Well worth the effort. An undulating walk and some level of fitness is handy. We only walked a part of it and found it well marked and easy to follow. Some very good views of bass strait.

Amazing views, lots of picture opportunities. Some hills, tree roots, climbing, flat paths. It's a long walk 7km one way. Well worth doing, would be enjoyable with a friend.

After a good lunch at the Kilcunda General Store we went for a nice walk on this coastal walk. It is a good maintained track with stunning views out over the coastline.
Lovely to walk through the coastal bush that opened up now and then to give lovely views over the ocean and the rock formations and sandy beaches.
When we are in the area next we will do the complete wall from Kilcunda to San Remo. Looking forward to it

The George Bass Coastal Walk will take you along the breathtaking cliff-top from San Remo to Kilcunda. The Bass Coast is a uniquely beautiful seascape.. The trek has a few ups and down but it is not too arduous. The return trip takes around 5 hours, it's around 17 km (10 miles) for the return trip. You can stop off for refreshments at Kilcunda before you embark on the return trip.

This walk took about 2 hours. I’d say 90 minutes of walking and 30 minutes of admiring the views. If you are not regular walkers you will probably need 120 of walking. We are quite fit!
The only trouble is how to get there etc. of course the best was is if you have 2 cars so you can car shuffle. Park at Kilkunda and then car shuffle back. Otherwise you probably have to rely on an irregular taxi service.
Luckily for us, we had procured the services of Posh Penguins to take us on a 2 day tour of the island. We choose an extra day as we wanted to include some walks - such as this one. They knew the island and the walks well. In fact they even knew that it is better to start the walk at kilkunda and walk west in the early morning, so you won’t have the sun of your face. Such a g, but it made all the difference on our walk. They also gave us some fly repellant - which you will need on a hot day I can tell you!!!
Fantastic walk. Recommend doing it, however you end up here!

My wife and I visited this place to go hiking on the coastal walk en-route to Phillip Island for a holiday.
The unsealed road leading to this place, from the main road is a negative bone jarring feature when driving.
The coastal walk is very scenic and we enjoyed the views and the physical exercise.

This has to be one of Australia's great coastal walks - a relatively easy 16 kms return from Kilcunda to Punchbowl that provides views of beautiful beaches, rocky headlands and unique rock structures.
It can be very windy in this area, so be prepared. We did it on a 23 degrees spring day, but I imagine it may be too cold in winter unless you're rugged up. Even on the fine day we did the walk, it was still cold because of the southerly wind chill.
There are some steep parts and some beach walking, but anyone with a reasonable level of fitness should be OK. I would thoroughly recommend this walk ... it is just so spectacular and varied.

We parked at the southern end of Punchbowl Rd in San Remo, all the cars including ours were parked on the side of the road. Beautiful views started immediately. We walked to Punchbowl Coastal Reserve (marker 9) and back- it took 2.5hrs.. I blame it on my poor lockdown fitness and pregnant body, plus wearing hiking shoes that I haven't taken on a long hike before! Was only planning to allocate 1.5hrs previously! The track is popular both directions but not so busy that you don't have it to yourself for several minutes or more. Several options to access the beaches (just not for swimming/wading as waters are too rough and unpatrolled). I recommend a hat, sunblock, hiking shoes, water/ light snack as there are lots of exposed sections. Lots of steep sections too and gravel/sandy parts. One section was hard to follow with a lack of a marker but we managed to find it. Beautiful fresh air. Saw lots of people taking their dogs and kids (older kids are better).

Our motel dropped us off at the bottom of Punchbowl Road and we walked the 8kms to Kilcunda. This was unbelievably wonderful and photogenic walk, with beauty around every corner. The coast line here is spectacular as are the beaches and coves. We are in our mid-50s and whilst there were a few ups and downs, we took our time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend.

Fresh, inviting and wow! The grass highway that highlights the folding ribbon coastline is just so postcard quality! Walking that 8 km stretch from Punch Bowl to Kilcunda is my favourite of all times! The Blow Holes add to the excitement of that walk. Make sure you wear comfortable hiking shoes as the uneven slope can easily roll the ankle. For the young and looking for challenge, try the return journey, stopping by the beaches to watch the thunderous blow holes is so rejuvenating! I hope you enjoy as much as I do! The cycling along the Bass Coast Rail Trail is fantastic as well on the well marked good quality lilydale topping.

We did the walk on a Thursday , it was not busy at all, Only met a couple of people so a great time to do it .
Call into the Kilcunda General Store for a feed while doing the walk , good place for a pleasant break .
Enjoy. Cheers Roy

Thx for the review. Is there anywhere to get drinking water along the way? Only toilets are at kilcunda?

When did it open to the public, did it start from San Remo or Kilkunda
Who came up with the idea, many thanks

Hello Jackie,
My earliest leaflet from Parks Victoria on the George Bass Coastal walk is dated January 2000. They would be able to answer any of your questions regarding this. You will need to look up their website as Trip Advisor forbids me supplying a link. Their phone is 13 1963
The walk commences at the southern end of Punchbowl Rd, off the Phillip Island Tourist Rd at San Remo and finishes at Kilcunda. It is 7 kilometres in length and takes about 2 hours one way. It follows the route taken by George Bass in 1797 in a 8.7 metre whale boat to explore the souther mainland.
Parks Victoria are often up-grading and maintaining this walk
Kind Regards Charles
