1st- many of the photos posted here are of Buffalo Bayou Park along with Herman Park and its not understood why someone would post these. 2nd- it is a very good park but doesn't rate as being excellent. Anytime you have a golf course in the middle of a park , you are taking away a huge amount of park space and dedicating that to a specific clientele and that, kind of, defines the park. Memorial Park divides itself, segments itself and doesnt really flow, like Herman Park even though Herman has a golf course also . Memorial has a nice , but unimpressive, picnic, biking area, with hidden, undisclosed trails, the trails being unmarked and underused and prohibited for entry however the official trail system, which is shared with bikers and...get this...mountain bikers....who have used and abused whatever natural beauty and limited topographical diversity in the watershed , hilly , ravine areas exists, is available for official hiking use. This official trail area is either somewhat boring, with flat, winding trails of trees and dense undergrowth or is then unwalkable with the ravines, which are muddy, carved out elevations that are hard to climb or walk thru because of the abuse of the land by allowing mountain bikers to do their thing. But I digress. The most attractive part of the park is called The Eastern Glades, which is a very beautiful area surrounding a small lake or large pond. This is the topographical area that the park needs more of but doesnt have. There is the running\ jogging peripheral trail\ circuit which is 3? Miles long, the Arboretum, a nicer more diverse walking area, however with an entry fee, tennis courts, a new volleyball area, new softball, baseball fields, a public pool and a new area calledThe Landbridge which connects the southern part of the park to the northern because of Memorial Park Dr dividing the park. The landbridge, which is composed of 2 tunnels, covered and landscaped with dirt, grass and concrete paths is impressive and , on the southern side, creates a retention pond area , however, ....and you knew this was coming....there is an incredible lack of trees... lack or absence of a water element in order to create a meadow environment , something that a park doesnt really need in a hot climate like Houston. So...in the summer, or anytime the temperature is over 77 degrees one will sweat profusely and or burn quite rapidly and uncomfortably on or near the landbridge meadow.... You have been warned. They could have left the trees, surrounding that retention pond, which is usually dry and quite boring, and created another beautiful lake\ pond area but they didn't. The Arboretum has small meadows for diversity but the landbridge meadow is just too much . There is also a large, pristine area of the park, across from the golf course on the northwest side of the park which shoulda, coulda been tapped for a beautiful botanical garden than could have been connected to the arboretum using a footbridge however this mysteriously unutilized area has remained unused and, for those more adventurous, with time on their hands, can be explored by the unofficial trails and hilly areas. However , the area, to me, is too isolated. There are plans for this area in the future so it remains to be seen. Memorial Park is a good park, especially if you have a singular purpose in mind for its use but it doesnt...quite... measure up to what a great, grand park should be like compared to Houston's Herman Park or a Central Park in ( expletive) NYC.

Extremely nice park in Houston, lots of trails to walk around and a lake. There are some parking areas but they get filled up quickly. Nice to go for a stroll around though or take the dog for a walk. You also have the Japanese Garden and the Zoo nearby.

What a great urban oasis in the middle of Houston. Lots of walking and running trails. Area felt very safe, even in the early morning hours as there are literally plenty of other park users.

Very nice family park full of green spaces and beautiful trees, just so big that you can’t see everything in one day. The most popular trail is the 3 mile gravel loop. The park is full with walkers, joggers, and runners. There is also a beautiful pedestrian bridge that allows you to conveniently avoid the Memorial Drive traffic. The park is receiving some wonderful improvements and there is construction. We had fun rediscovering the picnic loop. Lots of kids and dogs enjoying the open space. If you want to go on a little nature adventure there are also miles of wooded trails that are clearly marked. Not sure if there was kayaking, but the park did have public tennis courts and golf course

This location is a must for any runners visiting Houston and wants to be amongst other runners. It's a gravel trail loop that can be accessed from Buffalo Bayou trails.

Went here on a Wednesday so it was rather quiet overall. The parking is not free along the park so ensure you pay via the app or at the machine to avoid getting a ticket.

Total time to walk around the entirety of the park is 2 hours when you factor in stopping to take pictures, enjoy the views, etc...

Wow! We were so pleasantly surprised today by the newly renovated area of Memorial park.

We had initially intended to visit the Arboretum area, but decided to grab a bite to eat. Then we were looking for a picnic table and caught a glimpse of this newer section of the park.

“ Eastern Glades: 100 acres of formerly inaccessible parkland transformed into a natural environment, complete with trails and boardwalks that wind through wetlands to a 5-acre lake.”

There was a section nearby with parking, picnic tables and clean restrooms.

After lunch we walked on the trails along this new area. Really pretty on this sunny and warm (in the 70s) winter day!

I used to live in Houston and was more of a frequent visitor to the park. I now live out in Sugar Land. If these improvements are any indication of things to come for Memorial Park, we will make a point to return many times in the future.
