Nice boardwalk around the shallow lake and marsh - good for a stroll
A well maintained State Park, part of the World Birding Center in the RGV. Not overwhelming, but makes for a nice stroll through a marsh. There is a very nice shaded area by the visitor center where you can look over the shallow lake to see some birds.

Beautiful place!
We live right next door to this park. We go there often just to walk for exercise because it's such a beautiful place to go. We took my Mom on a tram tour last year and it was very informative. The staff is very friendly and accomodating.

A great place to watch for birds

My wife and I came to South Texas to see the birds at this state park did not let us down. There is a wide selection of birds and other animals to be seen at all times of the year. Many tropical birds make it this far up north from Mexico and lots of northern birds come this far south for the winter. The Rangers are very helpful and the park volunteers are also enthusiastic and are willing to help you find some of the particularly tricky birds to locate

This state park is part of the World Birding Center. Admission is $5/adult, children 12 and under are free; buy your ticket at the office window. Due to Covid, the visitor center and gift shop was not open. There were no roving rangers. But you can get a map that shows the trails and there is a board that lets you know of interesting bird sightings. There are several ponds where the birds were plentiful: ibis, egrets, ducks, coots, etc. There is a boardwalk that takes you between several wetlands areas otherwise the trails are crushed stone. We saw several people with walkers that had no trouble on the trails and there are plenty of benches. The area where we saw an Altamira Oriole, Kiskadee and Cardinals was near a neglected campground. Perhaps it was used more pre-Covid. We were lucky enough to see Vermilion Flycatchers. Definitely a great place to watch birds if you take your time. Don’t forget your binoculars, hat and water.

Birdwatchers paradise
Just so many sites for birdwatching here. The deck is the best. It overlooks a large pond with many types of birds. Usually a volunteer around to help.

A walk around the lakes is also suggested. It's wide open so would be quite hot once spring lands. Saw least terns in far lake - a good sighting at any time. Stilt sandpiper was wading in middle lake with a dowitcher.

Tropical area was excellent for nonwater birds. Saw Couch's kingbird there - tropical kingbird as well.

Tours are offered for both areas. Guides were knowledgeable and nice people.

Great habitat and very nice staff.
Firstly, this site wouldn't allow me to rate this site more than terrible. I tried several times. Anyway, there's a very nice visitor center there. The habitat had a good mix of wetlands and forest. The trailer park in there is an eyesore and really degrades the aesthetic qualities of the area. As a wildlife photographer from Oregon, I came their mostly to photograph new species - green jays, chachalacas, orioles, etc. The site had several feeding stations and a state-of-art photo blind. But, they obviously had no input from an actual photographer when setting them up. There was few or no natural perches near the feeders for good shots. It was take a shot of an ugly old feeder or nothing. Just a little input from a photographer would really help - as thes sites weresome of the most visited by birders. egg

Terrific location for birding
This is a terrific birding spot with a variety of habitat. A series of trails and lookout locations made this an easy location to navigate. Every time we've been there, always other friendly birders willing to help out with identification.
