I suggest visiting the "Old Cemetery" Basically anything north of the old mortuary station. This is where many of the grand and historically significant monuments are located. The newer sections are very modern however show the shear scale of death. I caught the train from central to Lidcomb and accessed the cemetery via the North western gate. I suggest bringing a backpack with water, lunch and a camera. Be careful there is heavy traffic on the main road with no footpaths and cars travelling at 70km/h. I will be visiting again, Hopefully alive.

If visiting the Old part of the Anglican cemetery Wear boots that cover the ankles and gators, The grass is long and wet earlier in the morning. BRING A COMPASS!

Large Necropolis in Sydney. Some sections are very old and historic.
The cemetery is divided into sections by religion.

There is also a war cemetery for those go gave their lives so that we may live.

There are two entrances. The entrance off Roberts Road has a flower shop and a coffee restaurant.

The cemetery is beautifully maintained and organised very well. They have an outstanding website with an up-to-date search page which helps you to find the grave of your loved ones.

What we did not like was that learner drivers use the cemetery roadways to practice their driving.

An amazing cemetery full of history. A truly huge place and worth several visits. The sculpture exhibition is also worth a visit when it pops up in September/October.

Rookwood is unique for Sydney because it's the biggest and packs in so many cultures. It's one of the most unpleasant cemeteries I've been to though - roads all through it with hardly any footpaths and cars driving through at crazy speeds, plus lots of noisy construction vehicles. What almost redeems it is the old overgrown section in the north, great for exploring and looking for old Sydney figures, however, this section is noisy from the marshalling yards.

Having numerous ancestors interned at Rookwood, we finally made our pilgrimage. We need to go back as the vastness of the place was beyond us on a hot day. We went on a Sunday and as a result could not locate any staff which of course is understandable. We managed some of the Catholic & Jewish precincts in the four hours we spent there. Anyway what we did see and discover did not disappoint and we have put Rookwood back on our bucket list for quite a few visits to come.
Only gripe we have is that some of the OLD areas require a bit of overdue care.

Rookwood is an amazing place full of interesting historical and cultural details. The staff at the two offices we visited were very helpful in our search for the final resting place of long gone ancestors. A genealogists dream come true.

I’ve been coming here for years to visit relatives & friends now passed. Despite the sadness that this can obviously bring, I’m proud that my home city of Sydney has a cemetery as well maintained, as huge & as natural garden & tree-wise etc as Rookwood. There’s even an annual sculpture exhibition here every September called ‘Hidden’. Thank you to everyone involved that keeps Rookwood the peaceful & beautiful place it is to visit.

Went there for a cremation, they made it a pleasant occasion and made family and friends feel relaxed and comfortable. Nice place to visit but wouldn’t want to stay there!

Rookwood Cemetery has existed since the 1860s. It is a huge place and it would have to be! We have some family members resting there, so we have visited on many occasions. It is the final resting place for many, irrespective of creed or religion. It has some nice gardens and it seems to be quite well organised with streets and street names, so visitors will not get lost. However, as it is such a vst place, it is very easy to lose your way, and we have on several occasions! You can also buy flowers from the resident flower sellers, whenever they are at their spot, usually on Sundays. Quite interestingly we have seen people having picnics on some occasions! Visit when you have to!
