Graceland is a must do and it is in a nice area but I would use caution if you are headed downtown out of the tourist area. Memphis is not the safest city.

You are safe at the Guesthouse. They have a shuttle to and from the airport and to and from the Graceland plaza across from the Graceland mansion. You are safe on the Graceland plaza grounds. You can’t enter Graceland mansion on your own you have to book a tour and they shuttle you across the street to the mansion and back to the plaza. So they cover you that way. During Elvis week I believe there is a lot more security esp when they do the candlelight vigil. So as long as you stay in that vicinity you are good I heard Beale street is not safe to go on your own. Best to take a tour there and a tour to Tupelo. So you should be good as long as you don’t venture out in Memphis on your own.

Personally, I agree that early Sunday morning would be the best time. Taking a VIP tour would be good, as the staff on the ground is not very well organized and the waiting time in line is ridiculous.

You need at least 3 hours. The buses taking you across to the house and back can be slow especially if you are not on a VIP tour. Really interesting though didn't have time for a drink or something to eat within the 3 hours.

I don't know whether Graceland admits animals, but if so, I hope other members of the tour are given the option of joining another group. My granddaughter was knocked over by a big dog with friendly intentions when she was only three, and since then she has been terrified of them. We also have a family member with a dog allergy, whose throat closes and eyes itch within an hour of exposure. She would be miserable on a tour with a dog, and it's likely that any plans we had for the rest of the day would have to be cancelled. If you do go with your dog in a stroller, be aware that the tour is on two level, the downstairs and the basement, and the stairs are narrow. You will probably need to carry the dog, I suspect a stroller would be difficult to manage.
