So interesting, with photographs, models, really informative about this industry which used to be such a major part of the economy. Pictures of women carrying their men out to the boats, so that they would start the long voyage with dry boots , the story of the travelling gangs of women who would follow the fish down as far as north east England and up to Aberdeen - amazing. There are boats being reconstructed, and one to visit in the harbour. Waves is the museum cafe where we had a bowl of fish chowder, packed with fish and so tasty, with artisan bread for under£6.00.

After paying our entry fee in the front shop £9 per adult, with hindsight great value. Entering the small historic courtyard you enter the museum through a door up on left hand side, This then takes you in to early fishing history in dugouts up to modern trawlers going through many interesting stages. We found the Herring fleet stories really good as we come from an area closely associated. The story of the Zulu boats was also very good. It has so many rooms but all had plenty of interesting things going on. Many stories of tragedy as well due to the dangerous nature of the job. It was a thoroughly enjoyable visit for us and very educational to us even if we do come from a fishing port ourselves. Too many things too list just go and see for yourselves i would say.
We also ate the Waves Cafe onsite and had the seafood chowder which was good and reasonably priced. The shop is well stocked with interesting gifts and i would recommend a visit. You can enter the shop without visiting the museum. The museum staff were also very welcoming and friendly. Great afternoon out on the beautiful Fife coast..

Avoid the tearoom. Unpleasant and rude staff serving. Very abrupt when you asked a question about the selection available. You weren’t allowed to go to the counter to see what was there and the woman serving was annoyed we asked her to tell us what was there instead.
What we did receive were terrible pancakes which were opened out of a plastic wrapper and flung on a plate and dried out cake which looked and tasted like it had been out overnight.
Very poor experience overall.

A brilliant Tardis of a place. Packed full of different items covering the local history of fishing and the communities around it. Several boats of different types are part of the collection - including one humongous one undergoing careful renovation.
If I the area, visit this superb museum. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Allow at least an hour+ for this museum; it is extremely interesting, well presented and informative. Some lovely art work and great histories of the fishing industry and how hard life was for both men and women on the coast earning a living fishing and supplying fish worldwide. Absolutely fascinating. Would highly recommend.

From the outside this looks like not much stall, and I expected a few showcases and small exhibits. Once inside though you discover reconstructed cottages, engine rooms, cabins and best of all, complete ships.
It provides a great history of the industry that has been such a big part of life here and all along the British coastline.
If anything more could be presented, I’d have loved to learn more of the culture of fishing people; their music and tales, for example.

My wife and I visited the tearoom attached to the museum, it used to be a favourite of ours but today the staff attitude was extremely disappointing.
The female staff member lectured us for having sat at a table after telling us to sit anywhere . apparently if a plastic card is face down you are meant to know the area has not been sanitized, in the old days we would have pointed out the table surface was dirty and had not been cleaned.
Her demeanour was cheeky and disrespectful and we will not return there, Covid-19 does not excuse everything and offhand comments should not be accepted.
There are other café type places locally where the staff are welcoming I recommend people go to those venues instead

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback. We are very sorry that you had a bad experience this time. Covid-19 has presented challenges but as you say it does not excuse such a situation. We always try to make our visitors welcome while keeping everyone safe but we apologise if we got the balance wrong on this occasion and hope you will reconsider coming back.

This is usually a favourite place for us when we're visiting Anstruther but not this time.
The food was lovely, but the staff attitude left a lot to be desired.
I appreciate things are different with the covid regulations and that's understandable. However people can't be expected to know what a particular establishments rules are without some guidance. The staff were abrupt bordering on plain rude when we innocently and completely accidentally went the wrong way to the toilets. Completely un necessary in speaking to both myself & my Mum and also my teenaged nieces.
Would definitely think twice about coming back

I went here when I was really young and couldn't remember much about it other than that I loved it. I had decided to return last year (I'm from Edinburgh) but then lockdown happened and I had to cancel my plans. I finally went back last week and it was worth every added month of waiting time. Obviously if you have no interest in the history of the scottish fishing industry then maybe skip it (although I would question why you would want to go in the first place), however, I think this may be my favourite museum. The chronology is simple, effective, and exhaustive and it's clear that the curation of the building has been doen with such love and attention to detail that it feels utterly vibrant in every gallery. I spent three hours here but probably could've tacked another hour on. The staff were very friendly and dealt with everything covid-related really well even though there can be quite a few tight areas. I would've maybe liked a few more things in the shop as I was practically ready to throw money at anything but I can understand there is only so much space. Fantastic place, will probably make it an annual trip.

Thank you so much for such a positive review. We are so pleased your visit was rated so highly and that you found the staff friendly and helpful. Covid-19 has presented challenges but we are tried to make the experience enjoyable and safe. To rate us as possibly your favourite museum is much appreciated and we do hope to see you again next year.

Hi White Wing doesn't appear to have either stone ballast or water ballast tanks. Why does the REAPER not use modern water ballast tanks to balance her mast? It could save the joint wear of elderly volunteers carrying the traditional heavy stone ballast and be safer if REAPER rolled too far and the stone ballast shifted.

Reaper does not use modern water ballast tanks to balance her mast for several reasons.
First of all, as she is a traditional boat we try to use traditional methods where possible.
Additionally there are practical reasons for not using water ballast tanks. Having a water ballast means we would have to have big tanks bolted to the frames with no easy access to the bilge to check the condition of the timbers on a yearly basis. This is very important in a wooden boat. During the winter the ballast is moved to increase the air circulation in the bilge and keep the level of humidity as low as possible, which is not possible with a water ballast.
Finally the museum tries its best to avoid dangerous sea conditions and heavy winds with its boats. These are the only circumstances when the boat could turn and the ballast moved. It is always possible to have bad weather but we always keep an eye on the sea conditions before using either of our two seagoing vessels. We follow healthy and safety procedures for all aspects of the work on our fleet, regardless of who is doing the work.

Hi, when and why did the St Ayles Trust come replace the National Trust for Scotland as managers of this museum?

The museum was never operated by the National Trust for Scotland. The St Ayles site was acquired from the National Trust for Scotland in 1967 by the Scottish Fisheries Museum Trust. The museum then opened in 1969.

I'd like to know why the Scottish Fisheries Museum representative's answer stays at the top with 0 helpful votes? They've not voted up Nickd171, only saying instead that his description was good. I voted Nickd171 up but the attraction representative stays at the top and the person tries to claim that no less than 'several sculls are on display in dioramas with interpretation!' Would they care to offer now where in the museum these 'several with text details' are actually located?

The order that the responses appear is something that Trip Advisor control. We have no say over the order of anything posted onto our trip advisor page.
The interpretation for the Great Line Skulls are displayed alongside the dioramas.

I'd like to know what a 'Great Line Scull' does, it's one of many bits of junk lying around with no explanation and asking the staff gets a stony silence, as if they don't want to share any of their knowledge. There's one in the Main Boat Gallery and another in a BBC internet featured painting by John McGhee of 'Alex Black making (one) in his loft'.

Nickd171 describes a scull well.
Great and small lines were neatly coiled in a scull and layered with grass to prevent them snagging as they were shot out. We have several that are on display within our dioramas along with interpretation.
