We were on a quest to visit all 56 TN state parks in 13 months. This was the last park in our list (yay! we did it!). We stayed in a cabin at the park, and we had a marvelous time. The park was beautiful and well-maintained. The cabin was fabulous (nightly raccoon sightings on our cabin deck!). If you like birds, butterflies, and dragonflies, they were everywhere. I wish this park were closer to where we live as we would be frequent visitors. The only "wish" would be hiking trails accessible from the cabin area...or a cut through from the cabin area to the nature-center area.

We chose this park because it was approximately halfway between our home and the residence of my wife’s sister in Texas. Her sister and brother-in-law have a camper, so they wanted to camp. Being less hardy, my wife and I wanted the comfort of a cabin. Meeman-Shelby was one of the few parks near Memphis to offer both.

The biggest problem with this park is that it is BIG and really spread out. The campground is about seven miles away from the cabins. So, whenever we wanted to visit, somebody had to get in the car and drive for 10-15 minutes.

The biggest advantage of this park for us was its proximity to Memphis. It’s a fairly short and easy drive to the heart of the city (which, BTW, is NOT Graceland!!).

The staff, while friendly and as helpful as they maybe could be, could have been more helpful. They were pretty much unable to offer us any information about the area or Memphis and the local attractions. We got more of this kind of information from the local general store than we did from the park staff.

The cabin itself was fairly nice, once you got used to the dog stink. (If you don’t like dog smells, make sure you reserve one of the “No Pets” cabins.) Also, for the best views of the lake you would want to reserve Cabin 2, 3, or 4. We were in Cabin 1, which had a very limited view of the lake. But since we were gone or inside nearly all the time, we didn’t mind much.

Good firm beds, great shower, reasonably comfortable furniture—though not nearly as much furniture in our cabin than are displayed in some of the pictures.

Our only complaint was that the beds did not have fitted bottom sheets, which we thought was strange. That meant that we had to totally remake the bed every morning. (Some people would say that was a good thing…)

You should be aware that there is absolutely NO cell service within the confines of the park. Well, every so often you might get a single bar for a few minutes, but that’s it. No calls, no Internet, you’re pretty much off the grid.

One additional treat during the summer months are the multitudinous hummingbirds that flit about near the entrance to the park office. Dozens of them! They were totally fun and fascinating to watch!

We have been on a trek to visit all 56 state parks in the state of Tennessee. Meeman Shelby Forest State Park was #56! The staff here was incredibly nice. We stayed in Cabin 6 and found it delightful. I am not sure why folks have left negative reviews of the cabins. Are they old? Probably, but it's a cabin that has likely seen a lot of guests. The main area was huge, with a very comfy couch and club chair that were relatively new and well-maintained, a rocking chair, and a separate bench. The kitchen was small, but it wasn't the smallest one we've seen in a state park cabin. It was well-equipped, and we never said, "oh, I wish they had this thing here." Each cabin has a view of the water, except, maybe, cabin #1, and from walking around, it looked like each cabin had a small path to the water for fishermen and fisherwomen. The park is close to The Shelby Forest General Store, if you want to grab a quick bite or need to pick up ice or snacks, and about 10 - 12 miles from Kroger or Walmart, if you need more. There is no wifi in this cabin, but there is a TV, and we had a hoot of a time watching the old reruns of Hazel, Dennis the Menace, and others (channels are limited, but are family-friendly). We were able to get limited cell service in one corner of the cabin, but the whole point of getting away is getting away (including unplugging from email, phone calls, and internet).

If you like birdwatching, butterfly spotting, dragonfly spotting, then this is definitely a park for you! We saw so many birds, butterflies, and different types of dragonflies!

My only wishlist item would have been a walking trail that originated from the cabins. Like Reelfoot , Harpeth River , and a few other state parks, one must drive to the trailheads.

The only downside was that we went in July, during a heat wave. The heat index was over 100. But, we hiked early in the morning, and enjoyed the great airconditioner in the cabin and the retro TV (and board games) the rest of the day. We enjoyed raccoon spotting in the late afternoons from the generously-sized deck in cabin 6.

We had a delightful time. I wish this park were closer to where we live.

Beautiful park with good walking trails. Some climbing steep hills on the trails. The campground has electricity and water at campsites. Perfect getaway for a family.

I recently stayed in one of the park cabins (Cabin #6), and it was a disappointing experience. The furniture in the cabin was old and uncomfortable, there were some obvious maintenance issues (e.g., a toilet that kept running, no working overhead light in the kitchen), and the kitchen was very poorly equipped. The kitchen, in fact, had a grand total of one bowl in it. (One bowl? Really?)

I realize that this is a cabin in a state park and not a five-star hotel in the middle of a large city, but for the amount of money that this cost, it's not acceptable. I would not consider staying there again.

Nice trails. I couldn’t follow the Bluff trail as I lost the marker when it got very thick. The Woodland trail is very hilly, but it is still very enjoyable. It was a little crowded on a Saturday morning, but during the week it was fairly empty and quiet. All together an enjoyable area.

We went RV camping this past week and I have to point out a few items many campers/ Rvers need to know. The spots are very shaded (good) but they are very poorly maintained. The shower rooms are totally disgusting and old. There is ZERO wifi or phone reception in the park. The rangers and lady checking us in were were friendly.

I spent about an hour looking over your web site . Then I decided just go drive to this park and check it out for myself. I was walking toward the office location from my car. I did have my dog on leash. As I approached the door a young man in uniform held the door open for me. I hesitated and asked first if it was ok to enter with my dog. He admitted he didn’t know. He called to the woman at the desk from the door way she replied No that unless my dog was a service dog I could not bring her in. I’m totally ok with that...that’s why I asked before hand. I do not leave my dog unattended in an auto.
. However no one bothered to ask me if they could help me, I obviously needed some information from the management or else I wouldn’t have driven to this park, parked vehicle and walked to doorway...
Poor customer service, I won’t be back to rent a cabin, camp site , or walk a trail.

We stayed in Cabin #5 for 3 nights. Cabin #1 and #5 are the pet friendly cabins. I would choose #5 if needing pet friendly due to better lake view. All 5 cabins are in the same area, though, and all appear to be "equal".

Thank you Tennessee for providing pet friendly accommodations in your parks! We live in Texas and our state parks do not allow dogs in their cabins. Therefore, we take our tourism dollars elsewhere. Chuckie thoroughly enjoyed his stay! There is a $20/nt pet fee.

The park has 20 miles of trails. The trails are average when it comes to markings along the trails themselves. The maps they provided were TERRIBLE!!! The maps were so small you couldn't read what they said, they were not accurate, etc..... The park itself was confusing to navigate. Twice we had someone stop us and ask for directions of how to get to the cabin section. The written instructions provided to get to the cabins need to be improved.

MOSQUITOS! Be sure to bring your bug spray. That's all I will say about that!!!

The cabins are at the very back of the park. It's not a quick trip to the Visitor Center! There is also no park wifi or cell service at the cabins unfortunately. Most of our travels are "workcations" for me so having at least cell service is important. There is free wifi 24/7 at the Visitors Center, but you won't just hop on your bike and ride to the visitor center! :) The cabins are that deep in the park and the hills are that great!

We brought our bikes and did ride one day. However, I'd be lying if I didn't say we also pushed our bikes up several hills and we are in good shape (marathon runners). Kids will easily be able to ride their bikes around the cabin area, but riding through the park will probably only be for the more skilled. There is a paved bike trail in the park. The map says 5 miles, but the Visitor Center said oh no now it's only maybe 2 miles due to erosion.

The trails themselves are what I would call "easy moderate". Most are certainly not flat, but nothing you can't tackle. Our dog is 16+ and he did a good job with navigating them.

We hiked the horse trails which are approx 8 miles. Would be a good venue for horses!

Given the location of the park AND how deep in to the park your cabin is located I would recommend you come with all food supplies you want/need for your stay. There's no quick trip to a local grocery store or Walmart! The cabin had a full kitchen and fairly well stocked kitchen for cooking.

The cabins themselves are "camping cabins". These are NOT "glamping" cabins. They are very equivalent to other cabins we've stayed at in other state parks. We loved the deck on the back with our view of the lake. This was our favorite part of the cabin.

The cabin information says all cabin rentals come with a John Boat. When we inquired at the Visitor Center about this they said oh we don't do that anymore. They do have John Boats, kayaks, etc for rent but are closed Mon and Tues. We stayed Sun nt - Wed. Wed was our only option for water rentals and it rained.

Cabin #5 is a 2b/1 bath with a pull out couch. When you sat on the couch, though, it completely sank in with the cushions below the base of the couch. The couch probably is due for replacing. The bed was HARD! The pillows even harder. The bathroom had HOT water and plenty of it! Not always common in these types of cabins. They are very spacious cabins and plenty of room for 4-6 people.

We love staying at cabins in state parks during our travels. It makes visiting the parks themselves more enjoyable. No need to pack picnic meals to drag in. Return to the cabin for each meal. Someone gets tired? Return them to the cabin and back out the rest of the group goes. Whether turns bad? Return to the cabin and wait it out. You get the picture! Great way to travel!

My only "complaint"....we checked out a day early as storms were moving in. We understood we would still be responsible for the cabin rental for that night. Fair enough. However, did not feel it was fair they still charged us the pet fee for that night. The $20 pet fee for the night we forfeited should have not been charged.

Every park and every cabin we stay at has their own "flavor" and we love and appreciate all of them for what they are!

We rented the entire Piersol Group Camp for a wedding last year. It included the four bunkhouses (which is where we housed our wedding party and our out of town guests) and the large dining hall (that we transformed into our reception hall). The wedding ceremony was outside on the grounds surrounded by nature. It was a great location, the wedding and reception turned out beautiful, and we saved thousands of dollars compared to just about any other wedding venue around! They are making major renovations to the group camp and the park from what I was told by the park ranger so it will be even better!! Highly recommend!!!!!
