We went with family and had a good time. It has good information about the island and a few fun activities for kids. We enjoyed the walking trail too.

Closed but ARK center is a must visit

The main center is still under repair. Attached to it is the Amos Rehabilitation Keep or ARK which rescues and rehabilitates turtles, owls, and shorebirds. They offer a twice weekly guided tour which is amazing. Educational and inspiring- the volunteers who run it very experienced, knowledgeable, and truly passionate about their work with the animals. Not to be missed !

Kent Ullberg’s statue in front is worth going here

We did not go inside because it was not open when we were there. But the main reason for our stop was to see Kent Ullberg’s sculpture “Interdependency”. At first glance you just see a tarpon, impressive enough. The tarpon is the symbol for the town of Port Arkansas. But look closer and you will see within the body of the tarpon a variety of different marine life. There are several other fish, several birds, a sand dollar and a crab. The habitats of all are interdependent, and the life of one species depends upon the other. Thus the sculpture is named “Interdependency.” If you go to the Corpus Christi bayfront you can find several of Ullberg’s sculptures, as well as In Rockport

Worth a stop to see the sculpture

Stopped by here after a local resident recommended seeing the sculpture outside the Patton Marine Science Education Center. Unfortunately, the building’s still closed after Hurricane Harvey but the statue is really pretty impressive. The closer you walk up to it the more you see the individual parts, all done in bronze.

Closed so we couldn't visit

Be sure and check their website because they are still closed and recovering from Hurricane Harvey. But, previous visits were fun and informative. Sorry the grandson didn't get to see it this trip.

SEA TURTLES !!

2018年8月

Although the Center was still closed due to damage from last year's Hurricane Harvey, the walk along the seawall (also severely damaged at the same time) from the Center to the jetty treats the whole family with dozens of sea turtles along the water at the jetty's base. We even came to recognize (and assign names) to turtles we saw on each of our five days there. Range in size from 8" to nearly 3'. LOTS of 'em!
Looking forward to reopening of the Science Center.

Facility still closed because of Hurricane Harvey

This place was really devastated by Hurricane Harvey and is a long way from being restored. But eventually it (and the entire community of Port A) will be up and running again, even better than before.

Still closed as of June 28th

We wanted to visit here, but it is still closed from storm damage. In fact, we saw numerous buildings in Port A that were closed, some wrecked and some being renovated.

The Marine Science Institute has Hurricane damage

Unfortunately the Institute took the full brunt of the storm. They are repairing the dorms and trying to get the facility open again. The research building on the pier is completely gone as is the boardwalk to the institute.

The kids really enjoyed it here

We had come the day before, but the main exhibit was closed. So today my son wanted to go back. Lots of interactive things for the kids to do. We did a little walking outside, but it was rather hot, so we didn't stay long. The staff was super nice. A wonderful group of people work there!
