Though it is not currently operating, we loved walking through the Mud Island Park. The scale model of the Mississippi was spectacular. I can only imagine how much better it would be if it were actually full of flowing water. We stumbled on the park on an extremely hot day and ran out of drinking water before we made it to the model of the Gulf of Mexico. We were thrilled that the one bubbler we found at the end was working. It was so refreshing after the water ran cold. That bubbler saved us!

It once was a beautiful place, but not anymore. Visited 20 years ago and it was such a wonderful place to visit. It was clean and very educational. You could walk the Mississippi River with towns and bridges located along the Mississippi. You could ride paddle boats in the "Gulf of Mexico". Not anymore. It's just a very sad example of a Democratic run city. Just neglected, run down, and vandalized.

Though it was closed, I got to talk to some workers about the renovations and when it’s opening (2025) and ITS AMAZING!! I can’t wait.

We drove from Illinois with hopes that I would be able to share the experience with my children. When we got there, it was pretty run down and in need of a lot of repair. I was so hurt and disappointed. We did however get a nice photo at the Memphis sign.

Well I am afraid the whole Island is Run down

I hope that the city of Memphis ends up cleaning up and refurbishing this park. A friend who used to love it brought us there. There was lots of information, and I enjoyed seeing it, but it could be a fabulous place! There's so much potential. I could see lots of school aged children learning about one of our most important resources.
I would hope that at the very least, you can get bathrooms operational.

Really nothing to see its in disrepair hopefully one day it'll be back to its full glory. Not what we excepted at all . interesting on the water level display but that's it .Had to pay to park which if it goes to help Mud island that's great. Very rundown

We were staying at the Crowne Plaza hotel on North 2nd Street so it was only a short walk to the access footbridge which is located on Front Street. The bridge to Mud Island is accessed either by stairs or using the lift. You walk across the bridge which is approx 300 metres in length before descending again via stairs or lift onto Mud Island. The views from the bridge were excellent especially of the Mississippi River. There is a replica model of the Mississippi river from its source over its entire length cut into the floor. There is also a river museum and an amphitheatre both of which seemed o be closed when we were there around midday. Have to say the entire area we explored seemed to be abandoned and quite derelict and there were very few people here and no sign of any animals?

I wish I’d looked here before wasting time and money.
We last visited Mud Island in 2007 and remembered it as a nice place so I checked on the tourist website and the official Memphis parks website - nothing to suggest that it was anything other than open.
As others have mentioned the parking charges are really steep - we ended up paying $14 plus tax as we thought we would need more than 2 hours.
The first hint of trouble was the monorail which had clearly been out of use for some time and the homeless people harassing us as we headed for the bridge.
We were shocked when we arrived at the Island to find it utterly derelict. There is absolutely no point in wasting time and money here.
It’s disgraceful that the City isn’t warning people - seems like they are happy to fleece them out of parking fees and don’t care that they likely won’t ever return.

Hi, We will be coming at the end of March 2020. We understand that this is the off season...but are there areas to sit and rest along the Mud Island River park area? My husband can't walk for miles at a time. Just wanting to make sure he can take rests and have an enjoyable time :)

Yes, there are. Maybe you could call ahead and see if anyone could be available with a golf cart to help you? I don’t know if it is possible. It’s a beautiful view and nice river walk.

Where do you park in order to ride the monorail, or to walk across the bridge to get to the island?

We found multiple ways to enter the park. For this visit, we parked in the parking area next to the river and walked directly in. However, we found many that walked across the access covered walkway. It would probably fun to do both, if you are up for a good walk.

It wasn't working while we were there, but it wasn't the busy summer tourist season, either. There were no employees on the grounds, period. But you could walk the bridge over to the island. It was open but unmanned. Creeped us out a little.

Are you able to walk from Bass Pro Shop Pyramid to the park? If not, where can you park? Some will stay at Bass Pro while others wish to see Mud Island. What time does the monorail run and how much is it?
