Tons of History in Small Building!!
2021年10月 • 独自旅游
For such a small building, this place has a ton of cool historic artifacts! Besides being a jail with two floors (one for men and one for women), the artifacts here are interesting! I loved the fur coat from the 1930’s that was left at the dry cleaners and never claimed and the pictures from times past! There is no fee to enter, but a donation is recommended.

Very cool place! Lots of history. The man working was very knowledgeable and told us really cool things. This prison was deemed “one of the roughest he’d seen” by Johnny Cash. Unbelievable this was used until 1990. Very interesting stop while visiting Lynchburg!

Amazing piece of history. They ask for a $1 dollar donation to visit (please give more) but overall no cost. Very friendly staff and neat to see a jail from over a hundred years ago. Amazing piece of preserved history well worth the visit. Easy parking and walking distance from the Jack Daniel distillery. People would stay here for up to one year up to 6 people at a time and the sheriff lived on site.

This is a fascinating site with so much interesting history. You won't believe some of the facts you learn about this prison, the conditions, the people who ran it and lived upstairs w/ children no less, the prisoners, etc. I was given a tour by a former sheriff who had personal experience w/ the prison. His tour was great and so informative. I would consider this a must-see in this area of TN. Be sure to leave a donation.

Be good
This is a great little free side tour in Lynchburg. There is an area of shops in this part of town. It would be awful to stay in one of those small cells on those tiny beds. Worth a look to see the situation a criminal would go through. These were used up until 35 years ago.

Interesting historical site
There is a lot to see in this very small building - A LOT. It's very small and crowded with artifacts, and people wander around as they please. There were some interesting things to see, including some cool documents from Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, and a fake Jesse James carved into the wall upstairs. There is no fee, but they ask for a donation upon entry to help keep the lights on. Worth the time to stop by if you're in the area. Be advised, there are tall flights of stairs inside, narrow and tight so be careful when navigating the old halls.

A building full of history

We visited the Lynchburg square, the jail is located in the corner. When we went inside there was a volunteer about to give a tour, we made a small donation and joined in, it was very informative and he had a few stories to tell ! The jail was certainly full of history and cool little place to learn about .

A wealth of bad information
We stopped by here on a trip to Lynchburg, hoping to get some interesting info on the town. There was no one in the front when we walked in and we started to look around on our own. Once we started going upstairs to look at the cells, a man yelled for us and forced us to join a haphazard tour that appeared to be just finishing up.

We got there just in time for him to show us an old family reunion photo and explain that “slaves were considered family members” and that they took the last name of their former masters following the Civil War out of respect for the families. It would be great if this man could get a little history lesson before sharing this false information. Everyone on the tour was uneasy at this point.

Before sneaking out, he gave us a strange talk about Fentanyl addiction and made sure everyone on the tour gave donations. Out of the 10 minutes we had to listen to him, he said about 20 words about the actual jail.

All in all, I wish I could get this 10 minutes of my life back and could have just looked around the jail on my own. Beware.

Big History in a small building

Worth the stop if you are in town for JD tour, the caretaker had so many great stories and their is a lot of donated historical items as well as photos of all the sheriffs. A look at real jail life and what our present day jails should be modeled after.
