying section and more besides. There is a lovely garden at the back of the museum
Admission is currently £3.50 per adult - a bargain. There is a small but free car park almost opposite the museum too.
There are some steep steps to the ship wreck section which may be an issue for some visitors.

Just to small for the price one needs to get in to the establishment. There are whole museums in London 100 times bigger that are cheaper to get in to than this tiny cottage. Reduce the admission fees and maybe it would be good. I could not get over the price of entry whilst trying to enjoy the items there, sorry.

Hi Ray,
We’re so sorry you didn’t enjoy your visit to Portland Museum’s two cottages, gallery, courtyard and garden.
For a few years now we’ve kept our concession rate at £3.00 per person and it’s disappointing to hear from a visitor that it is too expensive.
May I suggest that if you are in our area you pop in and we will gladly reimburse you. If you give us a call of drop us a line via email we will make sure there is someone around to greet you. As you know, we are a charity and almost entirely run by volunteers. However, although the open season will finish at the end of October, the volunteers will still be present at the museum engaged in the many behind the scenes tasks that take place during the winter months.

Our first visit to this Museum, we found it well laid out with good info boards. So much on the local areas history and very good value for money. We spent almost 3 hours there so lots to see and read about. Congratulations to you all for a good small Museum, and we visit a lot,
The are also a few books on local history for sale in the little shop many by local authors.
We then walk down to Church Ope cove lovely.

Why is the word Rabbit not liked on the island of Portland? We used the word Bunny when I lived on the island in the 1960’s

It is a long standing superstition that The R-word is an ill omen/ unlucky. Portlanders do not say the R-word and choose alternative labels for them bunnies or long-eared furry things there are many reasons why.
1 older generations are still spooked by the fear that bunnies were to blame for landslips and quarry accidents and even their bad luck affected fishermen at sea. Fishermen and Quarrymen were allowed to return home if they saw a BUNNY on their way to work as it was perceived that something terrible was going to happen.
some younger generations don't say it because their parents have told them not to. some people do not say the R-word out of respect for the people who vehemently believe the superstition and stick to the tradition of not speaking the R-word. either way. its still a very much frowned upon word on the island today.
