The gardens are spectacular and beautifully maintained. Well done to the garden team. The garden is by far the best bit.
The peacocks are friendly.
The shuttle bus (summer only I think) is very helpful as the gardens are steep.
The castle inside is dreary and dark. Lots of stairs too. Windows all shaded so views hidden as well. Jobs worth style staff enforce a tedious one way system
The catering is absolutely dire at the castle. 25 minute queue for a cup of coffee on 13/9/24 and very little choice of food: typical tired National Trust bought in rubbish

We can primarily to see the fabulous castle gardens, and they were spectacular. Some unusual plants, luckily with name plates for us curious gardeners, wonderful views, all beautifully tended. The castle itself was a very different story. It is currently part way through the long process of having over 100 rooms re wired, with the result that many rooms have their displays disrupted, carpets removed etc, but most noticeably they are not being cleaned. Pictures and furniture were thick with dust and obviously this created a mustiness and dinginess in the house. Helpful guides, though, who were very knowledgeable and apologetic. Maybe wait till the work is over before visiting?

Dog friendly NOT, visited today with our two whippets only to be advised can just take dogs into the courtyard despite advertising it is, it's NOT.

Went last September with my family and dog. Today dogs are no longer let in during the summer. Irony is last Sept was five times as busy as today! Wasted our time and money as they are unable to put up notices in their entry shed. Wonder why…

Been meaning to visit for years and eventually managed it. What an awesome place it is with such extensive grounds. Good to see so many young people and families visiting. The castle itself is full of treasures and quite fascinating. The gardens are a delight and so colourful at this time of the year. There is plenty of walking involved in getting around the property. There are also a large number of steps, some of which are quite wide and steep. It would have been helpful to have more hand rails as currently the steps are not ideal for people who are mobility impaired. We welcomed the opportunity to catch a ride back to the car park on the National Trust mini bus!

Castle steeped in history and stuffed with treasures. Many rooms to visit inside the castle with artwork and many lavish artifacts. Really is a spectacle and the staff are full of information.
The gardens are extensive.
Very large free carpark. Toilets onsite. Cafe, bookshop, giftshop.
Free to NT members.

An iconic "must see" venue on the England Wales border near Welshpool... beautiful extensive gardens to explore and plenty to see inside the castle itself with a wealth of history to uncover. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers are on hand to deal with any queries! Can get very busy but easily enough space to keep everyone happy!

We were holidaying in the Area, and staying in Llanfyllin. A visit to the Castle and Gardens, was on our, "To Do" List, and we were delighted to be able to fulfil our wish to visit. We visited during the recent Hot Weather (25 Degrees plus, on our particular Day)
We found the Castle and Gardens easily, from the centre of Welshpool, and once in the Grounds, and at the Top of the Long Driveway, one of the Volunteers showed us to a Car Parking Space, on an Area of Ground by the Ticket Office.
We're National Trust Members, but Non-Members can expect to pay £40+, for a Family Ticket. We found the Free Site Map, given to us at the Ticket Office, really informative, and enabled us to navigate our way around.
It's a Steep Walk, from the Car Park to the Castle, and from the Gardens to the Car Park. Thankfully there is a Shuttle Bus Service, which runs to/from these Areas, at regular intervals, and is suitable for Visitors with either, Mobility Challenges, or who are tired after a Day of exploring.
Our Son has Additional Needs, and requires the use of a Wheelchair for long distances. As one would expect, with Structures of this Age, there are no Wheelchair-Friendly Entrances/Exits to the Castle and although we did manage to get him inside, we had to abandon it on the Lower Level, as despite his best attempts, he just couldn't manage the Stairs to the Upper Level. Sadly at this juncture, we had to contend with members of, "The Straw-Hatted Purple Rinse Brigade","Huffing and Puffing", and, "Tutting", as our Son's attempt to climb the Stairs, was delaying their access to the Upper Level.
The Stifling Heat inside the Castle started to affect my Wife, and she very nearly fainted. Huge thanks to Alison, one of the Volunteers responsible for being the Emergency First Aid Responder, who came and helped us until my Wife had sufficiently recovered. Alison then found us a Table inside the Cafe, where it was nice and cool, although, "cosy". We all had Cold Drinks, our Children had Crisps, and my Wife and I, each had a delicious slice of Bara Brith.
The Shop sells National Trust Food/Drink items, various items of Apparel, and Cuddly Toys (our Children bought one each). A lovely Surprise, was the presence of an Old Bookshop, in the back of the Shop (sadly, our search for a Copy of, "The Mabinogian", continues!).
The Gardens were stunning, and there thankfully, is a designated route, for Wheelchair Users and Buggys,which takes you down to the Main Lawn, where a variety of Family Games are available to play. There are several Seating Benches dotted around the Lawn Area, under the Trees.
There is another Cafe, just past the Lawn Area, which also doubles as the Pick-up point for the Shuttle Bus Return Journey. This Cafe, however, only accepts Cards (or it did when we visited).
All in all, an eventful Day, but one we all enjoyed. We would have no hesitation in recommending Powys Castle and Gardens, as a Place to Visit, and hope to do so ourselves, at some point.

I visited the gardens and it was gorgeous! The flowers were beautiful and I had the opportunity to see peacocks and a few baby peacocks! Unfortunately, the house was already closed by the time I had arrived, and the gardens may be big but can be easily covered within an hour, so not much more to do after that.

surprisingly, any time when the property is open but only the 1st member on a joint RHS membership. Search 'powis castle RHS membership' and you'll get the appropriate webpage.

by car: M1 or M40 to M6, then to M54 and A5, then A458 to Welshpool. Allow at least 5 hours from London or 4 from the bottom of the M1. By train: Welshpool station is about 25 mins walk from the castle, when you leave the station go through the Tesco car park (opposite side of the roundabout) and into the town, go up the high street and there are gates on the left, from there it is a mile to the castle. Bear in mind opening times. In no way is this a day trip from London!

My husband has difficulty walking. Do you have disabled parking /transport or can I drive up to the castle and drop him off and return to the car parking?

Don't bother going if you also want to see inside the castle. My friend is in a wheelchair. The transport from car park to entrance is good and there is a disabled toilet but the 13 steps to be climbed to get into the first floor of the castle means it is NOT accessible to those who are wheelchair bound. We were given an iPad to loo at which had some photos of the interior but no accompanying information. My friend spent two hours sat in the café accompanied by one of us. My advice would be to look elsewhere

only in the winter season. Keep an eye on the castle website for exact dates. Dogs will need to be on short leads and cleaning up after them is of course expected.

I am afraid the new management of the NT are becoming more and more focused on revenue raising. No interest now in the less well off family wanting to let the kids burn off energy in the gardens. The gardens were a delight to pop round at different times of the year too. And the food prices are ruinous now. £2 for a paper cup of tea. £5.25 for an egg roll. So NT is now for the well healed only.
