I guess I came at good time in that i wasnt charge for parking. Guess I came after the hours of parking charged. There really isnt anything to see right now. Walk over to the Memphis sign and took a picture. Since it winter no features were on. Glad I wasnt charged.

We visited on a rainy day in the summer. It was a little too wet to really be enjoyable, but we did like what we were able to see. There were hardly any other people there in the rain, but it is large and spread out enough that I can't see it being crowded even in nice weather. Would be interesting to visit in nice weather.

A complete and total waste. Their website does not mention that there are renovations going on. The museum is closed. The Mississippi River Model is dry. The grounds aren’t being kept. None of the food vendors are open. For all this, the “paid parking available” that the website mentions is $40. The city of Memphis has no shame, and it shows.

This is completely closed down in complete disrepair. Their parking was $40 on a Saturday, basically ripping off visitors to mud Island. AVOID

Deplorable and neglected would describe this park. It appears to be totally abandoned, there are no staff there to let you in the museum even if you wanted to. The Mississippi River model is all dried out and clogged and even the signs to show you where you are as you walk are unreadable. I am ashamed for the people of Memphis that this is listed among the top attractions to see as a tourist. Giving it one out of five was generous ( you can’t rate a zero).

Mud Island is located in the Mississippi river, offshore from downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The Mud Island Park is a picturesque park and was once accessed by a suspended monorail (a friend paid $10 to ride across 4 years ago) but now the few visitors who want to go there have to use the aerial walkway above the abandoned monorail.

Mud Island offers stunning views of the Mississippi river, neighbouring Arkansas on the other side of the river, the city skyline of Memphis and the unusual Hernando de Soto Bridge.

We visited on the very hot morning of Tuesday August 2nd 2022. We found the pedestrian entrance with ease, having had breakfast in a brilliant coffee shop next to Memphis City Hall. The entrance building had a very domineering feel - all ugly concrete and brutalist - and as we ascended the stairs inside we were soon confronted with the abandoned and dusty monorail train (it clearly hadn’t moved in years!). We had to walk up even higher to access the aerial walkway, but it was worth it for the aforementioned views of Memphis, Arkansas and the Mississippi River.

It took us around 15 minutes to cross and reach a building at the other side. This was presumably the Mississippi River Museum, but it had an abandoned feel, with sections closed off, most of the escalators were turned off and doors were locked. Spookily there was a lonesome and aged janitor cleaning and wiping the doors down. Why? For what purpose? It only added to the creepiness of the visit (as much as he was minding his own business and doing a good, honest job). Consequently we only passed through and spent the rest of our time on Mud Island exploring the outdoor parts of the park.

One of the first things we encountered on Mud Island was the abandoned amphitheatre, a 5000 seat concrete theatre. Many outdoor concerts had taken place here since it opened in 1982 - forty years ago and it showed it! This was a particularly creepy place, as it was open-air and the large metal parts which made up the stage were making creaking noises in the warm breeze. It felt like we shouldn’t be there, but there were no barriers or warning signs. I managed to climb up some groaning metal stairs which took me into the rafters above the stage. My nerves got the better of me when I realised if I fell I’d be doomed! My legs went like jelly and I considered shuffling down the stairs on my backside, carefully and slowly, however I noticed they were covered in dead wasps! I therefore had to walk back down, holding tightly to the swaying railings. Yikes!

Despite the incredible heat we managed to cope with walking down to the southern point of the island and this not only rewarded us with more great views of the Mississippi but meant we could get our photographs taken with the giant MEMPHIS letters with the city skyline behind us. It is here where we finally got to see the other rare visitors on the island.

The island was awash with giant flying insects, which were harmless, particularly near a grubby lake we found. We also got to see the odd dying noisy cicada on the floor, plus a lot of ants. We saw wasps but they never bothered us thankfully.

We looped around the park, following the footpaths and then the impressive scaled model of the Mississippi river (complete with running water still in some places).

The original intention of our visit was for me to kayak on the Mississippi, as I had previously done in 2019 when I kayaked across from River Park on the Memphis side and touched the bank of Mud Island. Sadly the kayaking rentals, which had relocated to Mud Island from the park on the Memphis side awhile ago, wasn’t open, so I disappointingly didn’t get to repeat the experience.

After exploring Mud Island for 90 minutes or so we were very hot and thirsty, so we headed over to Beale Street - back over the aerial walkway, a short walk past City Hall and hopped onto the Main Street Trolley. The Memphis Area Trolley Authority offers rides for only $1 per person (we went for a $2 day pass just in case) so it was a bargain price to save our tired legs after a fascinating morning exploring the unusual Mud Island!

This place COULD be fantastic. It is not. It is an absolute failure of city planning and development. It's clear that A LOT of money went into this at one point, but it's all but abandoned now.

There's a MONORAIL! Abandoned. (Did The Simpsons episode base their monorail boondoggle episode on this? Could be!) This monorail ran just a couple of blocks. Why? Now it actually sits there - partially blocked off, doors still open, graffiti filled. Just awful.

There's the Mississippi River Museum! Closed. The website says it "will reopen in 2022" ... but it's August 2022 and there is no sign of reopening.

Then - the highlight. The scale model of the lower Mississippi. This is such an amazing idea. My wife and I just shook our heads for the entire walk ... how this cool location and cool feature could be utterly empty on a Saturday afternoon. The sclae model was sad - little to no water; stagnant where there was any. Emptying into the massive Gulf of Mexico basin ... also dirty and stagnant looking. Empty booths along the way that could be snack shacks or souvenirs or something. Just dead and abandoned and wasted. Really sad.

We had some time to kill. The reviews and websites suggested this was interesting. It's not.

As a child I remember watching the movie The Firm with Tom Cruise. At the end of the movie, Tom Cruise has to "kill a few hours" and hide from everyone, including the FBI. He chooses to play tourist at Mud Island. I thought this would be a fun tour for the kids, but the park was not operational. You could still walk the bridge and take pictures at the Memphis sign, but the monorail, escalators, and gift shops were not open or working. There were signs everywhere saying they were under renovation and several areas were blocked off for safety.

The grounds did not appear to be kept up and all the areas which held water were dirty. The replica of the Mississippi River was cool, this kids loved seeing it. We were able to take a photo op at the Memphis sign. All in all, a great experience with exercise. There were som pretty flowers and plenty of shade. Too bad there were not any water stations or working vending machines.

Went over to Mud Island Park for what we thought would be a quick, fun photo stop with the Memphis sign. However, the parking is not close to the sign, and the photo op stop became a hot walk. We did pass thru the amphitheater and also enjoyed the to-scale model of the lower Mississippi River. The park was almost deserted on a Wednesday morning around 11am - we only saw one boat owner at the ramp and one family of four at the wade pool. The park definitely could use some maintenance, seems a little neglected.
