Lovely country drive up to Powers lookout, looking down into the beautifully green valley, well worth a drive, not far from Whitfield

We noticed the sign to a lookout and decided to head out. The road was just being graded so it was nice and smooth.
There is a lovely hut which is a picnic shed and an amenities building. It is only a very short walk to the lookout over the beautiful King Valley and the Alpine National Park.
In the past it was home for the notorious but ‘gentleman’ bush ranger Power. What a perfect place for a hideout.

Definitely worth it. You need to travel along an unsealed road for 5 minutes but it is fine in any car. Just don’t go too fast and not quite enough room in places for 2 cars. You might see wallabies at certain times. Normally late afternoon.

Also......big tip here.....the first viewing platform is great, but make sure you walk down the steps and five minutes later you will find yourself at an even better lookout.

The views of the King Valley from the Powers look out were great and well worth the visit. There are two points to view and be sure to go the 200 Mtres to the one with the rocks (despite the climb down and up) as it is well worth the effort. Harry Powers was a notorious bushranger who lived in these parts and even trained Ned Kelly and had a gantastic look-out named after him--somewhwat ironic but interesting.

The road to Powers Lookout(s) is unsealed but in good condition. It starts from the Mansfield-Whitfield Road and is well signposted. It ends at a car park with an information board and toilets. There is an excellent lookout there, with steel safety fence and grating. The information board has information about Powers, who was a bushranger, and Ned Kelly who also operated in this area. Unfortunately it had been defaced, so we were not aware that the main lookout is on a large rocky outcrop, some 10 minutes walk to the North along a narrow track. Wedgetail eagles frequent the area and are often seen soaring in the air currents along the face of the escarpment.
The VicRoads atlas and various GPS maps, all show a road from Powers Lookout descending into the valley and joining the King Valley Road at Cheshunt South. We could find no such public road. We were subsequently told that the "road" depicted, is a private track beneath the electricity power transmission lines where they descend into and across the valley. It is there purely to enable the electricity company contractors to access the various huge pylons, with their 4WD vehicles. The 4WD track down ito the valley is extremely steep and ends at a locked gate at the lower end. It should not be attempted by unauthorised vehicles.
The view from the Lookouts is very well worth the drive in.

Beautiful winters day with full sunshine. Took a picnic lunch to have after a walk to both lookouts and Power’s Waterhole. Interesting history story and well signed. The furthest lookout and waterhole track are a little more challenging but well worth the effort!

We stopped in here on the way through to Mansfield from Whitfield. The gravel road is really good quality and the drive easy. There are two lookout points available from very short walks - both have incredible views on a clear day right along the valley. The further lookout requires you to navigate some steep but well-made stairs, but the view is well worth a little effort. Great little story about bushranger Harry Powers too. Highly recommend stopping off if you’re in the area.

We walked down the track to the lookout and were surprised at the views. The walk itself was not strenuous but had steps and some steep bits. The valley is beautiful. The information about the bushranger was excellent at the start of the walk. I am so pleased we took the time to do this.
