Clean campsites, very friendly camp managers- patrick, ilene and their dog rusty greeted us again, we walked the trails everyday and they were awesome. Met some really nice people the 5 days we stayed.the hospitality of the camp managers were really appteciated. I think we found our favorite place! We will definately be back!

We were only driving trough the national forest to mission tejas state park and the views are very natural. If you plan your visit well you might have a great time.

This is a pretty nice campground for getting away from it all and relaxing. Most of the sites are pretty level and it was pretty quiet during our stay (Dec 2018). Not sure what it might be like during the summer camping season. Although the sites are set up as electric only, there's plenty of access to water, and depending on the site, your hose may reach the water spigot. If you need to run to town, Lufkin isn't too far away and has plenty of services.

We enjoyed both of our days hiking the Four C Trail--although we only saw half of it. The south end is appropriate for all skill levels and we thought best for scenery. The bonus on this end is the lake with the roped off swim area, plus a sand beach and bath houses. The north end is more rigorous due to the bluffs, but we found the river views somewhat anti-climatic. Abundant shade for those looking for cooler temps--but high humidity when we visited.

The main place to stop is Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area (so see reviews for that place) but the whole Forest is a beautiful area. Even if you don't have time to stop it's neat to watch the majestic pines as you drive by.

Me and a friend came here for a day hike in January 2017.
The trails were very easy and well-marked. Not hard at all, and lots of cute benches and bridges along the way.
We brought some lunch with us and had a nice time by the lake.
It was very low traffic and a nice hike so me and my friend could catch up.
Some of the forest (and trails) were closed due to a marijuana crop being found. Also, the visitor center was closed for some reason.

I tried to do one of the hikes with two young boys (8 and 3), but quickly decided that:
a. I should have pants on
b. There's a lot of stuff hitting my small child in the face.
C. I have to carry a stick in front of my face to stop ninja chopping spiderwebs.
So, we went to the Ratcliff Lake area and had a great time. We had the place to ourselves. It was beautiful, had shallow swim area perfect for both boys, and we were free from drama. I didn't have cash for the entrance fee, but sent a check above and beyond to the US Park Service because no one hassled us about it. And, really, this day in age, if you expect people to have cash (exact change, at that) at a self serve pay station, then I guess it would either be a great waste of time or a great fine money maker to patrolle it. I'm happy they opted for the latter.

Quiet area to bring a few friends or family members for a weekend camping. Very cost efficient and away from the city. The small towns of Ratcliff and Lufkin are not too far away in case small re-supply trips are needed. This is a great spot to showcase the green vibrant side of Texas that most people do not immediately associate with the state. Hiking trails are ok as long as you are not looking for an extreme challenge. Nights are especially fun, when the only noises you hear are the breeze and the frogs rather than cars on the road. Pack some lanters, grab a campsite by the water and enjoy

Looked like Canada. Lots of pines and shade. There was day camping across the water with several families, who went home after supper. Lots of birds and squirrels. No mosquitoes. Good tenting area. Free hot showers and bathrooms. Very reasonably priced. Very quiet. Campsites were well spread out.

A different view of Texas. Most people think of the dry, dusty West Texas desert when they think of Texas. Expand your impression of this great state and head to the Davy Crockett National Forest. Springtime is the best time, lush green trees and gorgeous Texas wildflowers everywhere. Stop at any of the stations in the park, and the staff will give you the best places to go, based on what you like. There are some great hikes. Start at Ratcliff Lake, and there are three hikes. There is a short one, one that is about an hour, and if you are really adventurous (and fit, and don't mind carrying your camping gear and camping on the way) a really big hike "The Four C Hiking Trail". Opted for the medium hike, but met travelers starting and finishing the big hike (they all loop together in the beginning), and they said it was fantastic.
If you go up just past the Northwest part of the camp you will find a great free camping spot at Neches Bluff. There is a drop toilet there, and campsites are spread out and private. Check with the park before lighting a campfire (you usually are allowed, but definitely check first for fire danger). Spend a couple of nights listening to the wind in the pine trees and the gentle crackle of a fire. Heaven. [don't forget the mosquito spray]

Hello,
Last year I went camping to this place and I loved it. It was quite, lots of shade, pretty, it was big I just loved the National Forest. However what I did not like is that I could not go swimming the water was murky and it did not look like good to swim. I would love to camp here again but I like to go swimming and hiking. Where can I camp where I could go swimming, hiking and where its pretty, the national forest is big, peaceful and lots of shade?

They have the standard lake style grills and fire pits with a half grill. I wouldn't call them covered. The free standing grill is great for charcoal and cooking on the pit is ok if you don't mind a little bit of ashes.
I hope this helps.
