While in Kilcunda enjoying the beach and lunch we walked some of the rail trail towards Wonthaggi.
Lovely to walk along where the old steam trains used to travel years ago.
Quite historic, opened about 1910 to bring coal from this area to Melbourne, it also became a passenger service and closed about 1978.
Would like to do a bike ride here

Stayed again at Kilcunda caravan park and decided to walk towards Anderson this time as I had already walked to Wonthaggi and back several times. As it was such a good walk kept going all the way to Woolamai race course then back. Over 20kms of easy walking.

An easy relaxing bicyle ride about 35 KM round trip. Stop at Kilcunda for a beer and burger and lots of wonder photo opportunities along the way

Interesting short trail with lots of variety, including coastal views, old mine workings, bushland and farms.We rode the full length from Wonthaggi to Woolamai (32km return). Most of last section from Anderson to Woolamai was dead straight and through farmland, ending abruptly at the racetrack (good luck extending it there).
The southerley breezes kept us cool and the Kilcunda cafe was a quirky treat.

The Wonthaggi Rail Trail is a long-standing, easily accessible, free recreational track that can lead to a great fun filled day or relaxing ride/walk through the woodlands.
If like me you seek adventurous activities or just want to distract the kids while you talk to Sharon from Pilates and whine about the younger days, this one is for you.
Geocaching apps are great real-life treasure maps that keep kids (and adults) contained for hours with clues and riddles to find hidden treasures. Pokémon Go can also be used here but I don’t know; just like the little compost bins given to us by the council I think it’s mention is ‘just the thought that counts’.

We rode the Trail from Anderson (Phillip Island turn-off) to Wonthaggi. The trail is a good firm gravel surface all the way apart from the last Km or so into Wonthaggi which is bitumen. The highlight was the view from the trestle bridge over the Powlett River at its mouth along the beachfront at Kilcunda (make sure you pack your camera or phone). I can recommend Beand at Wonthaggi & The General Store at Kilcunda for coffee & eats to make certain of a 34 Kms round trip. This is a ride that is well worth the drive to the parking area at Anderson.
