Nepean national park was fantastic with its rolling terrain and scenic skyline. Beautiful views left unforgettable images in the memory. There were so many tracks to tread on and to cover all, I may have to do several more visits. Great place to visit!

The park is nice, it has lots of history/buildings/quarantine stations.. For me, it wasn’t worth the detour. I like wild national parks and this one constantly reminded me of civilization…

Point Nepean was formerly a quarantine station that could only be accessed by officials with appropriate authorization. It is now a national park. Point Nepean is best known for its close relationship to Cheviot Beach. Prime Minister Harold Holt, who was a keen spear fisherman, was lost at sea sat Cheviot Beach. Cheviot Beach is regarded as one of Australia's most treacherous beaches. Holt's remains were never recovered, despite an extensive search.

Over the years have been to Portsea many times but have never gone further into the Park, it was closed to the public years ago so never bothered with it but after finding out it is indeed open to the public we ventured forth.
Great place , we discovered many things we never knew were there.
First stop was the very interesting Quarantine Station, a real eye opener especially with what we have been going through with the Covid Pandemic.
From there we drove to Gunners Cottage, that is as far as you can go by car.
We then walked to the point in quite blustery conditions, I imagine it is like that out there a lot of the time .
It was a great walk of nearly 8 kilometres return, great ocean views and plenty of old military buildings/ gun placements to discover as well as the memorial to Harold Holt who while Prime Minister disappeared while swimming out here .
So it is a great place to visit with lots of history to discover and nature to enjoy .
For those that don’t want to walk there is a paid shuttle bus service that goes from the Quarantine Station on a regular basis

This National Park has reopened after the temporary closure during the various Covid-19 lockdowns.

My wife and I visited this place for the first time, even though we have been to Mornington Peninsula around 10 times over the years. We have been to all the other various highlights in the Peninsula except for this Park, for no particular reason.

This National Park is very interesting as there are many attractions within the Park. We visited all of these:

1. The Quarantine Station which has historical significance and heritage listed buildings.
2. Gunners Cottage, where there are car parking facilities for visitors as this is where the road ends for entry to Fort Nepean.
3. Fort Pearce
4. Eagles Nest
5. Pearce Barracks
6. Fort Nepean (the main highlight)

We had a lovely time exploring the quarantine station and local beaches. We then caught the bus up to the headlands. Views amazing and coastline a treat. Gunnery amazing. Beware- we met a large tiger snake on one of the paths- apparently there is a lot of them. And sand flys were biting well. You need water and good walking shoes.

Entry to this National Park is free, but the shuttle bus is quite expensive at $13 each. So, just walk around the park - it is not long from start to the Fort at the end along a well formed track (around 2.5 kms to 3.8 kms depending on which route you take), with plenty of great diversions on the way.

The views along the way are awesome - at Harold Holt's memorial and at the Point Nepean where the entry to Port Phillip Bay is very narrow. You can clearly see Queenscliff at the other side of Port Phillip Bay and even up to Melbourne City (which must be around 100 kms away). This is a great place to get good photos, but aim to set aside several hours (don't rush it!).

Ok so we all know what it’s like to motivate a teenager to walk.. a bit of grumbling on the way but when we reached the tunnels at the end kids were amazed.. waking through the tunnels with the sound system scaring them all, lots of running and happy sounds. They were very interested in all the workings of the gunning rooms and how they were protecting our country.. ok so 2 of them may have caught the shuttle back.. but worth the walk.

It’s a must to visit! The quarantine station is so interesting, maybe more so now we are living through CoVid19 times, Cheviot Beach (where Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared), Fort Nepean and the wonderful hills, fauna, flora, bird life, ocean and bay views. No dogs allowed (not even in your car) so leave your best furry friend at home. Take a picnic and spend the day, well worth visiting. Plenty of parking.

Had a very nice walk with heaps of history to take in and beautiful views and vantage points overlooking magnificent coloured waters. Well maintained tracks and roads, plenty of information signs. Just kept doing a fly dance as the biting flies kept finding any available skin to land and bite. Nice day though, just take fly repellent.
